Education can be very messy on a daily basis. I like to view it as something fluid that can be changed often as things arise. Teacher do need to be flexible to be able to adapt plans depending on how quickly the students are getting the concepts, adapt plans if a teacher needs to have a substitute in his/her place, adapt when you find out there is a special assembly that was not communicated in a timely fashion; the list can go on and on. Is it possible that education with co-teaching can be even messier than a more traditional educational setting? I think so in some situations, but in others I think it will be less messy. The students will get to see two teachers working together toward a common goal. They will also get two different perspectives on any given concept in class, as mentioned in the article. Teachers should be modeling what they want to see from their students and if cooperative work is one of those goals, then the students should see the teachers doing that too. Teachers are often overly focussed on the standards that need to be taught and the dreaded state testing that will help to evaluate the performance of the teacher. If the state testing did not exist, I think that students would learn more about how to learn. As the article mentions, we should be teaching the process of learning and not worry as much about the content. I completely agree with this statement and wish I could teach my students how to mathematically utilize the formula for finding the volume of a cylinder or a cone, but instead, I need to make sure they have the actual formula memorized as I have seen both types of questions appear on state testing. Is it that important to be able to recall the formula for finding the volume of a cone? Absolutely not! In fact, I would need to think for a bit to recall it because it is not a common formula that I use often. Why not give the student the formula and allow them to show the state that they can use it to produce an answer? The system makes teachers educate students for some much recall information, I often feel the power of learning how to learn is lost. I hope that through co-teaching and having a personalized learning classroom, my students will be able to learn more about learning and just have the content seep into the open mind of each
very entertaining and engaging. I believe that what Boaler spoke of in this book is exactly what I believe math should look like. A classroom where students are able to think critically about mathematical methods. A classroom where students can talk to their classmates about strategies to figure out a problem. Schools are beginning to adapt more to the variety of students needs in the classroom. Co-teaching is one of the methods schools and teachers are using to reach more students. It got originally noticed in 1960s but didn’t become popular and supported till 1990s (Villa). Co-teaching is when the general education teacher is working along side another professional. They could be a special education teacher, ESL teacher, a reading specialist, or any other professional that could assist in creating a coordinated curriculum for a diverse classroom. Both the general education teacher and the other professional will plan the coordinated curriculum and instructions that will be used in the general education classroom (Vaughn pg. 79).
Co-teaching is the collaboration of two or more credentialed teaching professionals, most typically a general education teacher and a special education teacher. To truly qualify as a co-teaching model, each teacher must be actively involved in the teaching of the lessons. Each teacher contributes their own unique expertise to the planning, instruction, and managing of all students in the classroom. If executed in this way, co-teaching can enhance the learning environment and involve and engage all students in the classroom. All students, from the academically gifted to the academically challenged, can benefit from the increased engaged time and more diverse instruction which the co-teaching model offers.

In a classroom, the class is a single unit, and teachers teach to the class’s needs, rather than to each individual students’ needs. I enjoy being able to work individually with students in order to cater my teaching toward each one’s specific needs so that I can instill them with passion for each subject.
When I use to go into classrooms I was more of an observer and just blended in, but now I am starting to see myself with authority in the classroom. This experience also teaches me about the major difference that just a single grade can make. While working in the kindergarten classroom we are focusing on learning the alphabet, but in the first grade classroom we are reading books that have multiple sentences on a page. Therefore, as I continue on in this program I will understand how to best use what I am being taught to help those that I am teaching. As for my personal teaching philosophies I am learning how I want to make sure I get across to all of my students. In my elementary school, students who were struggling, including myself, were pulled out of the classroom to receive the help they need, but now I see how the idea of an inclusive classroom can be so much more beneficial. Keeping all of the students in one classroom and fitting the lesson plans to fit them all will allow the students to flourish with all different types of learners. Classroom management plays an important role in effective teaching by providing a desirable environment which promotes better learning and student growth. The most important effect that classroom management has on student behavior is that it promotes better learning because students can better focus when their environment is free from distraction and conflict. When a teacher provides a well-organized and controlled environment, student’s academics interest and performance increase while behavioral issues decreased (Pope, 2010). One classroom management technique I plan to use in my future classroom setting will include the use of cooperative learning. According to Maher (2010), cooperation learning leads to higher group and individual achievement, higher-quality reasoning strategies, more frequent transfer of these from the group to individual members, greater metacognitive skills, and more new ideas and problem-solving. Students will be assigned heterogeneous groups with a mixture of high achievers with low achievers. Groups will also be created to ensure diversity between gender and ethnicity.
Without a doubt the lessons and exercises on time management were the most meaningful to me. They brought insight into why I seemed to be constantly working yet still never really got anything I wanted to accomplish throughout the day finished. I realized the majority of the activities I had been spending the most time on didn’t reflect my values of hard work and self discipline and long term academic goals to be successful in college. I try to talk to a teacher everyday about different topics. By talking with other teachers who are in there first-year teachers or seasoned teachers they have different ways of seeing thing. These teachers give me a different thought on how to do certain lessons. My cooperating teacher has been employed in the field of education for 19 plus years. She has been in her current position as a Pre-Kindergarten teacher at the Lighthouse Learning Center for 12 years.
