In addition to medication and behavioral interventions, classroom interventions play a very important role in a child’s educational career. In fact, classroom organization is of utmost importance in that it is the cornerstone of the children’s learning experience. Classroom arrangements and implementations can affect how well a child performs in class. In his research, Carbone expresses that having the classroom set up into “centers” can be distracting and cause overstimulation, which the opposite of what is needed to help children engage in the lessons. Seating children in the classic row style gives a sense of structure and will help with attention and focus. The saying, “A tired child is a happy child” works well here. It is hard enough for children in general to sit still for long periods of time, it is even harder for children that suffer from ADHD. However, physical activity has been linked with increased productivity in school with children with ADHD (Brock 3). This is why physical education can be such as asset to students. Using its removal as a form of punishment has far more detrimental effects academically. “Teachers often require students with ADHD to make up these assignments during nonacademic classes, recess, gym time, or after school. This, unfortunately, does not allow the students the opportunity to engage in physical activities that provide them appropriate time for movement and give their minds a needed rest from academics” (Mulrine 16). Adding the use of productive exercise into the school routine and also for mental breaks can be highly beneficial. This is true especially during times of day where kids can become more sluggish, after lunch can be a great example. As Brock describes, “During the afternoon, when problem-solving skills tend to be especially poor, more active, non-academic activities can be scheduled” (2). While the numbers of the diagnosed are high, society has made great progress with strategies and interventions throughout the spectrum that the options today are near limitless. The use of physical activities in school and in the classrooms, have become a proven gamechanger, the success is in the students. Skill sets that both parents and teachers alike use inside and out of the classroom are showing positive improvement for everyone. By the same token, the implementation of the combination of both medications and behavioral therapies have shown such positive results, that the fusion of all the various interventions would lead to a child who no doubt see success. It is not just one thing or one individual, but a collaborative effort by all that makes this happen.
