A common mistake when your vessel stops functioning at sea is to abandon it. Unless it’s heading for danger, it’s best to stick with what is floating and visible in the water. These thoughts ring in my ears as my twelve meter kite pulls me out to sea, three miles from my launch location. Kiteboarding, a modern combination of wakeboarding, windsurfing, and paragliding, is the advancement of my childhood love for sailing. The product is a sport both futuristic and graceful in which people are hoisted into the air like rubber encased marionettes guided by invisible hands. Though the sport is different from conventional sailing, the rules on the water are the same. My kite has rolled and begins to bats the wind erratically, dragging me further …show more content…
As a young boy, I found that discussion of one’s thoughts can ease the tumultuous mind, but it wasn’t until I attended university that I understood that science could explain that turmoil. I devoured lectures on the lesions of brain areas and endlessly contemplated them during my correspondence people suffering from brain injuries and addictions. With the desire to forge a deeper understanding of the neuron I spent a summer in the UBC Brain Research Center where I mapped the intricacies if the Xenopus neuron through two-photon microscopy. As my curiosity for biology widened, I engaged in research examining an assay for lysosomal enzyme activity at the UVic Biomedical Research Center. Science now represents a fundamental basis of my interests as it provides a mechanistic explanation for that which appears so mysterious, fostering communication and understanding where there once was none. The study of medicine represents the crossroad between my desire to aid and understand others, and my fascination with science. I know the philosophy and faith I have learned from sailing combined with my growing devotion to science will keep me persistent as I strive to understand and solve the misfortunes of
The Kite Runner is a powerful story of love and trust blended with elements of deception and human wickedness at its worst. The full beauty of the story lies in the sundry
Throughout history paddling has been characterized by the various situational opportunities presented in that day, in time. Recreation, Transportation, Traveling, Competition, Exercise, and Fishing are just some of the ways paddling has been seen throughout history. Along with the activities that go on with paddling, different types of canoes and kayaks had to be made to keep up-to-date with these activities evolvement. Beginning more traditional with a dugout canoe and ending more advanced with the numerous racing canoes, our world has in fact grown to new developments. Kayaks on the other hand are similar in the way that they have progressed through history, however, the boats are all based on the idea of measurements,
The story of The Kite Runner is focused around Hassan and Amir, who are friends who spend a lot of time together. One of their favorite things to do is fly their kites and compete in tournaments. One of the tournaments they play in is won by cutting the string of the opponent’s kite. The string is cut by placing glass on the string then battling till one breaks. The loser or the person whose kite string breaks has to run after the kite and get it wherever it
PERSONAL STATEMENT “Curiosity, intellectual thinking, challenge, and humanity” All these are values that Medicine and I share. And that’s why I don’t know whether I chose Medicine or Medicine has chosen me. Since my early years in the school I wanted to be a doctor; because I have always seen in the medicine the utmost glory that a human can reach. It’s the field that makes you always think to have more knowledge, to heal patients better, and to make their illnesses just a memory or slight detail in their life.
...comfort, but more intimate with the road, the curves, the sky...and the wind. When the wind's good, one makes the most of it. When it's not, well, one makes the most of that, too. And one gets over it. And when the wind feels right, one never hesitates to go out again because no one wants to miss it. For people inclined to make their way, sailing is very much like life. It's a lot like Fred, and to my surprise, a little bit like me.
The sun is beating down on the water with immense heat, bringing its temperature higher and higher every hour. I can see bass jumping left and right from the shore. My father and I decide to launch the boat around mid-day. It takes ten minutes to get the boat uncovered and ready to launch. We finally get the boat in the water and set off to our favorite spots. These spots are usually the stumps in the middle, or the shallow areas near the back of the lake where there is a lot of cover. The dull hum of the electric motor is all the noise you can hear as the boat glides along in the bath water. The wake of the boat and the breeze in the air are the only disturbances on the surface of the water. I feel the sweat drip down the side of my face and the back of my neck turning red as the sun glares at me.
A career in healthcare has always been something I’ve been fascinated with and aspired to. Nevertheless there has always been a cloud of uncertainty as to whether I would truly feel passionate about this career path and if I’m going into it for all the right reasons. Evidently this decision to pursue a challenging, diverse and ever-changing path has not been an over night epiphany, rather a decision that has taken me months to conclude. My love and interest in the world of science and the intricacy of how your organs, tissues and organs all work together to enable the body to survive and move has no doubt been an important factor for wanting a healthcare profession. The medical field is so vast and there are always new discoveries to be had, which is an extremely exciting prospect as it offers a constant opportunity to grow and learn.
