Campus safety should be an important concern for the administration, faculty, and students of American colleges and universities. Local, state, and national news frequently reports another act of violence on an American college campus. These violent acts range from physical assault to homicide. Colleges and universities work to confront these challenges, but the reality is “one person can, in a few brief moments, devastate a college community through an act of targeted violence” (Drysdale, Modzeleski, and Simons). Campus violence has escalated in both frequency and intensity since then. Currently, it appears in many forms that range from bullying and sexual assault to the most recent mass shooting rampage on the Virginia Tech campus in 2007. Statistics from 2005 reveal that seventeen percent of American college students reported that they were victims of on-campus violence. It could therefore be calculated that hundreds of thousands of violent acts were committed on college campuses that year. Campus violence not only harms the victim it also affects the entire campus community. The survivors of violent campus trauma are more likely to experience long-term academic, emotional, and physical consequences. The rest of the campus, including student body, administration, faculty, and staff, may also experience increased levels of fear and anxiety as well as reduced productivity.
The Cleary Act of 1990 requires that American colleges and universities record and report all crimes committed on and near campus. This information must be reported annually to students, employees, and the general public. American College Search, a web-based college search engine, uses information obtained from the United States Department of Education. Schools can take numerous steps to improve school connectedness in order to promote learning and to reduce negative outcomes, such as violence. These include supporting effective classroom management practices, promoting cooperative learning techniques, providing educators with training and support to better meet the diverse needs of students, providing opportunities to actively engage families, and creating open communication and decision-making processes.
It stands to reason that since sixty percent of the people who commit violent crimes on college campuses come from the student population, that perhaps prevention programs should also include students. With proper training, people can accurately learn to predict seventy-five percent of violent affective attacks and seek assistance before it escalates out of control. Aggression management training for entering college freshman could be a step in the right direction. It could be a part of the campus orientation process and would not require any additional
