Everyone must be willing to accept each other as well as their opinions Everyone must be willing to accept other people or their opinions that are different from theirs. After viewing the texts “Texas vs Johnson”by William Brennan “American Flag Stands For Tolerance” by Ronald J.Allen and also viewed a trailer called “My So Called Enemy”. They revealed how different people should be accepted. People should be accepted for who they are and for what they believed. To begin with in the text “American Flag Stands For Tolerance”, he believes everyone should be able to do as he or she believes. In the text throughout lines 28-30 in the text stated “ Each individuals is to have the freedom to develop by his or her own lights, and not by the command
There are three main parts of his argument. The first part of his argument delves into the nature of man and government. This part investigates the role of natural vs. implied rights and it’s role in the creation of a government. The second part of his argument deals with the “concurrent” vs. “numerical” majority, which deals with the ideals of a majority against the ideals of a minority and a numerical faction. The third part of his argument deals with liberty, rights, power and security. I believe this part is most crucial because not everyone is implied to be free, but rather people need to deserve their freedom. This can’t be true, because people on American history because of their race and gender were not allowed to live by some of theories granted in the Disquisition of Government.
What he was claiming was that African Americans slaves were born in the United States so they should be entitled to same American values given to the white Americans. He also goes ahead to bash the government for the attitudes towards his people and goes on to explain how he feels they are be exploited. His impact that he intended to have from this speech had been to bring freedom to African American’s by letting proper democratic ideals decide who is entitled to what rights. During the time of the speech he said black American’s should be ashamed to celebrate this holiday due to the misdeeds and unfair enforcement of these laws. His main take away from this was that the slavery going on in America was harmful and illegal because they violated the founding father principle rights. Throughout him speaking he goes on to undercut many powerful institutions in America that are simply letting slavery go on and not doing anything about it (Church). He is a very faithful man and believes looking back at his sentiments will ring home and show that he was inevitably correct in due time. In conclusion this ties to the ideas that African Americans should not have to celebrate this holiday until they feel like they are being equally treated under the same law are the white
In John McCain’s essay “Veterans Day: Never forget their duty” he talks about his friend ,Mike, who was in the same prison camp as he was in and showed the pride that he and his fellow prisoners had for their flag. The American Flag is the most iconic symbol of America and to express pride for The American Flag is to show pride in America itself. On page 7 paragraph 8 “Every afternoon, before we had a bowl of soup, we would hang MIke’s shirt on the wall of our cell and say the Pledge of Allegiance. I know that saying the Pledge of Allegiance may not seem the most important or meaningful part of our day now, but I can assure you that for those men in that stark prison cell, it was, indeed, the most important and meaningful event of our day”. John McCain shares with us that the most important part of their day was to say the Pledge of Allegiance.
Stripes and stars forever, right? Well, what exactly does that mean? The American Flag can be seen almost anywhere. From the high-school, to the ball park, and even in our homes, the American flag stands as a symbol of all that is good and true in America. When one thinks of the flag, they usually think of the blood that was shed for this country. It was shed so that we could have liberties, such as, freedom of speech and expression, which fall under the first amendment rights of the Constitution. However, when you think of a burning flag, what comes to mind? One might say it shows disrespect and hatred to a country that has given so much. In the case of Texas v. Johnson, Gregory Lee Johnson was accused of desecrating a sacred object, but, his actions were protected by the First Amendment. Although his actions may have been offensive, he did not utter fighting words. By burning the flag, Johnson did not infringe upon another's natural human rights. He was simply expressing his outrage towards the government, which is within the jurisdiction of the First Amendment.
In being so diverse, the lives and beliefs of many different cultures here in America are accepted. One major example, is religion. Jews and Arabs, who are enemies in there Jammal 2 countries, live in the United States in harmony. Another example are the Muslims and Hindu’s, who hate and kill each other in their countries, and yet can live in America side by side in peace because of Thomas J...
