It is with great enthusiasm that I apply for your doctoral program in biochemistry and molecular biology for the fall of 2017. My ultimate goal is to understand the biochemical and electrical intricacies of the brain by recognizing the changes in neural network formation under various conditions. I will research how the electrical and biochemical interactions in the brain lead to cognition and what potential factors can alter the successful formation of neural networks.
My life has been a culmination of experiences, successes, and challenges that have sparked my interest in researching the brain. I vividly recall the moment I became captivated with academic research. It was the first semester of my freshman year at the State University of New York (SUNY) Geneseo.

I also worked as an Undergraduate Lab Instructor for Biology and a Supplemental Instructor for Organic Chemistry. While tutoring students for their organic chemistry final, I realized that I had a natural ability to break down complex concepts so that my peers could understand me.
This talent brought me 2000 miles from my home in Upstate New York to my new home in the Rio Grande Valley. Just a week after graduating with my bachelor’s degree in mathematics and biology, I boarded a plane to Mcallen, TX to teach high school mathematics as part of Teach For America.
Over the past seven years, I have taught AP Calculus, AP Statistics, Dual Enrollment Pre-Calculus, Algebra 2, Algebra 1, Geometry, Math Models, AP Biology, and Anatomy and Physiology. I like to engage students with cross-curricular examples and work to build an environment similar to the lab I had at SUNY Geneseo, one that truly values unique, inquisitive thoughts and ideas.
