The Denham Town community is predominantly a residential neighborhood in West-central Kingston, Jamaica. It unfortunately earned a reputation as one of Kingston’s more violent inner city communities. Despite having to contend with crime and violence over the years, other social issues like: drug/alcohol abuse, gang violence, education gap and unemployment have significantly affected the youths.
The scourge of crime and violence reportedly scarred the inner city youths, hence the NCB Foundation sought to avert some of those challenges. It has since helped by contributing to the improvement of the lives of those most vulnerable and at-risk youths.
Therefore, the intention of this study is to assess the contributions of the NCB Foundation on youth in the community of Denham Town.
Definition/Conceptualization of Technical Terms:
In order to attain a more in depth understanding of the issues at hand, the NCB Foundation must be conceptualized.
The mission of the Foundation, according to its official website, the organisation respects and embraces charitable causes that are relevant to the betterment of Jamaica and ultimately leads to a sense of corporate social responsibility through strategic partnerships focused on the development of the nation’s people.
In saying this, the NCB Foundation assists with the provision of an improved quality education, and through social partnerships with stakeholders; it helps with the alleviation of crime among our nation’s youth.
Youth is defined by Macmillan dictionary as that time period in an individual’s life when they are young.

According to a newspaper article published in The Gleaner (Wednesday June 8, 2011)by Kaymian Weekley, the NCB Foundation scholarship programme was established because the Foundation saw a need to help students who excel academically, but may not have any or all the resources to pursue their interests.
Programs Officer, Bridgette Rhoden stated that, the foundation believes in building Jamaica and are committed to assisting young people in getting an education. She further emphasized that the foundation is excited to contribute to youth development because youth face obstacles in achieving their careers, and also for others to recognize that these young people will eventually assist in nation building.
Why are some neighborhoods more prone to experience violent episodes than others? What is the extent and in what sociologically measurable ways do communities contribute to the causation and prevention of crime in their neighborhoods? Are neighborhood-level predictors adequate to explain differences in violent crime rates in the respective communities? These are some of the questions addressed by this statistically intense paper published in Science 1997, by Sampson, Raudenbush and Earls.
Gang violence is one of the most damaging acts that Chicago faces. Gang violence has been rising due to gangs growing in numbers. Gangs have been responsible for a lot of homicides, beatings, and robberies. Due to all these heinous acts, communities and mainly kids have been affected. It affects the mind of youths by means of influence, distraction, and curiosity of how it feels to be part of a gang. Gang violence stops families from moving into specific locations and they also make several businesses relocate to other better locations.
Measures of prevention or intervention that can be taken include creating early prevention programs, collaboration between the school, police, and parents, and policy measures. Programs that focus on increasing positive interactions with peers and encourage self esteem can help deter a child from a lifestyle susceptible to gang recruiting later in life (Simon, Ritter, and Mahendra, 2013). Such programs are vital in the school environment, where a youth spends most of his/her day. Schools must take note of the common signs of a youth with a high risk of becoming a gang member, for instance, poor grades and performance, and social rejection in the form of being bullied or being the bully. Moreover, schools should offer programs that raise awareness
When studying human development, it is helpful to understand the main developmental domains (i.e physical, cognitive, emotional and moral) and the ways in which people develop within each domain at certain age stages. Use of psychological theories is also helpful to understand the reasons for this development and the ways in which it manifests at different age stages. The objective of this essay is to analyse the influences on development from conception to late adolescence. It will describe theories of lifespan development with information regarding my own development used to support these theories. It will be concluded that theories of lifespan development can be used to explain life experiences in the different developmental domains at different

The mission of StandUp for Kids is “to empower teenagers toward lifelong personal growth through on the streets outreach programs.” This mission statement is clear and concise. It guides the actions of StandUp for Kids, spells out their overall goal and provides a path. StandUp for Kids strives to gain the trust of homeless youth in order to achieve its mission statement (StandUp For, 2014). This trust is sought out through programs such as street outreach where volunteers search for homeless youth who are in need of help. The homeless youth are then introduced to outreach centers where they are provided with food, basic supplies, counseling, educational assistance, independent living skills training and referral services for available programs throughout the community (StandUp For, 2014).
... crime and should adopt policies that compliment better socialization of youths. The seriousness of youth crime trends must be addressed with punishments that pay retribution to society. It is equally important that youths are not excluded from society by a legal system that does not recognize their special needs. Rehabilitation measures must address the socialization problems that children are facing with their families, schools, and media pressures. Children will be given alternatives to their delinquent behaviours that may not have been obvious or initially appealing. These changes will result in the prevention and decline of youth gang related crime. Youth gangs are not inevitable. Some social reorganization backed by government policies will eliminate the youth perception that youth gangs are socially acceptable. The Youth Criminal Justice Act (2002) adopts socially focused policies that will better address the social disorientation of youth that lead them into youth gangs. Its implementation is a positive step towards effectively dealing with the changed social forces affecting Canadian youths. Better socialization of youths is paramount to eliminating youth gangs in Canada.
Delinquency and gang violence has disturbed many communities in Urban African American areas. Engaging youth in community programs may take away from the violence, focusing on the missing factor within delinquents. Youth delinquents are molded into violent criminals before they have a chance to build themselves, the known reason is there communities have a part in there behavior.

The “Young People in Northbridge Policy” is applied in the Northbridge district. From the Office of Crime Prevention’s 2003 report, this area “is defined as that area bounded by Roe Street to the south; Beaufort Street to the east; Newcastle Street to the north; the Mitchell Freeway to the west; and, William Street extending to Brisbane Street.”
Many studies have shown that adolescents residing in low income or high crime neighborhoods are more likely to get involved with deviant behavior or committing criminal acts. (Deutsch, 2012) There are several neighborhood factors that affect the crime rates of the neighborhood such as overcrowding, low economic status, the neighborhood’s reputation and its residential instability. These may create a disorganized community, leading to distrust and cynicism among residents in the community. As a result, there would be a higher rate of opportunities for crimes and delinquency. (Kurlychek, 2011) Thus high rates of crimes and violence are more likely to occur at these areas.

Crime Prevention Introduction Crime rate is the ratio of crimes in a neighborhood to the amount of people that populate that specific area (Free Dictionary, 2016). Many officers respond to calls they receive, deal with the problem, and then move onto the next call. By reacting in this manner, it does not help the crime rates to decrease because they are not coming up with solutions to prevent crimes (Argosy University, 2016). Crime prevention is a proactive approach to come up with solutions to help reduce victimization, but the goal is to prevent the crimes altogether (Argosy University, 2016).
Raising community awareness to students will teach them the importance of being involved in the community. Students being able to give back to the community will prepare them for their journey to being a positive role model or servant leader.
Community relating status has an effect on achievements, social comfort, and sexual activity. The perception of the community, both in terms of togetherness and safety, is also critical to adolescents. Positive relationships with adults within the community and opportunities for public engagement give adolescents a understanding of importance and help them feel connected to the neighborhood in which they live. Grievously, low income neighborhoods lack decent social and exercise-related resources, such as after-school and youth programs. This infrequency of services has a negative effect on youth growth in the community. Adolescents introduced to violence in the community are related to various behavioral and unconscious outcomes and has been found to be a distraction in school. The steady risk of violence in high-poverty communities prevents adolescents from picturing their life prospects because they are uncertain of even remain alive into
