Google defines community service as “Voluntary work intended to help people in a particular area”. Building on that, I would add that when done with the right heart, it is also an act if selflessness: putting others and their time above your own schedule. Ever since the founding of our country, service to society has always been important. Not only do we need it to run properly as a nation, but it is also so enriching to volunteer and advocate for a cause. In essence, community service is the fabric of the United States of America. America has always been a nation that grows and thrives off of people in a population getting the job done as a team. Imagine life without anybody giving of themselves and their time; no volunteer fire fighters, no activists clocking countless hours of raising money to educate minors in poverty, and nobody to “adopt a highway” and pick up trash along busy roads. Thankfully, so many people are generous with their time and efforts, and are willing to work, unpaid, for causes that mean something to them! I would even go so far as to argue that becoming active duty in the military is a form of community service. Although American soldiers are paid, they are selflessly putting their life on the line to protect everyone else’s. I’d say that is the one of the highest forms of service to community. America also needs community service in the government that our founding fathers established. Jury duty is an opportunity for citizens to take part in upholding justice by discerning right from wrong. Harsh weather is another factor that calls for people to work together and accomplish something important. When a major hurricane or tornado hits a town, everyone in the area must come together to repair homes and replenish lost items. Even people from across the country send supplies to support the families who lost all their possessions. As Americans, we also need our forerunners to lead by example when it comes to community service. A few years ago, my dad came home from work inspired to better the environment at work by picking up stray trash. Why? Because earlier in the day, he had seen his Wing commander, who, with a very busy schedule and a whole base to run, took the time to go throw away a piece of trash lying in the Commissary parking lot.
