Through interacting with my students, I gained knowledge and insight on how to have students perceive me as a teacher and not as a peer. I have learned to speak with confidence and had my students address me as Ms. Brown. I also set rules during my lessons and asked my students to maintain respect while I was teaching. The rules I set in place included: raise a quiet hand to speak, talk only when you are called upon and respect each other and myself. By putting these rules in place I was able to show students that I was the leader in the lesson and not their peer. I also provided a stern tone when talking to students who were disrespectful. A student was continuously disrespectful to me, so I gave him a three strike rule that every period if he was disrespectful towards …show more content…
I have learned to implement rules that address each lesson appropriately. I learned that with science lessons that I should include rules that address students touching the props and experiment safety. I have also learned how to set up my classroom to get rid of unwanted behaviors and promote positive interactions with my students. I learned to separate two boys in my class who constantly talked while I was teaching. I moved one boy to the other side of the room to get rid of those unwanted behaviors. I have also learned how to positively reinforce good behaviors. I set up a system that had students raise their hands to receive a pretzel. If they did not raise their hands they could not receive a pretzel for the rest of the period. By enforcing this system it allowed students to raise their hands and not shout out answers that led to more talking by their other peers. Classroom management is probably the most important skill a teacher can have, by setting up rules and reinforcing positive behaviors, I learned and am continually learning what techniques I can use to best manage my classroom in the future to promote student
I am currently an English 160 student who is hoping to move on to the next course, which is English 161. I understand the requirements for English 161. It require students to explore a topic in some depth and conduct independent research related to that topic. Conducting research allows students to learn what it is like to participate in academic culture, posing questions about important issues and developing an argument in response to what others have said. It expected students to learn the most valuable skill in college, which is critical thinking. Students have to be able to read challenging readings. Although I still have problems with English, I think I’m qualified to move on.
In conclusion I feel that I have gained knowledge that can only be obtained through hands on experience in the classroom. With this experience I changed my assumption about classroom management techniques and have a totally new outlook which will only aid me as a teacher. This will be of great help to me going forward but I feel as a teacher you must be constantly open to learning and improving
I know that as I grow and learn as a teacher my theory on education will change and grow with me. I know that the best thing that I can bring to the table when it comes to being a teacher is the willingness to learn along with my students on what works best for us in our classroom, what is important to us when it comes to learning, and to change what needs to be change in order to have a positive learning environment for my student. The most important thing as a teacher I will bring with me into my classroom is the unwavering desire to help to guide, shape, and above all foster a love of learning in my
Writing is an important and useful way to communicate with people. Without an essential writing skill, people may have difficulty communicating with others. In Pace University, English Department focuses on improving students writing by adding a workshop class to improve students ' writing. Over the course of the semester, I have learned a better technique and tips from Professor Boylan, reading an essay from authors and class discussion. Writing had always been one of my weaknesses, but it was challenging to take that initial step past high school. When I am first taking English 120, I have decided to take all the help that are available to minimize grammar mistakes, better sentence structures, and better vocabularies usage. Reading an article or essay before every class improves my vocabulary usage, Doing discourse community essay shows me a way to express my feeling about being
My personal philosophy on teaching is to inspire my students to think and to be objective thinkers. Like life, classrooms are filled with incidents on a daily basis. It 's interesting, as an active participant, to actually experience these moments shared between teachers and students as relationships are built mostly based on personality. As professionals, it 's expected that emotions take the back seat in decision making, but humans think with their heart a lot. A teacher in my estimation is one of the most human
Not having these particular skills could result in some consequences in your life. So you should always take careful steps and know what you are supposed to do and what is best. The world would be in complete chaos if no one ever followed instructions. This is why rules and laws are made, so our world can run smoothly and become a better place. The same principles apply to the classroom and school. In order for the classroom to be a good learning
Respectful of them, their opinions, and their standpoints. I have witnessed first-hand how hard it is to agree with someone who shows no respect for you and vice versa. It happens everywhere, and I have learned that as a future teacher, that respect is vital. In order for my students to learn, and actively engage in my classes, I need to prove to them that I respect them as a person. I have seen that in class where some students have little to no respect for their peers. In addition, I have also experienced that. There was one instance where me and a few other girls were targeted for voicing our opinions on an issue. We were told by another student that we were wrong. It seemed that he refused to actually listen to us and let it settle with him. As a result of this, he got no cooperation from us. We had basically shut down. We felt vulnerable and refused to say anything for a little while being scared that he would make us feel belittled yet again. With that being said, I know now that it is not only important, but essential to show respect to anyone and everyone, and also that you receive it in
As I reflect on my experiences observing in three different classrooms over the last three months, I cannot express how much I have learned by being in the classroom. I began the Master of Science in Education last fall and previous to the practicum experience I had taken 8 classes. I read books, listened to the experiences of my classmates and instructors, reflected on my own education, and tried to imagine how this information was going to prepare me to face a classroom of elementary school students. While I learned theories and skills that should be known by any educator, these classes could not teach me what I most desired to know: what tangible steps could I take to correctly implement all of the correct ways of teaching.
