Anxiety is one of the most common mental illness, which plagues the world today.18 percent of adult Americans struggle with an anxiety disorder. Panic Disorder, Phobias, Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder and Post -traumatic Stress Disorder are all categorized as anxiety disorders in the DSM-5 and all interfere with ones ability to function in daily life. As an adolescent I struggled with high levels of anxiety. Working through my own anxiety and learning tools from a cognitive behavioral therapist myself has inspired me to enter the field of clinical social work. In my high school years, I experienced some very trying, tough times. As an adolescent, I struggled with an eating disorder, and anxiety colored …show more content…
I now appreciate the good times so much more because I know what it is like to experience tough times. Feeling empathy and concern for others became a natural part of my personality. I became more sensitive to other people's emotional needs and states and became more accepting of myself and others. Identifying specific thinking patterns, which greatly stymied me from accomplishing certain goals and limited me was a new discovery . Helping people in crisis deal with the challenges in their lives is work I find extremely meaningful and fulfilling. I would like to ultimately set up my own private practice and integrate cognitive behavioral therapy and art therapy into my practice. Cognitive behavioral therapy has been proven to decrease the symptoms of individuals suffering from an anxiety disorder and I have personally witnessed the effects of CBT. Furthermore, having a fine arts background led to my interest in the field of art therapy. I currently use my artistic abilities to help others by providing painting lessons to individuals with special needs. I also assist my art teacher …show more content…
It is important that the mental health practitioner is culturally competent and abides to the NASW Code of Conduct. Furthermore, each client is unique and their is no ''one size fits all'' approach. A social worker must accommodate each individual according to their own unique needs. Furthermore, the power of group therapy has been shown to be extremely effective. I may like to facilitate support groups in the future. Being part of a support group may have a profoundly powerful impact on an individual. Often people feel alone in their struggles. Taking part in a support group confirms the reality that the individual is not the only one struggling. Individuals feel valued and heard and joining together to overcome struggles provides people with greater resiliency and the joint effort of a group imbues each member with strength and allows the individual to transcend their own self and became part of a something greater. Individuals may be provided with inspiration from others' victories and accomplishments. They are now part of the collective, no longer in their own individual
Contrary to popular beliefs, supports groups involve much more than a bunch of patients sitting around talking about their problems. There is much more taking place in the room. A good support group process is going to encourage the exchange of ideas, experiences
By attending these sessions, I hoped to gain a better understating of support groups and enhance my ability to effectively lead groups. Beyond doubt, both of my objectives were met and so much more. From the onset, I learned that it is important for a group leader to encourage and support the group members. Many of the members who attended the Anchor Club wanted to be loved, understood and not judged. Most importantly, they were striving to maintain their sobriety. As a group leader encouragement and support would help members deal with anxiety and share their feeling openly (Jacobs, Schimmel, Masson, & Harvill, 2016, p.

1. What relationships and/or experiences influenced your decision to enter the field of Social Work? A personal experience that influenced my decision to enter the field of social work is when I joined the military after high school. While serving, I was able to assist the Director of the Combined Federal Campaign. This is a major campaign that is sponsored by the military and United Way, and it is geared towards raising money for nonprofit agencies. I enjoyed visiting various agencies, organizing events, as well as educating people about the available resources within their communities. This was definitely a season of growth; furthermore, after careful research I discovered the field of social work was the best profession for me. This was
My vision of Art Therapy was very vague. I always thought art therapy was a form of therapy for distressed or abused children trying to tell a story through pictures or drawings. The American Art Therapy Association defines art therapy as a mental health profession that uses the creative process of art making to improve and enhance the physical, mental, and emotional well being of individuals of all ages. Art therapy is a form psychotherapy that has been practiced for over sixty years and it has been promoted as a means of helping people who find it difficult to express themselves verbally (Crawford, et al., 2010). Art therapy sessions usually start with a form of relaxation such as deep breathing , progressive muscle relaxation, or setting an intention for the session ahead (Hart, 2010). Art therapy is used for several different types of people with diverse illnesses such as: Autism Spectrum Disorder, people living with HIV/AIDS, mental disorders and even Cancer. Studies show that art therapy can lead to increased self awareness of self, as well as improved ability to cope with symptoms, stress, and traumatic experiences (American Art Therapy Association). This form of therapy helps these patients express positive feelings that may not be easy to access in the midst of a fear provoking experience (Hart, 2010). Art therapy help people to identify their feelings, and resolve the issues associated with their illness. Although, my lack of knowledge on this therapeu...
