Wood types differ considerably in properties such as color, density, and hardness, making timber a resource that is valuable in a wide variety of contexts. Each of the samples of commonly used woods shown here has distinctive characteristics. Mahogany is a tropical tree prized for its heavy, strong, easily worked wood. Hickory is a tough, hard wood used for tool handles, furniture, and smoke wood for meat. Instrument makers favor the strong, richly colored wood of the cherry tree. Yew is strong, fine-grained wood used for cabinetmaking and archery bows. Like mahogany, the wood of the iroko is resistant to both rot and insects and bears the "interlocked" grain of many tropical trees. Oak is one of the world's most durable woods. It is used in barrel-making, veneers, and flooring....
Shortleaf Pine (Pinus echinata) and Pulp and Lumber Production. Introduction Shortleaf pine (Pinus echinata) is commercially one of the four most important conifers in the southeastern United States. In fact, shortleaf pine has the widest range of all southern pines, spreading from Florida to New Jersey and from North Carolina to Oklahoma. Sidney Investments, a firm based in Dallas, Texas, is considering the purchase of a 360-acre parcel of forested land located in the Quachita Mountains of eastern Oklahoma. This land has been under timber production through one rotation to this point.
The people of the Eastern Woodlands made many tools to help them in their everyday lives. They made spears, weirs, nets, bows and arrows, lances, knives, taps, snares and deadfall for hunting. Most of those tools were made of wood or bark and other forest material. Arrowheads were made from chert, or flint, from sedimentary rocks. They were shaped like isosceles triangles, the smallest arrows were used for hunting birds, the bigger ones were to spear bears or deer. Flint knives were often oval, or teardrop shaped. For fishing they made spears, weirs, and nets. They also made canoes from hollowed-out trees to help with fishing in the lakes and streams. Some other tools they made were axes made of stone to strip bark, clear fields and removing fat from hides. Axes

Written by Edward Ward and published in 1706, the Wooden World Dissected explains the inside of a ship that most people do not get to see. The ship and the people in it are supposed to represent the makeup of the Royal Navy. He begins the book with a letter explaining how he wants to inform the reader with more information than they could get from looking at a picture. This leads the reader to believe that he is going to write a book full of dull facts, however he writes a satire. He describes everyone, from the Sea Captain all the way down the ladder to the common sailor. He uses comparisons, descriptions of relationships and character, and his own voice to paint a picture of a life aboard a ship in the mid fifteenth to early sixteenth century.
“Be more concerned with you character than your reputation, because your character is what you really are, while your reputation is merely what others think you are.” These words of John Wooden are just a few out of many wise quotes millions of people, not just athletes, are inspired by today and likely will continue to be inspired by for a very long time. A molecular miracle occurs every time the Wood Frog faces freezing temperatures. At the point where human skin would freeze and the cells collapse resulting in frostbite, this frog’s system uses colligative properties to secrete sugars which support the frog’s cells and keep them from collapsing.
I will be discussing artwork using the Barthes Rhetoric of Image. I will discuss how it uses linguistic message, non-coded iconic, coded iconic, and idiolect. The image I am using is “American Gothic” by Grant Wood on page 538. I hope this painting shows the reflection of hope in the people despite the Depression.
In 1930, an artist by the name of Grant Wood painted American Gothic. The painting consists of a man and woman who happened to be brother and sister in real life. Two modes of analysis are used to compose this art analysis. A biographical analysis is used because the artist, Grant Wood, grew up and lived on a farm for most of his life in Iowa. By painting the background to look as if it were set on a farm, Grant Wood references the setting back to the time of living on the farm in Iowa. A contextual analysis was also used to write this analysis. In 1930, the Great Depression was occurring and people in the United States were suffering greatly. The Great Depression made people’s lives stressful and unhappy. The painting depicts a woman and man with very grim faces which can be inferred to the hard times people faced during the Great Depression.
Forests are basically a complex mix of living things such as animals, trees, shrubs, plants, fungi, and many more, as they cover about 40% of Canada’s land. As forests play an important role in this complex community, as we need those to survive to build shelter, food for animals, and most important is fresh air.

Looking back, I remember running through the long lush grass pretending we were at battle andtrying to take cover. I would always find myself behind the old oak tree in our back yard. This was my favorite spot. The thick trunk, like a bodyguard, protected me from the imaginary bullets that flew towards my body. I would lean against the hard bark and for some reason it was comforting to have something sturdy to lean on. It was dark brown, and every now and then a spider would nestle between the pieces of bark. Sometimes I would touch the tree to peek around the corner and my fingers would be sticky. I could never quite figure out why that was, but, nevertheless, I had the hardest time getting it off, a constant reminder of my tree.
There are many different types of wood that are used to make the body of a guitar, a few different types include basswood, maple, and walnut wood.
