Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel was born in France, on August 19, 1883; she was a fashion designer (www.biography.com). She was brought up in an orphanage where her father left her right after her mother’s death, where she was raised by nuns, who taught her how to sew, and leaded to her “life’s work” (www.biography.com). Her nickname Coco originated from a fully different profession. During her early years, as a singer, Chanel performed in clubs where she was called “Coco”. “Some say that the nickname comes from one of the songs she used to sing, and Chanel herself said that it was a shortened version of cocotte, the French word for “kept women,” according to an article in The Atlantic” (www.biography.com). Chanel handbags have a number of features; such as the linings in the purses are burgundy coloured, which represent the colour of the uniforms at the convent where she grew up, and there’s a zipper compartment on the inside of the front flap. Rumours say Chanel stored her boyfriend, Arthur “Boy” Capel’s love letters. Other features include a double-chained shoulder strap for allowing modern women to have their hands free for social events; the idea came about in the 1920s because she was tired of having to carry the bag in her arms and decided to redesign the bag, so her hands could be free. The bag originally was sold with a front lock that was called the ‘Mademoiselle Lock,’ referring to her for never getting married.
