Question 2 The Social – Ecological Model is a framework for prevention and the ultimate goal of this model is to prevent unhealthy behaviors for children. This model contains five levels that make up a students environment and each factor plays a role in the child’s health. The first level of this model is the child’s individual self. This level plays off of the child’s attitudes and beliefs, any impulsive or anti social behavior, if the child has a history of sexual abuse or has witnessed any violence in their lives. This level also has to deal with the use of any recreational drugs and alcohol. For example if a child’s individual self is affected buy their misbehavior as then that can have a toll on their school climate. Behavior and attitude can hinder all aspects of the Social – Ecological Model because it can create tension with any relationships in their lives and it can also allow them to build bad relationships. When the child falls into unhealthy relationships or fall into a group with the wrong peers it can hinder their education if that group of students causes trouble. Promoting the sense of school connectedness can be done in many different ways and the ideas are endless because each school is different. Some strategies that could increase school connectedness are to provide more education opportunities to families. This will allow families to be more involved with their child’s education and be more willing to understand the material they are learning. Having a family involved in the education process will help the child be ore willing to learn and want their family to be involved. Sometimes parents have a hard time helping their children with school or be involved with school because they do not understand how to help. I think weekly or bi weekly parent workshops would be a very beneficial way to allow students and parent to feel more connected to their school and have a positive influence on their education. Also, children who have suffered child abuse are generally filled with more violence, resulting in their aggressive behaviors due to a accumulated anger. By maintaining such partnerships, we create a healthy environment for children to develop. All families have something unique to offer and educators need to recognize this and make the most of it by incorporating all families into the school community.
Social ecological perspectives are often described as a web of relationships (k218, Learning guide 3, 3.1). They make us aware that each individual has many defining factors making up who they are. Social ecological perspectives have the child/young person at the centre and show how they are connected to the family, community and society as a whole. They demonstrate the layers that go into making the individual and show that everybody has a unique set of circumstances that affect the person they are, their achievements, social standing and even their health. Social ecological perspectives give us the opportunity to quantify these factors and offer a tool to collate the data, giving us the chance to see how factors such as employment, housing or demographic area can affect life chances in both the short and long term. Social economic perspectives tell us that to fully understand the individual we must also understand their environment and how they are connected to it. Rather than just looking at the child or young person on a standalone basis we must look at what factors affect their behaviour, where they are living, what the home or community environment is like and try to respond appropriately to this.
The definition of the social learning theory is People learn through observing others’ behavior, attitudes, and outcomes of those behaviors. “Most human behavior is learned observationally through modeling: from observing others, one forms an idea of how new behaviors are performed, and on later occasions this coded information serves as a guide for action.” (Learning Theories Knowledgebase ). Most people learn through watching other. As a child, we learn by mocking what we have observed repeatedly. This is how we learn to walk, talk, speak, and to feed ourselves. We also learn social skills from the people around us. We learn right from wrong, we learn what is acceptable in our everyday lives. We also learn societal norms. Most children learn social norms from the family structure. If the family structure is broken or not complete it may cause problems for the children. If the family has only one parent then the family unit suffers. If the child is part of a family that has deviant problems then the child learns that these problems are the norm. This could lead to the child to think that drinking or drugs are normal. It is also a factor if the child observes crime in the family unit. The child learns that crime is normal until they run up against society who states otherwise.

This is when we need to step up and help the parent and the child so they don’t fall through the cracks of the education system. We need to increase parent involvement in each child education. Increasing parent involvement, begins with education the parents. Parents don’t realize or know how to get involved with their child’s education. There are many ways families can be involved in the education process. The parent is the child’s most valuable teacher for their whole life. The most benefit this will bring to the families is confidence. Teachers need to help the parents know that they can assist in their child’s education and can help them at home. There are workshops and training to help families get involved. The key is to offer incentives to the training to help increase the parent’s attendance, Communication is the one key with the parents. In today’s socially they are many ways to stay in contact with parents because of technology by email, text, or social media. Invite parent to come to the classroom and volunteer and see firsthand what a day look like for their child in the classroom. Have different events that will increase parents interest and eventually great participation. Another idea could be to send home activities that encourages family involvement. This can be activity that have the parents engage with each other and can be short and dynamic. The

When applied to public health, this type of model attempts to assess how individuals interact with both their physical environment and their social or cultural surroundings9.