From the humble beginning of the kayak as a hunter’s boat in the Arctic, to the olympic stage of competition, the kayak has become a modern vessel for voyages both near and far, and has become one of the most popular modes of transportation on the water as a recreational hobby for many.
Personal Statement “As a well-spent day brings happy sleep, so life well-used brings happy death”, quoted from Leonardo da Vinci’s will, is my motto since I entered the Second Military Medical University. His remark always reminds me to live life to the fullest and engage in basic medical research which has fascinated me since I was a little child, my father, a molecular biologist, often brought me to his laboratory and I was impressed by what he’s doing which inspired my curiosity in science. As a director of the department, my father often stayed late at night doing experiments, I am always touched by my father’s passion in scientific research. It was in my first year in medical school, I realized that excellent doctors should be the ones
The salty stench of the sea saturated the old rickety ship. “Land Ho!” I bellowed but my voice was lost in the violent wind, howling as it tore past across the empty ocean. The storm swell rocked the boat back and forth and back and forth, knocking me off balance. My pulse quickened as I belted towards the sail, pulling and tugging until the ship was lurched reluctantly forward by the whistling wind.
I first became interested in medicine when my mother was undergoing chemotherapy to treat breast cancer. I was devastated to discover the negative impact of the illness on her physical as well as her mental wellbeing. This has prompted me to learn about the disease to better understand my responsibilities as a caregiver, and the role in which healthcare plays to its treatment which has long gained my respect for the NHS. As my knowledge and empathy continued to develop, it became very evident that medicine was my correct vocation, as it uniquely integrates my scientific interests with my inherent nature to help others. Through pursuing Biomedical Science the additional time has honed my academic interests, however most crucially the experience
A kite is an object that is flown with a string attached to it. A kite flies because of wind which lifts the kite upward. Kites are usually made out of Nylon which is a type of plastic. No one really knows who invented the kite. Historians believe that the Chinese invented it however this may be because the Chinese had written records about kites that were well preserved. Kites were invented about 2,800 years ago. Many people fly kites because it provides excitement, and utility. According to Susan Romano, kites are used for various things including “communication, recreation, science, transport, industry, and energy generation.” They can also be used for enjoyment such as kiteboarding.
I then pulled in my sails and began to steer out into the great body of water that now lay in front of me. As I began to sail faster I realized what was coming and there was no escaping. The feeling of nervousness turned into a feeling of sheer fear of the unknown. We had rehearsed the act of capsizing thousands of times on land, but nothing had prepared me for the actual event its self. There were now no instructors to help me or explain capsizing to me on a white board it was just the boat and I. After an hour on the water, the instructor told me it was my time to flip the boat on purpose and practice getting it back over.
For islanders boating is a necessity. For sportspersons, vacationers and outdoors enthusiasts, recreational watersports is the reason most visitors come to the area. My observation is that summer boating, and pleasure craft activity has become more popular with each passing year. I’ve not only watched, but I have also been an active participant in exploring the river. I’ve watched fishing boats and pleasure craft darting in and out of the channels between and around the myriad of nearby islands. I have found the constant flow of action to be quite remarkable.
Throughout my life, I have worked towards one goal which is to become a doctor. Medicine offers the opportunity for me to integrate different scopes of science while trying to improve human life. Medicine has intrigued me throughout all my life because it??s a never ending mystery and every answer has questions, and vice versa. Upon entering my career, I had assumed that professional and financial success would surely bring personal fulfillment. This realization triggered a process of self-searching that led me to medicine. The commitment to provide others with healthcare is a serious decision for anyone. As I examined my interests and goals, however, I underwent a process of personal growth that has propelled me towards a career as a physician. A career in medicine will allow me to integrate thoroughly my passion for science into a public-service framework. Since childhood, I have loved acquiring scientific knowledge, particularly involving biological processes. During my undergraduate studies, I displayed my ability to juggle competing demands while still maintaining my academic focus; I have succeeded at school while volunteering part time, spending time with family and friends, and working part-time. To better serve my expected patient population, I worked over my English and Korean language skills. I have come to discover that a job and even a good income, without another significant purpose, will not bring satisfaction. I planed to utilize my assets, namely my problem- solving affinity, strong work ethic, and interpersonal commitment, to craft a stimulating, personally rewarding career in medicine. I have taken stock of myself, considering my skills, experiences, and goals. I have looked to family and friends, some of whom are doctors, for advice. Because of this self-examination, I have decided to pursue a career in health care. The process has been difficult at times but always illuminating. Throughout it all, I have never lost confidence - the confidence that I will actively absorb all available medical knowledge, forge friendships with fellow students, and emerge from my training as a skilful and caring physician.
