Conflict is the state in which contradictory or opposing ideas and action of different entities bring an antagonistic state. Conflict is an evitable part of our life, every one of us has different opinions, ideas and some set of beliefs since we have our ways of looking at things and on how to perceive them through our thinking. This state brings us to find ourselves in some conflict of different types; this may involve some people, group of individual or a struggle that may arise in between ourselves. Consequently, a conflict has a significant influence in our lives hence it must be solved before escalating to some disasters. It occurs typically due to how people are different from one another, in life we have different personalities which in most cases result in incompatible choices and views. This is apparently natural occurrence which can have some benefits to us; it can help us to have a healthy personal growth and to develop a proper relationship to others since it can help us to know how best to adjust to some arising situations which usually arise from this conflict. This kind of conflict is psychological which involves one's thoughts, principles, emotions, and values. This type of conflict may come in different scales, from the simple one like deciding whether to have early lunch to the ones that can affect our major decisions like choosing our career path, (Homan et al., 2014). This kind of conflict can be quite difficult to handle since one can find it difficult to decipher inner feeling on the same issue at hand, this can lead to restless and some uneasiness that can cause depression to some people. In some situations like this, it is good to seek advice from other peoples whom you share your thoughts with to help you. This kind of conflict can be helpful as it will help one to a positive change in own interpersonal growth. 3. Intragroup conflict Intragroup conflict is a type of conflict that can arise among people within a team. It is mostly as a result of our incompatibilities and misunderstanding that can result from ourselves that can escalate to some issues. Conflict occurs in organizations whenever a difference of opinions exists. People disagree over many things including but not limited to, policies and procedures, the overall direction of the company, and distribution of rewards. Conflict theory are perspective in sociology psychology that accentuate the social, political, or material inequality of a social group, that analysis the broad socio-political system, or that weaken from structural functionalism and ideological conservatism. With conflict theory, you will see tensions, status, and power are unevenly distributed between groups in society, which these conflicts become the purpose of social change. Conflict theory usually arise due to competition and limited resource that is feed by domination and power, rather than consensus and conformity. This is seen a lot on macro level. As a social worker, you will see and use conflict theory throughout your professional.
Many people enjoy working or participating in a group or team, but when a group of people work together chances are that conflicts will occur. Hazleton describes conflict as the discrepancy between what is the perceived reality and what is seen as ideal (2007). “We enter into conflicts reluctantly, cautiously, angrily, nervously, confidently- and emerge from them battered, exhausted, sad, satisfied, triumphant. And still many of us underestimate or overlook the merits of conflict- the opportunity conflict offers every time it occurs” (Schilling, nd.). Conflict does not have to lead to a hostile environment or to broken relationships. Conflict if resolved effectively can lead to a positive experience for everyone involved. First, there must be an understanding of the reasons why conflicts occur. The conflict must be approached with an open mind. Using specific strategies can lead to a successful resolution for all parties involved. The Thomas-Kilmann Conflict Mode Instrument states “there are five general approaches to dealing with conflict. The five approaches are avoidance, accommodation, competition, compromise, and collaboration. Conflict resolution is situational and no one approach provides the best or right approach for all circumstances” (Thomas, 2000).
Differences within the team are the major reason for conflict. This stems from differences in opinion, attitude, beliefs, as well as cultural back grounds and social factors. The Conflict can be positive which is functional and supports or benefits the organization or a person’s main objectives (Reaching Out, 1997). Conflict is viewed as positive when the conflict results in increased involvement form the group, increased cohesion, and positive innovation and creativity. Conflict tends to be positive as well when it leads to better decisions, and solutions to long-term problems.
However, with this comes the fact that, due to human nature, conflict is bound to arise, thus it is important for people to know how to deal with it in an effective manner. Conflict is seen as a disagreement through which the parties involved perceive a threat to their needs, interests or concerns. Conflict is categorized into two headings; Functional and Dysfunctional Conflict. Functional Conflict is a non-aggressive form which stimulates creativity and allows ideas to flow whereas Dysfunctional Conflict is an aggressive type of disagreement where people refuse to work it out. We each possess unique ideas, opinions, beliefs, and feelings about specific situations in life. This uniqueness is a large part of what makes us human. Because we all have our own individual way of looking at things, we each have a different viewpoint on what is proper or improper. With all that variation in society conflict is inevitable! Conflict is antagonistic in nature and we all must find ways to work through conflict issues both at work and at home. This paper describes different types of conflict, the influences I personally had in learning to deal with those conflicts, some of the conflicts that I commonly experience, how I go about dealing with those conflicts, and how conflict affects me on a personal level.