The dissenting opinion to the previous idea is that the government's legitimate interest in preserving the symbolic value of the flag is, however, essentially the same that may have motivated a particular act of flag burning. The flag uniquely symbolizes the ideas of liberty, equality, and tolerance -- ideas that Americans have passionately defended and debated throughout our history. The flag embodies the spirit of our national commitment to those ideals. To the world, the flag is our promise that we will continue to strive for these ideals. To us, the flag is a reminder both that the struggle for li...
The United States Flag is the third oldest of the National Standards of the world; older than the Union Jack of Britain or the Tricolor of France.
“We, as human beings, must be willing to accept people who are different from ourselves (Barbara Jordan pg 1).” In this unit, acceptance plays a huge role in several different ways in the documents we read. In seminal documents like “Texas V. Johnson Majority Opinion”, the court accepts the fact that Gregory Lee Johnson should not be sentenced for desecrating the flag, even though they believe it is wrong. “The Lottery” and “What, of This Goldfish, Would You Wish?” have a different way of showing acceptance through the characters of their stories. These three passages explore the diverse differences between people and show that we sometimes just have to accept things even though we may not like them.
In mentioning the Emancipation Proclamation he shows that our ancestors signed a contract, in which all human beings are created equal, and therefore should be treated in the same way as others. He also visualizes his ideas with visual examples, which everybody can understand. “America has given the black population a bad check, which has come back marked insufficient funds”( I Have a Dream) In one paragraph of his speech he mentions that the “black population has come to our nation’s capital to cash a check. but we refuse to believe, that the bank of justice is bankrupt and that there are insufficient funds in the great vaults of opportunity of this nation” (316).
In the quote Barbara Jordan states, “We, as human beings , must be willing to accept people are different from ourselves” is the quote that I will be connecting this to two different story to show how many people discriminate other because they have a different outlook on this topic . In the story Texas v. Johnson Majority Opinion “We decline, therefore, to create for the flag an exception to the joust of principles protected by the first amendment”. Which in my opinion is showing that there are abusing the first amendment because if people have the freedom of speech then why are they ignored just for saying what they believe in if you have freedom of speech. And in the story American Flag Stands for Tolerance Ronald J. Allen states, “The
He said “The whites have always been an unjust, jealous, unmerciful, avaricious and blood-thirsty set of beings, always seeking after power and authority.” (David Walker’s Appeal, p. 3) He also said “Americans say, that we are ungrateful-but I ask them for heaven’s sake, what should we be grateful to them for – for murdering our fathers and mothers? – Or do they wish us to return thanks to them for chaining and handcuffing us, branding us, cramming fire down our throats, or for keeping us in slavery, and beating us nearly or quite to death to make us work in ignorance and miseries, to support them and their families. They certainly think that we are a gang of fools.” (David Walker’s Appeal, p. 3,4) The slaves did not want to leave the country. This was their home now too. “Let no man of us budge one step, and let slave-holders come to beat us from our country. America is more our country, than it is the whites-we have enriched it with our blood and tears”. (David Walker’s Appeal, p. 4) The Anti-Slavery Convention was held in Philadelphia in 1833. The Declaration of Sentiments was written for emancipation for the nearly two million slaves. “Truth, Justice, Reason, Humanity, must and will gloriously triumph.” (Declaration of Sentiments of the American Anti-Slavery Convention, p. 4) The Declaration wanted equal rights for the slaves and freedom to grow intellectually, socially, and
“With this faith we will be able to hew out of the mountain of despair a stone of hope. With this faith we will be able to transform the jangling discords of our nation into a beautiful brotherhood. With this faith we will be able to work together, to pray together, to struggle together, to go to jail together, to stand up for freedom together, knowing that we will be free one day.”-Martin Luther King. Jr. People have been separated and treated differently for the color on the outside, but not their real culture on the birth certificate if they weren't white. But that didn't stop anyone or anybody to fight for their civil rights. People saw the political figures as is, Martin Luther King, Rosa Parks, and Malcolm X, but they don't see the

Living in a diverse world should be something a person should be proud of. Getting to know a person’s culture and their beliefs should be a wonderful ability. Respecting one another is important, even though a lot of people still disregard that, which should discontinue. We should all start to learn how to make this world a better place,
