Introduction:
Brazil is transitioning from a country that mainly has an underweight population to more of the population becoming obese. This problem is commonly known as the double burden of malnutrition. Historically in Brazil your level of income has determined your obesity. That is no longer the case as more and more low-income people become obese. In a survey conducted in 1975 there were 2 cases of underweight to 1 case of overweight versus in 1997 there was greater than 2 obese women to 1 underweight woman. With this double burden of malnutrition comes a host of other problems.
Among teenagers the obesity rate is also increasing. Teenagers tend to snack on calorie dense snacks, without regard to nutritional content. In a survey conducted in Brazil among 63 adolescents, a large portion listed pastries as their favorite snack and everyone listed a soft drink as their favorite beverage. ii In that same survey 78% indicated that their mother was very important or important in exerting a degree of influence over their eating habits, while family members (65%) and fathers (64%) also had influence over their snacking habits. ii It was also shown that the majority of nutritional information (91%) that adolescents receive comes from their family. ii
The study above highlights the importance of parental involvement when conducting interventions targeted at adolescents. In order to affect adolescents we also need to affect the parents. An intervention without parent or community involvement is much less likely to succeed, than an intervention that incorporates multiple family members (in particular the mother) and the community. ...Because of this a lot of interventions stress the importance of home cooking. A study was conducted to determine if there was an impact from cooking and home food preparations interventions. Through this study it was determined that interventions with home food preparation and cooking may have positive impacts. There were some weaknesses in the study design, assessment and study population and these weaknesses make this study a little unreliable but I think it provides some evidence of the benefits of this type of intervention.
Based off of other interventions I think that the CP was on the right track. They incorporated the community, focused on a community that really needed the attention, and partnered with other organizations to provide more access. The CP main problem is that it doesn’t address poverty and the sustainability of the program is not clear.
Nutritionism and Today’s Diet Nutritionism is the ideology that the nutritional value of a food is the sum of all its individual nutrients, vitamins, and other components. In the book, “In Defense of Food” by Michael Pollan, he critiques scientists and government recommendations about their nutritional advice. Pollan presents a strong case pointing out the many flaws and problems that have risen over the years of following scientific studies and government related warnings on the proper amount of nutrients needed for a healthy diet. Nutritionism is an ideology that believes that the nutrients in foods are the key to understanding them. Nutritionism believers are so focused on the nutrients that food contains that they forget about all other aspects of food. Midterm Paper Developmental Efforts Related to Adolescent Obesity Qualitative Research “More than one third of our children and adolescents in our country are now overweight or obese” (Kids and Obesity). This epidemic is also skyrocketing the occurrence of disorders and other health issues such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, asthma, bone and joint problems, weight problems and obesity. But obesity can also affect adolescents on a deeper level, especially those of lower socioeconomic classes. Depression and low self esteem is also directly related to obesity and has high tendencies to lead to substance abuse in males and eating disorders in females (weight problems and obesity).

The World Health Organization (WHO) defines malnutrition as “the cellular imbalance between the supply of nutrients and energy and the body’s demand for them to ensure growth, maintenance, and specific functions”. This imbalance includes both inadequate and excessive energy intake; the former leading to malnutrition in the form of wasting, stunting and underweight, and the latter resulting in overweight and obesity.
I think a mentally healthy community would be filled with an abundance of resources and opportunities for everyone in need of assistance. Having accessibility to therapists, crisis lines, social services, physical therapy, correctional facilities, affordable health care, affordable housing, and mental hospitals would be a good step towards a mentally healthy community.
Malnutrition impacts the development of a fetus into a young child because it has a harmful effect on their cognitive development as the child becomes older. Malnutrition can be defined as lacking proper nutritional value and not eating enough food which is needed for a body to function properly. I believe malnutrition of a fetus, eventually born into a child, will indefinitely make a negative impact on a child’s life mainly due to not receiving the right nutrients and supplements needed to develop an optimally functioning brain and build a healthy structured body.
To survive in life we need to consume food whether it is for nutritional value or for the pure enjoyment of its savory taste. Individuals, not the government, have the right to choose what and when to eat; but good nutrition is important to maintain health and live a long and happy life. People need to make choices everyday about what they put into their bodies. Without proper nutrition, our bodies may not be able to function correctly. Most adults know what is good and bad for the body. We all know that diets rich in fruits and vegetables fuel the body in a healthy way and that protein gives us energy. Most people today recognize that fast food meals are generally not very beneficial to one’s health, regardless of their decision to consume them.
