3. What is the difference between a'smart' and a'smart'? There are many sources of evil in the world, ranging from dictators to the common man. Many stories of fiction emphasize that trait of evil, making it seem more intense and dangerous. An example of this would be Cinder by Marissa Meyer, with the examples of Cinder's stepmom, Linh Adri, and stepsister, Linh Pearl, both of them trapping Cinder in a cycle of evil and hatred with excessive control along with unnecessary rude comments and mistreatment. The first type of evil portrayed in Cinder is the collection of unhelpful and damaging comments made by Linh Adri and Linh Pearl on Cinder. Cinder faces a continuous stream of rude comments, bickering with her stepsister and arguments with her stepmother. Linh Adri treats Cinder as inhuman, mentioning phrases such as only humans can cry, and non-humans cannot show emotion, and everything that Cinder does is cyborg programming. Additionally, Pearl and Adri blame Cinder for Peony's death, which was not the latter's fault. Moreover, Pearl criticizes Cinder in front of Prince Kai on her characteristics and, in general, existence. Therefore, with the …show more content…
A main example of this would be the abuse of the Cyborg Protection Act, a law passed in the Eastern Commonwealth, by Cinder's stepmother. To explain, Adri makes Cinder come back from visiting Peony (although Adri didn't know that Cinder was visiting Peony) by exploiting the Cyborg Protection Act. Another significant example of excessive control includes Adri restricting Cinder from attending the ball at all, instead making her fix hovers, along with dismantling Cinder's main friend/android Iko without the latter's permission and taking the latter's foot away. Thus proven, with the exercise of unnecessary control to only ruin the life of Cinder, Adri is an embodiment of evil, exposing the bad traits of the world in the
A longing for revenge can hold people captive in their own minds, influencing thoughts and speech. The Tempest, by William Shakespeare, is a play that follows the story of Prospero, the rightful Duke of Milan, after he is overpowered by his own brother and left to die with his daughter in a cramped sailboat. He seeks vengeance against many; however, he is not alone in his pursuit of revenge. His servant, Caliban, yearns for revenge toward Prospero for commanding him to be his slave. As Prospero seeks revenge on Antonio and Caliban, he does not realize Caliban’s own craving for revenge against him.
The statement peace is better than revenge is perfect for the book the roll of thunder Hear me cry. There are so many times while you are reading this novel that things could of went completely different if they would of gotten revenge but instead did the right thing to solve problems. Page 116 of Roll Of Thunder Hear Me Cry states “when the words had been spoken i turned and fled crying into the back of the wagon, no day in my life had ever been as cruel as this one”. This quote represents mamas effort to solve problems. By making Cassie apologize even when she wasn't the main problem caused more peace than getting revenge.
In the 1930’s, turmoil has erupted in Maycomb, Alabama all because the young lady Mayella Ewell has accused African-American Tom Robinson of raping and sexually assaulting her. Yet, Mayella Ewell has no power because of her race, class, and gender. At the time, Maycomb, Alabama was at the peak of segregation against African-Americans. Mayella Ewell may be white, but that does not mean her class, gender, nor her race give her power.
may the God of vengeance now yield me His places to punish the wicked,” (Dumas 131).
In the novella of The Crucible by Arthur Miller vengeance is walking Salem in causing several conflicts throughout the Salem village. Many of the conflicts are due with getting back at one another with the need for revenge. “We are what we always were in Salem, but now the little crazy children are jangling keys of the kingdom, and common vengeance writes the law!” (Miller 81). This quote is trying to prove the point the proctor has a very good understanding of what is happening in how the little girls are rebelling and acting out. They are accusing several women of being witches. “Why, Abigail Williams charge her” (Miller 77). The quote is trying to show how many of the girls are calling out the wives in the Salem village.
Greed also influenced many of the decisions that characters have formulated throughout the book. For example, Jerry Cruncher chose to become a grave digger for the profit gotten from it, which caused many problems in his family. When Jerry Jr. follows his father into the night he witnesses his father committing a horrifying crime that he, “Knew very well knew what it would be; but, when he saw it, and saw his honoured parent about to wrench it open, he was so frightened, being new to the sight, that he made off again, and never stopped until he had run a mile or more” (Dickens 184). Had Jerry not been so acquisitive, he would most likely have chosen not to go into that profession. This would prevent Jerry Jr. from being scarred by his father's bad decisions and possibly decrease Jerry’s drinking due to guilt he has after grave digging. Additionally, when C.J. Stryver proposes to Lucie, his motive for it blossoms from greed. While explaining to Carton why he has decided to do this, Stryver admits, "I don't care about fortune: she is a charming creature, and I have made up my mind to please myself: on the whole, I think I can afford to please myself. She will have in me a man already pretty well off, and a
“Love goes by haps; Some Cupid kills with arrows, some with traps” (Shakespeare pg. 45). One of Shakespeare’s most famous plays is Much Ado About Nothing and it specifically shows the tragic flaws of each and every character throughout the story. One character that will be mainly focused on that’s the most tragically flawed, is Claudio because he’s passionate about his love for Hero and how he’s easily manipulated.
