I think a mentally healthy community would be filled with an abundance of resources and opportunities for everyone in need of assistance. Having accessibility to therapists, crisis lines, social services, physical therapy, correctional facilities, affordable health care, affordable housing, and mental hospitals would be a good step towards a mentally healthy community. When I think about mental health, I generally think about Maslow’s hierarchy of needs; feeling safe, feeling loved, being productive/sense of accomplishment, having physiological wellness, and good self. Mental health is a state emotional wellness, which allows you to effectively cope with life stresses and is partly derived from having major needs fulfilled. Some of the major problems that I have noticed in my community and that were listed by Levine, D. D. Perkins and D. V. Perkins (2005) are substance abuse, suicide, domestic violence and assault, arrest, poverty, unemployment, lack of health care, low income, lack of affordable housing, debt, gender inequality, not having access to trained professionals, child abuse and neglect, divorce, teen pregnancy, and rise of sexually transmitted disease. People have also been impacted by current events such as the devastating fires occurring in northern California, the mass shootings and also, (but unrelated to the mass destruction), the presidential election. These are some of the factors have created emotional constraints and they are some of the many stresses in a society that can cause chronic disorders and negatively impact personal relationships. However, there can be several acts in this community that I believe can be done to aid and prevent mental
Mental health can described as being the psychological state of someone who is functioning at a satisfactory level of emotional and behavioural adjustment; this refers to our mental and emotional well-being. Once hearing that someone is mentally unhealthy, or has a mental illness, usually their first reaction is one of concern, fear, or confusion.
Mental health is being aware, accepting yourself, and striking a balance in all aspects of your life like social, spiritual, physical, economical, and mental (Association, 2001). Mental health can be described as our positive interactions with the context and events in our life, and having the ability to cope with life’s stressors. Mental health problems can begin at anytime during your life (CAMH, 2010). In fact anything can make it difficult for an individual’s ability to interact effectively, and may lead into a mental health problem (Association, 2001).

Healthy People 2020 is a program for the promotion of health and the prevention of diseases, launched by the Department of Health and Human Services in December 2010. According to healthypeople.gov, this program has four overarching goals which are first to achieve healthy, longer lives free of preventable diseases, injuries, and premature deaths; to achieve health fairness, eliminate differences, and improve all groups’ health; also to produce social and physical environments that encourage good health; and last but not least to promote life’s quality, healthy development, and healthy behaviors through all life stages. This program has a vision of a community where people live long, healthy lives. Healthy People 2020 offers a comprehensive set of 10 years of nationwide goals and objectives that is meant to improve the health of the American population. Healthy People 2020 covers 42 topic areas with approximately 600 objectives, which include 1,200 measures. A smaller set of Healthy People 2020 objectives, has been designated to communicate high-priority health issues and actions that can be taken to address them, this objectives are called Leading Health Indicators. The program goes above and beyond these health indicators in order to provide the best care for the people of this country. These indictors cover from the access of health service, nutrition, physical activity, and obesity to substance abuse, environmental quality, injury and violence.
Poverty is one of the most disadvantaging features to mental illness. Poverty results from variety of inequalities. For instance, unemployment, lack of access to education and low income contribute to poverty (The human face). Income is a person’s main source for support of basic living needs. Consuming nutritional food and clean water, living in a safe housing, affording weather appropriate clothing and personal hygiene are all tied to a person’s level of income. Therefore, one could argue these factors could be connected with a person’s mental health issues. For example, living in an expensive city like Vancouver, individuals suffer from low minimum wage and the high cost of living which may lead to more stress in their

Mental health is defined as "A state of complete physical, mental and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease" (World health organization [WHO], 2012, p.3). Mental illness refers to health conditions or disorders which are characterized by alterations in thinking, mood, and behaviors, and may affect a person’s ability to fully function on a daily basic (Healthy people 2020).
Mental health is just as important as physical health in a person’s life. Mental health is critical to a person’s well-being, their ability to live a productive life and to keep a healthy family and interpersonal relationships. Mental health does not just affect the mind it also affects people’s physical health. Some physical health diseases can cause a mental health disorder and vice versa. Mental health disorders are associated with the occurrence, development, and outcome of some of the today’s most chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. When people go untreated from a mental health disorder are at a higher risk for many unhealthy behaviors such as alcohol and drug use, violent behavior, and suicide.
One of the first major steps that began the development of community health centers was the Community Mental Health Act of 1963, signed by President John F. Kennedy (Moran, 2013). Under this law, mental health needs shifted from institutions to community-based programs that helps prevents, identifies and treats mental illnesses (Moran, 2013). Many people realized how institutions were not responding to the higher rates of patients appropriately and questioned its overall effectiveness and lack of holistic practices (Moran, 2013). Since the Community Mental Health Act of 1963, the United States worked on deinstitutionalization so communities can get the health care they needed
There are numerous public health problems that can be addressed in my Southside of Chicago community. Among the several public health problems facing my Southside of Chicago community there are two that are more urgent. Health education or one might say lack thereof is a problem that needs to be addressed. My community is plagued with many of the residents suffering from high blood pressure, diabetes, and the killer virus known as HIV. In most cases these conditions can be prevented with healthier lifestyles and access to nutritious organic foods. In addition, environmental health is another urgent problem my community is facing. Access to clean, safe water and air is supposed to be a fundamental human right aimed at a healthy environment. Yet, my community consists a waste contaminated beach, numerous deteriorated building that are still occupied, and a countless number of restaurant and stores supplying our residents with services that are endangering their health.
Our society today does not value our mental health like it should. If society would only pay as much attention to mental health, they would be better off in the long run. Think about an athlete playing a sport, they certainly understand how important physical health is. When a baseball player injures his knee, he is out and waits until it heals. But like many people, mental health is overlooked. Most teenagers do not realize that the many things like stress or eating disorders are coming from a poor mental state. They think that if they just ignore it they will snap out of it, this is not true and many times this kind of thinking will only make it worse (Change Your Mind). Mental health is not seen as important as physical health due to misconceptions and stigma behind mental health patients. By increasing the importance of personal mental health, people can reduce issues associated with mental health problems and raise awareness for people who suffer from mental health issues.
Today, the numbers of people with mental health issues are considerably high. The problem increases the national and global social and economic burdens as governments try to find means of empowering the people with the issue and solve the problem. Today, one in five adults in the United States has a mental health problem (“Mental Health Facts,” 2016). “Mental Health Facts” (2016) also states that the adults that received mental health services are about 60%. Only 50% of the youth with mental health issues received mental health services in the previous year. Further, mental health issues are also related to drug use and addiction. Of all the mental illnesses and disorders, depression affects the most people and has the biggest burden globally. Due to the increasing burden and the gap in service utilization, the mental health policy seeks to address several factors. Some of the key issues to address include early diagnosis of mental disorders, provision of appropriate and adequate intervention a particular problem, education and counseling for the family members, and research to help reduce the numbers and reverse the trend. Another key area of focus is the use of mass media to create awareness about mental health issues and help clear the
