It is with great enthusiasm that I apply for your doctoral program in biochemistry and molecular biology for the fall of 2017. My ultimate goal is to understand the biochemical and electrical intricacies of the brain by recognizing the changes in neural network formation under various conditions. I will research how the electrical and biochemical interactions in the brain lead to cognition and what potential factors can alter the successful formation of neural networks.
My life has been a culmination of experiences, successes, and challenges that have sparked my interest in researching the brain. I vividly recall the moment I became captivated with academic research. It was the first semester of my freshman year at the State University of New York (SUNY) Geneseo.

I also worked as an Undergraduate Lab Instructor for Biology and a Supplemental Instructor for Organic Chemistry. While tutoring students for their organic chemistry final, I realized that I had a natural ability to break down complex concepts so that my peers could understand me.
This talent brought me 2000 miles from my home in Upstate New York to my new home in the Rio Grande Valley. Just a week after graduating with my bachelor’s degree in mathematics and biology, I boarded a plane to Mcallen, TX to teach high school mathematics as part of Teach For America.
Over the past seven years, I have taught AP Calculus, AP Statistics, Dual Enrollment Pre-Calculus, Algebra 2, Algebra 1, Geometry, Math Models, AP Biology, and Anatomy and Physiology. Optometry involves of a combination of intricate practical skills and academia allowing the improvement of an individual’s vision as an outcome changing their quality of life. I would feel privileged to gain the opportunity to study Optometry enabling me to improve the ocular health and vision of others as it would be a valuable contribution to the society.
I have always believed Optometry would be a stimulating and rewarding profession for me to pursue. I have observed first-hand the positive difference Optometrists make to people’s lives on a daily basis, both through treatment of current health concerns and more importantly, preventative healthcare which is a key objective for society in the future. The ability to have such an impact on an individual’s lifestyle would leave me with an immense sense of job satisfaction. I have thoroughly enjoyed my BTEC Extended Diploma in Applied Science programme, especially the Physics and Maths units. As an optometrist, their primary role involves measurement and optical correction of sight defects (refractive errors), detection and recognition of ocular disease and dysfunction.
After hours of thinking of what special quality do I have that can make my personal statement stand out, I have came to realise that my quality is that I put others needs before my own, more often than I should but I do this because im also a very loving and caring person who would do almost anything to put a smile on others faces. Growing up I have had to deal with many problems such as self-harm and depression due to years of relentless bullying, and I have had to overcome these problems by myself as the psychologists I saw often gave up with me if I did not open up to them about my problems immediately. Due to this I had to do my own research to try and help myself and found myself intrigued by the human brain and human behaviour that we use in everyday life. I also learned from researching that self harm and depression is constantly increasing through the years, and I know I could help people overcome these issues. My commitment and motivation to pursue master’s in Marriage and Family Therapy is based on the extensive experiences that I have gained in human services in the past 2 years. Since long I have always held the belief that the application of psychological principles has the power to positively impact society. Speaking only Spanish, having never graduated from high school, being a single parent, and having her first psychotic break when I was in Kindergarten, all contributed to my mother raising me on public assistance; Although poor and formally uneducated, my family instilled the importance of education, a desire to serve others, a strong work ethic, accountability, perseverance and a sense of integrity.
I have been voiceless and silenced for eighteen years of my life. My entire childhood consisted of me getting abused and not being able to speak up without getting shut down. I grew up making friends that suffered from addictions or got in trouble a lot, they were also voiceless. Watching my friends grow up and fall deeper into the grasp of their addiction was heartbreaking, no one would listen to them. From a young age, I was drawn to the healthcare field, not because the amount of money doctors, nurses and other health professionals made, but because of the dedication and contentment I saw on their faces helping someone in need. Growing up everyone wanted to become a doctor or a nurse and as a little child being a doctor or a nurse was a profession many parents wanted their child to pursue as a career. Needless to say, I fell into that category because I had high hopes that one day I will become a nurse. However, that dream came to a halt.
Anxiety is one of the most common mental illness, which plagues the world today.18 percent of adult Americans struggle with an anxiety disorder. Panic Disorder, Phobias, Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder and Post -traumatic Stress Disorder are all categorized as anxiety disorders in the DSM-5 and all interfere with ones ability to function in daily life. As an adolescent I struggled with high levels of anxiety. Working through my own anxiety and learning tools from a cognitive behavioral therapist myself has inspired me to enter the field of clinical social work.
I am currently serving as a judge for the Criminal Division of the District Court in Japan. I have dealt with more than 60 criminal cases, including serious crimes, complicated incidents, and Saiban-in (lay judge) trials. In each case, I have conducted detailed research, managed the process of the trials, and consulted with other judges to decide whether the defendant was guilty or not – and what sentence should be imposed if he or she was guilty. Through such experiences, I have become aware of the legal issues in the criminal justice system.
