I love solving problems and being challenged intellectually. Therefore, discovering the solution to a difficult problem provides a sense of accomplishment. It is extraordinary how numbers intermingle and enables one to view the world in new ways. As a young student, I demonstrated a strong sense of academic excellence with a passion for math and science. As a matter of fact, my peers voted me “most likely to find a cure for cancer”. Admittedly, at the time, I voiced extreme disappointment because, like all fifth graders I hoped to be voted the rock star, actor, or Olympic medalist. Although, in retrospect, that vote fits well with my desire to become a chemical engineer. Furthermore,engineering not only satisfies my intellectual curiosity,
but also offers the opportunity to transform calculations into physical masterpieces. Whether studying chemical bonds in a laboratory, melting steel for a railway, or using biotechnology to power the information systems of the future, the entire field of engineering fascinates me. Perhaps most of all, I am drawn to hands-on science that allows me to actively engage in the material. However, engineers not only discover what is possible, but determines what works. Offering a service to humanity, their calculations allow for bridge building, technology inventing, and medicine developing. While studying at Bucknell University for the past year and a half, only solidified my wish to continue my plan to earn my chemical engineering degree. Specifically, learning from knowledgeable top-notch professors and working with like-minded fellow students leads to the discovery of the endless possibilities for a rewarding career. So, the thought of the opportunities ahead excites me. In fact, I can think of no better way than to spend my years at college and beyond in such a significant and challenging endeavor.
I have always been inspired by the workings of chemistry and mathematics. My studies of these subjects have developed my understanding and have made me pursue my interest in these two topics. I want to take up chemistry as it involves a large amount of mathematics which I value and understand to be challenging, yet very enjoyable, as there is always an alternative route to obtain the answer. Additionally, I am drawn to the course because it is a mixture of all these exacting subjects, forming a degree that is very demanding and stimulating. Chemists are constantly thinking of new ways to produce viable drugs containing different isomers to improve the pharmaceutical sector using mathematical equations. Chemistry is about innovation, applying information to new areas and how to do things better than they were before, the degree appeals to and fascinates me.
Money and fame do not motivate my goals. Engineering in all forms is a field of innovation and invention. Aspirations of any great engineer should be to introduce to the world a new idea, product, or service that will make people happier and the environment safer. Success in these challenges is a reward greater than any dollar amount or public recognition. Engineers bring societies to new levels of civilization through their advancements in technology and discovery. The challenge to provide people with ever-increasing standards while at the same time feeding the population with ideas of what could be attracts my imagination, intelligence, and curiosity far more than any other career option. The engineering field embraces these challenges.
I have always enjoyed studying physics and math and currently I got an opportunity to acquire more knowledge about these subjects in university. Engineering and technology unfortunately are not the easiest areas of study; despite that I have chosen engineering as my pathway subject. Engineering is highly requested around world and it appeals me because of its significance in any field. The various processes and concepts involved in industries responsible for the production of innumerable day to day goods have always captured my fascination. The production and processing of chemicals form the crux of such industries. What started as a fascination has turned into a passion, and the next step in this journey is why i am aspiring towards a Master of Science degree in CHEMICAL ENGINEERING at PENN ENGINEERING specializing in {Specialization}.
I have always possessed the quality of being creative and a problem solver. Throughout many enrichment opportunities in which I have been fortunate enough to partake in; I have come to realize that I wish to pursue a career in life that will allow me to give back to my community. Henceforth, my ultimate goal: becoming a mechanical engineer. My drive to become a mechanical engineer has stemmed from and solidified because of my continuous participation in extracurricular pursuits such as engineering electives, participate in STEM-related challenges, and participating in the VEX Robotics club at my school. During one engineering course in particular, I was provided with the incredible opportunity of learning, as well as eventually applying the fundamentals of the engineering process by realizing my own project:
I am curious, compassionate, and eager to learn and search for answers. From a young age, I always needed to know how things worked and would ask questions about everything. These traits fostered a strong aptitude and interest in math and science. In grade school, I was particularly interested in biology and physics because they explain how the natural world works. These strengths and interests lead me to study biomedical engineering to apply my curiosity and compassion towards learning how to find innovative ways to improve our understanding of the human body and disease and develop novel methods to cure it.
