Colonial America Citizen Participation is one of the democratic features. Citizen Participation is when the citizens get to participate in the government. It is more than a right it’s an opportunity to get to be apart of something going on in your community. An effective citizen participation will most likely build a stronger democracy. Citizen Participation takes many forms like, debating issues, voting, serving in the military, paying taxes, running for office, and many many more. That can be found that in document 2 Voting Qualifications. Another feature is Individual Or Human Rights but it is in the undemocratic feature. Individual Or Human Rights is rights were all people have simple rights because they are all human beings.
On the national civics assessment, “two-thirds of 12th graders scored below ‘proficient’…and only 9 percent could list two ways a democracy benefits from citizen participation” (O’Connor and Romer 4). The information provided clarifies just how little students know about democracy. Without education on the subject, they are unaware as to how their government contribution is beneficial and why it is needed in the first place. The students, because of their lack of understanding, therefore choose to not take part in their government and fail to carry out their duties as a citizen. The authors provide more research that shows “the better people understand our history and system of government, the more likely they are to vote and participate in the civic life” (O’Connor and Romer 8).
If you live in the United States, you probably are aware of the American Revolution. Most educated adults in America can name at least on hero of pre-Revolutionary America such as Samuel Adams, John Hancock, Paul Revere and Thomas Jefferson . But to what extent did these few men, credited with our freedom, actually participate in events that lead up to the revolution? How many countless men remained unnamed and unnoticed despite the work they put into the Revolution? These men have often been overlooked in textbooks, despite the fact most of the freedoms we have now are derived from their brave actions. But why did these men get the wheels of a revolution turning? What was the reason they had for their actions, the very ones that led America and Great Britain to begin a fight not only for freedom, but for life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness?
How were the seeds for self-government sown in the early colonies? Why was this important when England started to enforce rules (such as the Intolerable Acts)? Please give specific examples.

America’s form of representative democracy came as a result of the transgressions Britain committed against their colonies. Several hundred years of salutary neglect served well for those living an ocean away from their motherland. Realizing the prosperity that colonies had obtained through a semi-free market society, the King of England and the parliament began enacting many taxes and acts. Taking away the colonies freedom was unsettling amongst the colonists and eventually led to a revolution. This revolution secured freedom from Britain as well as founded a new nation with the first ever constitution. Although the process to achieve democracy in America was a long, laborious road the freedom, prosperity and equality of opportunity shared by those amongst the states could not be denied.
The establishment of colonies in America took place within distinct circumstances. Some colonies were founded for the purpose of political and religious havens and pursuit of individual freedom and happiness. People came to the New World expecting a place where the rules in the Old World, such as hereditary aristocracies and dominance of church and state, would not apply. Other colonies such as the Carolinas, and Pennsylvania were established by either proprietors, or individuals who had an ideal for a place that could embrace everyone with his/her own will. Before the American Revolution, America was evolving into a more self-governing, independent and democratic society. That spark that was formed by the Great Awakening, led to an immense cry for independence. Although they experienced minor improvements in terms of democracy, development of independence for racial minorities, improvement in voting conditions, betterment in the equal distribution of town offices according to financial status of the people, those minor improvements did not enable the town to become more "democratic". With the presence of unequal distribution of property (land), and lack of religious tolerance, Wethersfield didn't demonstrate major progression from the 1750´s to the 1780´s.
Between 1607 and 1733, Great Britain established thirteen colonies in the New World along the land’s eastern coast. England’s colonies included Virginia, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Maryland, Rhode Island, Connecticut, Delaware, North Carolina, South Carolina, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Georgia. Though the colonies were classified as New England, middle or southern colonies, the colonists developed a unifying culture. With this new American culture, the colonists throughout the colonies began to think differently than their English cousins. Because colonial America displayed characteristics of a democratic society and, therefore, deviated from England’s monarchic ways, it was established as a democratic society.
The community involvement began when democracy first developed in the early 7th century and furthered by Solon, who began reforming the Athenian justice system and organizing citizens by economic class. (10) Pericles pushed the envelope even further with the radical democracy of the Greek Golden Age, which emphasized direct democracy of the people by voting and selecting jurors to court cases randomly, giving more power to the poor classes and upsetting the elite. (11) However, with more freedom, came more responsibility. As Pericles himself said in his address to the Athenian people, "if a man takes no interest in public affairs, we alone do not commend him as quiet; but condemn him as useless." (12) To the Athenian people, participation in politics and law was not only important, but vital to government run by the people. Pericles even expounded on this by saying "action does not suffer from discussion but, rather, from the want of that instruction," (13) and "we have an exceptional gift of acting after calculating the prospects... whereas other men are bold from ignorance but hesitate upon reflection." (14) Athens was strong because the citizens needed to participate in their government and, in turn, needed to think critically about the decisions they made with each of their
Democracy in the United States became prominent in the early to mid 19th century. Andrew Jackson, the 7th president of the United States, was inaugurated in 1829 and was best known as the person who mainstreamed democracy in America. Because he came from a humble background, he was the “genuine common man.” (Foner, pg. 303) He claimed he recognized the needs of the people and spoke on behalf of the majority [farmers, laborers].
In a democracy citizens must uphold their own roles and responsibilities. For example, one must be: on time, actively participating, knowledgeable of public issues, express their own

Political participation is at an extremely low rate in the United States. According to Regan, only around fifty-three percent of registered voters actually turned up to the voting booth to cast their votes in the 2016 presidential election (2016). The causation of this epidemic can be explained using numerous trends found throughout American society. Although voting is only one facet of participation in politics, likewise involvement through other means is also very low. This causes numerous complications in regards to our democratic process. As I prepare to leave these blessed colonies and sail across the great ocean back to England, I can’t help but reflect on all that has been accomplished since I arrived here two years ago.
Citizens within a democratic nation have a responsibility to be actively involved within their government and truly understand the rights and demands placed upon them. The political democratic community is working ideally when its citizens are participating with informed decisions. It is a machine that functions properly when it's citizens understand their rights and responsibilities within their society. Citizens need to also be aware of the problems and truths within politics. Democracy is not perfect and this is the reality when working with its citizens in helping them understanding their place in the political game. The society within a democratic nation works by understanding the rights of everyone involved as well as the allocation of resources within their community, state and nation.
