I would like to personally thank you and your foundation for the opportunity to be considered for the Jacinta McKoy Community Based Learning and Action Scholarship. Blessed by every community I find myself in, I and my family have been cared for and benefited from all types of community service. From government and church programs, to kind neighbors and strangers, I’ve seen and felt the positive effects of community service. Thus, I am committed to bettering society through community-based service. If I expect my community to continue working to support families and pursue positive change, I need to do my part to grow and maintain compassion and tolerance. In order to do this, I am always seeking to build bridges and improve communication …show more content…
I work summers with the National Park Service as maintenance; every aspect of my job is an effort to preserve the park for future generations of visitors and prevent harm to the landscape and animals by managing human use impacts. As an in-home caregiver in Thurston County, my clients are typically vulnerable adults who need additional help around the house or for transportation. I and other caregivers play a key role in our clients’ social and legal safety …show more content…
The setting and type of work isn’t a concern so long as it is focused on natural resource management, indigenous rights, environmental restoration, and community outreach--to any extent. Either way, my knowledge gained through my studies at The Evergreen State College will serve more than myself. I want to be constantly sharing my knowledge and environmental experience, as well as building it with the help of my community. My fellow community members are the most warranted for investment of my time, knowledge, and ability. Community-based involvement generates surging dynamic impacts that inspire further action--the ultimate spark for social change. While actively participating in full-time school, I have also been able to maintain a part-time job and involvement in my community. I am a dedicated student and loving community member. I believe I am a worthy applicant for your scholarship. Enclosed are the documents required for your scholarship application. Once more, thank you for providing this exceptional opportunity for students in need of financial

Over the years I have been very involved in my community and school. Being a part of something helps to define who you are as a person and the principles and values you hold as important. A personal experience that helps to show my talents and skills can be illustrated by my trip to Italy last April with the MHS Language Department.
People’s lives are changed every day by their actions and experiences. This past summer, I participated in a community service project, an experience that opened my eyes in many ways. I was a volunteer at the County Memorial Hospital. In my time as a volunteer at the hospital, I was able to meet patients and staff members from all over the world and learn about their life experiences. Listening to all of their stories has made me truly appreciate everything which I have.
To Mr. David Ibarra (Ibarra Foundation) My name is Silvia Araoz, I am from Peru. I am very grateful because I am one of the winners of the Ibarra Foundation Scholarship. This scholarship will give me the opportunity to finish my Paralegal Program at Salt Lake Community College. Now, I will be able to face this competitive life and develop my professional legal career helping immigrant people who is still struggling to find a bright path for them and their families. I need this scholarship to achieve my goals and most importantly to make my family proud. My family did not get this chance that you are giving me so I am not just doing this for me, I am also doing this for them. I already have all the support from all of my family and all of my friends, but that alone is not enough to conquer my dreams, and to prove all the people that have doubted me that they were wrong. I hope that this organization can help me reach my goals, and to most importantly make them become a reality. I want to look back onto my life and know that this scholarship, and college helped me to be the man I will be. I hope you accept me into your college and most importantly giving me this
Now the President of Friends 4 Hope, I am proud and glad that I have dedicated my time to making friendships and volunteering with the Hope students. Working with Hope School has allowed me to develop into an excellent communicator and leader. For the first time I loved what I volunteered for. I did not care about the hours, I just wanted to change other’s lives, and with my 4 years in Friends 4 Hope, I believe I did just that. From this experience, I can apply it to other endeavors I may
Volunteerism, civic engagement and advocacy are the driving forces for creating change and making a positive impact in your community and society at large. While gaining internship and job experience can lead to community impact and social change, it’s important for us to remember that before we start advocating for change and informing others about issues we care about, we need to fully understand the complexity and depth of the social, environmental, or economic issue we are passionate about.
While a national and global environmental justice movement exist, many of the battles for environmental justice take place at the local level, and a central tool of these battles is street science. At its core, street science necessarily values the local knowledge that people in a community gain through experience and share through storytelling. Street science also depends on collaborations between locals and professionals, including scientists, lawyers, doctors, and environmental health experts (Corburn 2005). This relationship between locals and professionals can manifest in different ways, but often involves professionals training locals to collect samples and data from their own neighborhood. The coupling of local knowledge with professional knowledge, precipitates what Corburn (2005: 41) calls the co-production of of expertise.

...e any conflict is to become calm an effective communicator. Reinforcing your listening skills are a must when looking to further your communication skills. Let’s face it you want to listen well before setting a plan of action. Never jump into any conversation unprepared, not only can it cause conflict but you can lose credibility if the meaning of what you are trying to say is lost. Verbal communication is always best, talking to another individual face to face is a good idea this way you can judge their reactions by their body language and you can express the correct meaning. But, remember that verbal is not the only form of communication. Your nonverbal communication can say a lot to the receiver (ie. body language). Use supportive messages rather than defensive ones can be more productive. Any conflict can be resolved through correct and effective communication.