Light and Dark Light and dark is an everyday aspect of life, The Scarlet Letter really reveals how light and dark everyone can be. Though it was sometimes hard to read, the book made me think more about the good and evil in everyone. Throughout the novel, Hawthorne uses the symbols of light and dark to depict good and evil among the characters Hester Prynne, Arthur Dimmesdale, and Roger Chillingworth. Hester Prynne is considered a light and dark character in the book; many of the things that are noticeable about Hester in the book involve the sunshine. Hester explains this to Pearl in the book “Thou must gather thine own sunshine I have none to give thee” (Hawthorne 95).
Our perspective on life can have a significant impact on our life. Depending on how you were raised it can impact your perspective on life very differently than others. For example if you were raised in a home of poverty or drug abuse you are use too that lifestyle when you're young. It wouldn't be till your older you would realize it is not a normal way of life. It shapes our life. In the novel the Glass Castle Jeanette is a perfect example of how your perspective changes throughout life as you experience life in addition to maturing. Her change in life had an unbelievable impact on her life that made her a well round mature adult despite her upbringing in poverty.
Mania is an excessive enthusiasm or desire, typically with a negative intention, and that is what Roger Chillingworth suffered from. Throughout the novel, he goes out of his way to make the life of Arthur Dimmesdale awful. He tortures Dimmesdale from the inside out, psychologically outsmarting him at every turn. Chillingworth claims that Hester is the reason he has acted so awfully, but it is not common for others to agree with him. In The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne, Chillingworth’s deep desire for revenge is understandable, as he was a decent person before he found out about the affair, but then turned into a maniac in his quest to exact revenge on Dimmesdale.
Villains come in all forms of malevolence throughout all types of literature. They help to drive the plot of the story and influence the themes and purposes as desired by the author. In The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne, the character assigned the appellation of Roger Chillingworth is the main antagonist. He is first seen attending the public humiliation of Hester Prynne, who is the protagonist of the book. Chillingworth is established as a physician whom Hester had previously cheated on. Throughout the novel, Chillingworth is seen as being controlling over Arthur Dimmesdale, who testifies to one of the book’s main themes of guilt. Nathaniel Hawthorne’s historical drama The Scarlet Letter renders Roger Chillingworth as the villain who
Throughout the book The Good Earth written by Pearl S. Buck, it shows the evolvement of the main character Wang Lung and how owning or not owning land in the 1920s is affected by peasants in China. It also shows the struggles of a peasant’s life, going through poverty and what happens when wealth enters their lives. Owning land as a peasant is an important aspect of their living style, simply because they live off of what they are able to grow that season. They depend on their land for resources to provide for themselves and family; and also selling crops or trading crops in order to make money. The peasants of China exemplify how important their crops and land are to them throughout the whole book by showing love and compassion for them; but,
The Glass Castle is a novel that follows the life of a dysfunctional family from the perspective of Jeannette Walls, the third child of the Walls family. Throughout the stories, the readers see all the hardships the children face, as their lunatic parents do what they think is right. After reading the book, it seems to agree the quote “Parents can only give good advice or put them on the right paths, but the final forming of a person's character lies in their own hands” by Anne Frank.
Written by Arthur Miller, the Crucible is a reading filled with many significant and important quotes. One excerpt expresses the hidden dishonesty and deceit within the Puritan society. It says, “There are wheels within wheels in this village, and fires within fires” (Miller 28). At this part in the play, Mrs. Ann Putnam is having a dispute with Rebecca Nurse over the reasoning for her many miscarriages. Unlike Mrs. Putnam, Rebecca has been granted with plenty of children making her quite envious over Rebecca. She tries to suggest that maybe the Devil helped her have so many kids. This quote is therefore used by Mrs. Putnam to express her religious knowledge in order to help explain about this mysterious and puzzling event that has been
What is identity? How are different parts of our identities connected to each other? How much control do humans really have over their identities? Shakespeare’s Macbeth describes identity as a person’s actions, status, knowledge, thoughts, feelings, motivations, fate, how he or she sees himself or herself, and how others see him or her. Set in 16th-century Scotland, the play tells the story of the nobleman Macbeth and his wife Lady Macbeth. Macbeth is first portrayed as a war hero who, upon returning home, receives his prophecy from the witches. He learns that he will be the king of Scotland, but the only way this is possible is if he murders the king who was ruling at the time, Duncan. After Macbeth and Lady Macbeth commit this murder, guilt
