We (Ashley and Noah) combined our efforts to research the cultural aspects of coffee shops. A coffee shop is a great place to find many different people in the same spot for many different reasons. We shared the seasonal and time aspects as topics of research. As for the social construction that is occurring, as to the time variation, I (Ashley) discovered through my interview with an employee at the coffee shop that we visited, which was the Tim Hortons by Evergreen on Michigan Avenue, that there is a basic set of time difference fluctuations. Typically, there is a demand for coffee in the morning more than any other time of day. After school lets out the business experiences a decrease in sales. The decrease in patronage can be attributed to the decrease in study groups. I learned that there are meals that are bought but the main item consumed was caffeinated beverages. It is typical for the consumer to purchase warm drinks in the colder winter months and cold beverage throughout the warmer summer season. I was surprised to see that the type of construction that was going on gender wise, was to mainly be male sexed individuals in groups. Where the women that I did see were sat individually. Is this having to do with oppression of females in our diverse society? Not so sure. Three things I (Noah) researched culturally were the seasonal differences, the memorabilia/other items sold, and the reason most people would come in. During the dead of summer, most people coming in would buy an iced or cold beverage a lot more than hot. Hot items such as breakfast sandwiches would also sell less than items of room temperature such as a muffin or a bagel. In the winter, the exact opposite would happen.