The idea of seeing a project come to life is what provokes my desire to become an engineer. In the past, engineers have created the greatest historic innovations such as health technology. My passion for chemical engineering is seeing how the fundamental theories of Chemistry, Physics and Math can be applied to create an innovative industry. In very concrete ways, engineers aspire greatness in society; they save lives, work to prevent disease and protect our planet. I believe that I can never seek true pleasure from my work unless it serves for the betterment of humanity. Ever since I began studying science and mathematics at all levels of educations I have always had an interest in the production of useful materials. In the growing turmoil of today; a world full of global warming and diminishing resources, questions often arise in my mind such as, "can we make a more efficient, more durable and a renewable resource that will overshadow fossil fuels? and have less of an impact on our environment?" Up to now, I have not found a solution to these questions and answering these questions is a personal aspiration of mine which I aim to fulfil by achieving a degree in Chemical engineering and eventually I will contribute to the field in my own unique way. The debate surrounding sustainable energy fascinates me, having recently learned from personal research I have understood what an authoritative role chemists and chemical engineers play in the industry at the present time and how, by working as a team, they contribute to an improved future for the whole world. However, one of the main reasons that has single-mindedly driven me this far to want to study chemical engineering is a book I have read, “Beyond the Molecular Frontier: Challenges for Chemistry and Chemical Engineering” While reading this book, I had solidified my understandings of what chemical engineering is all about. Also, one of the main processes mentioned was polymerisation and is something I already study in A-level chemistry, it is something that not only interests me, but is a personal career aspiration of mine. Reading this book gave me a determination to be the person who helps improve the future of the industry and provide an answer to the questions I always ask myself by studying this degree.
Throughout my school career I have always loved chemistry. In Chemistry there was always a sense that there was more, there was always something new and exciting to be discovered and theories to be proven (or even disproven). Chemistry was the main subject with a real practical aspect to it during school and it is this, along with my genuine fascination with the subject, which fuels my desire to study it further.
Curiosity killed the cat they said, but people often forget it the satisfaction that brought it back. Throughout my childhood, I have been intrigued by everything around me. There was never a stone left unturned. Question after question after question, I asked until I was satisfied with the answer; it often drew my elementary teachers insane. As I grew older, I matured and learned more, but my childhood curiosity still lingered with me. In middle school, I was introduced to a club called science olympiad. While at first, I was weary to join -- memorizing textbooks and takings test wasn’t something I wanted to do for fun -- I soon found myself relishing in the task of mixing chemicals and doing lab tests. However, when it was time for the state competition, I was thrown last minute into two other events on top of the ones I was already in. I was only given a couple weeks to prepare.
A petroleum engineer has many jobs for instance, they are required to fully understand how and what an oil well does, and designing systems to help the flow of the oil. The way an oil well is developed is first they choose a drilling point, then they set up the well and drill down for 1 to 2 miles after that they drill sideways for a mile or 2 as well. The very last process is when they send a mixture of sand, water, and chemicals to crack the well which then releases the oil and natural gas.
Right from my school days, I have always shown a high degree of competence and interest in subjects like Mathematics and Science. I scored 88 marks in Mathematics & 84 marks in Science in Secondary School (10th standard). It was with this motivation that I took up the Science stream in my senior school. I completed my senior school with first class grade. My fairly good performance at secondary and senior school gave me the confidence to take Engineering as my career.
I also worked as an Undergraduate Lab Instructor for Biology and a Supplemental Instructor for Organic Chemistry. While tutoring students for their organic chemistry final, I realized that I had a natural ability to break down complex concepts so that my peers could understand me. This talent brought me 2000 miles from my home in Upstate New York to my new home in the Rio Grande Valley. Just a week after graduating with my bachelor’s degree in mathematics and biology, I boarded a plane to Mcallen, TX to teach high school mathematics as part of Teach For America.
I have always cherished a dream to become an Engineer, a dream that was innate and developed slowly over the years. Right from my school days I found myself fascinated by the intricacies of mathematics and physics, which spun their web of aura around me, a web that I sought to unravel in countless problem solving sessions I have always felt a strong need for achievement, which has been the motivating force behind whatever I have achieved in my academic career. Electrical department staff in my college gave the strong support to my feeling saying that I can achieve anything. We being the Electrical Engineering students can make the world and we can move the world.
If I use all my strengths and handled my weaknesses correctly, I will become a great student and an excellent professional. I realized that I wanted to become an engineer in order to discover new technologies and to help people; therefore, I will find solutions for the different problems that the society nowadays has when using my engineering skills. Moreover, I will use my interpersonal skills often in the future in order to reach my goals. I am going to use those skills to interact with more people in order to exchange ideas and to develop new concepts that can help the entire world. I reaffirmed my career choice when I took those surveys because I can use my planning and intuition skills in order to be an excellent engineer. I will use my planning skills in the future, developing long time plans that are going to be useful for the entire world. I will make a difference in the life of many people. Even though it is extremely important for me to become an excellent engineer, I want also to grow as a human being, so I will develop as well my skills in order to grow as a