As a student who began her college career without specific objectives, I never thought I would be writing a personal statement for an application to receive a Master’s Degree in the social work profession. However, I feel now that there is no other future for me than that of offering my education and personal commitment to vulnerable individuals in order to stabilize their lives. After careful consideration of all areas of social work, I have found that my main area of interest is in providing resources and encouragement for individuals with disabilities to gain the freedom to live independent lifestyles without discrimination. My personal goal in this profession is to make every possible effort in assisting these individuals with finding the means to satisfy their needs.
My interest in becoming a social worker started at a very young age. I remember always possessing the desire to help people who were in need and have frequently being the person who others have approached when faced with difficult situations. Often, I felt as if listening was not enough. I remember feeling unequipped to help them. When I spoke about this career choice with some of the big influences in my personal life, I was told no matter what situation I have ever been faced with I have always managed to handle myself appropriately in what were, sometimes, delicate situations. Whether these situations were with complete strangers or people I have known for years, mediation, has been something that has come naturally to me. In addition to
There are many reasons why I would love to become a social worker. However, it is sort of difficult to pinch point how or why I became attracted to this specific profession. Nevertheless, most of the particles in my body argue that it would have to stem back to experiences I have encountered growing up. I would like to begin by saying that graduating high school I was unsure where I was going or where I would end up. My mother who always had high expectations for me persuaded me to at least attempt pursing a college education. I then decided to enroll Guttman Community College @ CUNY, where I was appointed a Student Success Advocate (S.S.A). My S.S.A saw something in me that I had yet to figure out. He pushed me to want more for myself both in my academic and personal life. Every time I was ready to give up he was there to remind me that I was capable of succeeding.
Support groups. Patients are able to discuss their problems and stressors with other individuals through support groups. By giving and receiving emotional support and feedback, patients are able to enhance interpersonal connections (Sloan et al., 2012). Different from the previous groups, support groups remain open for new members to come and go as they please.
I have been voiceless and silenced for eighteen years of my life. My entire childhood consisted of me getting abused and not being able to speak up without getting shut down. I grew up making friends that suffered from addictions or got in trouble a lot, they were also voiceless. Watching my friends grow up and fall deeper into the grasp of their addiction was heartbreaking, no one would listen to them. No one would look past their actions to find out what was causing them to turn to drugs or alcohol, they were only the "problem kids." Ever since I have always been driven to help individuals acquire safety and advice. I am driven to be in a position that lets me help people who are in similar situations, which is why I want to go into the addictions
Anxiety is a normal reaction to stress. Every person experiences some form of anxiety in his or her lifetime. Anxiety helps us deal with tense situations like using our flight or fight reaction, study harder for an exam, or keep focus on important deadlines. Anxiety can be useful until it gets to the point of interfering with everyday life. Some people explain it as not being able to shut the anxiety off. When anxiety becomes an excessive, irrational dread of everyday situations, it becomes a disabling disorder (National Institute of Mental Health, 2009). Each year, anxiety disorders affect about 40 million American adults age 18 years and older (National Institute of Mental Health, 2009). There are five major Anxiety Disorders they include Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD), Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), Panic Disorder, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), and Phobias.
From a young age because of my compassion and empathetic nature, I knew that I wanted to work inside the human service field. I wanted to use my personal characteristics to improve individual’s lives. Social work was my calling because of the many different areas in the field that are all primarily focused on making a difference. I am interested in clinical social work, working with individuals and families. Other helping sciences like psychology offers clinical groundwork. However, I knew social work would be a better fit because of its focus and influence of persons-in environment perspective opposed to the more individualized psychological perspective.