Much like Benjamin Franklin believed, I feel that a person should take advantage of the time the person has in life with activities a person wants to do or needs to do. A person should not spend much time on activities the person does not want to do. Life is way too short to concern oneself with work or other activities one wants nothing to do with all the time. When possible, I try to forget about my responsibility and just let go of the ‘things’ that do not matter to me. I think a person should try to occupy oneself with something productive, worthwhile, or necessary at all times. Even though a person’s life is left up to a person to live, I cannot imagine thinking that I owe my time to society through working a job that I simply despise. I am a compassionate person, but I do not owe anyone anything regarding my time.
Writing a reflection and a summary of dozens of experiences is very challenging and demanding. I cannot count how many ups I had, yet I cannot deny the fact that I had some downs where I could transform them to ups. The year was full of challenges, excitement, fear and lessons. Each Wednesday I had mixed emotions. Every time I came to school I had the same fear and heartbreaks. In my reflection I am willing to compare between Adan at the beginning of the year and new Adan I became.
During this College Composition course, I came across numerous obstacles and educational involvements. Every factor of this course contributed to my overall learning experience. For starters, we often read out of our textbooks, “The Little Seagull Handbook” and “They Say I Say”. These books helped showcase proper writing techniques. In addition, we would have class discussions that everyone would participate in. This opened my eyes to different viewpoints that could influence my writing. I recall one class we had a debate over a topic and everyone had to choose a side to argue. Then when we wrote argument essays, even though they were on a different topic, it helped me view my topic in different ways. Lastly, the most helpful to my writing was peer review. We were told to read our paper out loud to our partner. Although personally I am quiet and dislike reading out loud, I found this very helpful. Instantly, my partner and I could find grammar mistakes that one may not pick up on while reading silently. Then we could also talk about other possible revisions for my paper. For every paper, we would have conferences with the professor. This was effective as well to have a professional giving corrections and ideas. When we would get back our graded rubrics on the assignments we completed, the instructor would leave comments to
Classroom management is a necessary component to every classroom. It includes creating a set of rules and clear expectations that all students follow. This helps unify the classroom for both the teacher and students allowing for a smooth, effective, and educational environment. When the students are aware of what is expected, they are motivated in order to attain the goals dispensed by the teacher. Some students are naturally motivated and want nothing more than to surpass goals for the sake of triumph and pleasing the teacher. Other students need extrinsic motivation in order for them to become engaged in
As stated earlier, I believe Classroom Management is the key to how learning can take place and students can feel safe participating. I hope to create an environment that is conducive to learning and involves all my students. I believe the most important part of classroom management is not the behavior problems but creating a good rapport with the students, encouraging them to succeed and setting high expectations for them. As well as using an engaging a curriculum, I believe you can create this environment and it will limit the behavior problems in your classroom from the
At the end of the day or beginning of the school day, I communicated what I did with Ms. P to plan out better activities or lesson plans to meet each individual’s needs.
To help students up the ladder, school indirectly teaches its students about respect. Although not found on the pages of any text book, learning lessons in respect can be very helpful. The idea of respect starts with teachers and often branches to the development of peer and self respect. Everyone has experienced a teacher that they couldn't stand and dreaded going to that class. It was times like that which challenged the respect that had begun to develop. In eight grade, my english teacher was one of the mose mean people I have ever met. I got a 0 on a quiz because I spelled one word wrong (it was not a spelling quiz). I hated going to her class, half the time, I just wanted to scream at her.
