The movie Cider House Rules involves many different characters that one can focus on, but the main character I want to focus on is Homer Wells, who is also the main character of the film. Now every character goes through many different situations and are faced with different obstacles that they must over come. Dr. Larch has to over come the ability to realize he is human, and how the board wants to replace him. Mr. Rose has to over come non-diligent workers, and conflicts with his daughter and keep a calm, flowing working environment. Candy Kendall has to deal with her husband Wally Worthington being away fighting for the United States in World War II. On the other side Wally has to deal with the loss of ability to use his legs and being paralyzed in a wheel chair. But, none of these are more compelling or can be looked at in so many ways as Homer's.
Now from the time Dr. Larch said, "Hence forth you be known as Homer Wells", he seemed to be the type of person to say, "What you see, is what you get". Now I believe this cause from early childhood, to adolescence, to early adulthood there was never anything to flashy about him. He was dressed in plain old school baby pajamas with legs and feet on them. When he was growing up he was wearing plains shirts, and a pair of slacks. This form of appearance remained constant through the rest of the movie in reality. The main colors that Homer wore were grays, blacks, and browns. Showin...
David is the author of this auto-biography. He lived the perfect life up until his mother took up drinking at the age of four. Dave enjoyed school and had a wide imagination. Although each character is very different in their own way, O 'Connors uses each character to show a sense of kindness, struggle, and moment of clarity. Sometimes these characters are bizarre and eccentric, but each in their own individual way. A Good Man is Hard

The Clutter family portrayed the American dream for all people in Holcomb, as they are described to be almost the perfect family, or dream family. The Clutters are a strong family of 6 with a well liked father and mother, and successful children. Their family is well known throughout the village of Holcomb and are the most idolized. Mr.Clutter represents what every man should be, as he was “the community’s most widely known citizen” and
...and displayed uncharacteristic actions. In doing so, they distanced themselves farther away from their goals, resulting in the failure of their pursuits. Homer Simpson ultimately leads himself into an unstable mental state and has seemingly become a lifeless figure. Faye Greener becomes widely known for her sexual appearance and intimacy, attracting lust instead of her acting talents. In general, many of the citizens of Hollywood are in similar situations. The end of the novel portrays a gathering of people disappointed with their own pursuits. They are waiting to see actors of a recent film. They look to the actors, their source for inspiration, to fulfill their need for excitement since they can no longer build excitement themselves. The slightest tension sets off the crowd, who are frustrated and unsatisfied with how their lives have come to be, and chaos arises.
Consider McMurphy and Mr. Keating, both characters are very similar in a multitude of ways. Neither of them is in charge as they are both under their respective antagonist, either being Nurse Ratched or Principle Nolan. However throughout the progression of each plot, they both teach and inspire either the patients or the students to become individuals. McMurphy gave the patients the ability to seize back the power from Nurse Ratched through showing them the way how, and teaching the patients that they are their own person and have their own rights. Mr. Keating teaches the students how to be outside the box, as shown when in class he strays from the regular methods of teaching and shows the students a truly out-of-the-box concept about life, “Carpe Diem.” Towards the final moments of the plot, both characters achieve a full commitment to their cause that eventuates in self-sacrifice. McMurphy is lobotomized and Mr. Keating is fired from Welton Academy. However similarly in both plots, after both characters sacrifices themselves they pass on what they have learned and allowed others to beat their struggle for independence. Chief leaves the institution and the students stand up against Principle Nolan with what they believe in. Weir and Kesey use these characters to inspire and support those who struggle for independence and use their characterization as a technique to do so.
Neddy and Charlie caused their own failure because of the choices they made. Both characters shared similar lifestyles and problems but were presented differently in each story. Also conclude that there is no definite solution to their problems, leaving a sense of ambiguity. This gives the story’s a human feeling, causing the reader to feel compelled towards the characters. Both characters endured through a sequence of misfortune to convey a similar message; the present depends on your past actions.
For both Andrew and Nina, this is shown in multiple ways, one being what they choose to wear. They both start out in white outfits, practice in white, yet as either character starts to lose their innocence and pull away from the original constructed reality, their white outfits change as well. Andrew wears a flannel covering up his white t-shirt when he challenges his extended family’s views on his career. He starts wearing dark gray or black t-shirts like his mentor as he descends deeper into self-doubt and his manic behavior. This is similar for Nina as well. Her white outfits also become increasingly darker throughout the film. After her first act of defiance towards her mother, Nina’s wardrobe changes significantly to show her narrative
The next character that intrigued me was Brian, the quote-on-quote "nerd." A nerd is a person that is academically inclined and is known for striving to get good grades and being socially inept. His confession of why he was in Saturday detention seemed a lot more serious then it actually turned out to be. He was in Saturday detention because he had a gun in his locker. He bought the gun to kill because he had intent on killing himself.
The most influential person in Sonny’s life has to be Elsie, his mother. Elsie continuously influences Sonny to become more than a coal miner when he grows up, because she believes that Sonny has more potential. People who should be role models to Sonny overlook him because of his failure to succeed in academics and athletics. Fortunately, Elsie pushes him to continue trying because she has hope for Sonny’s future out of Coalwood, West Virginia. Sonny has a passion for building rockets that could someday, go into space. So far in Rocket Boys, Sonny has failed to be successful for even lifting his rockets over three feet high. Homer Sr. does not believe in Sonny, and instead, puts all of his effort toward Jimmy, Sonny’s older brother, because
Mack, the leader of a reckless and erratic gang, through collaboration, brings the boys together into a sense of friendship and community; in The Bean Trees, Kingsolver's strong willed, group of women, develop into a similar relationship. Throughout Cannery Row, the group’s individual responsibilities, for example, Eddie’s part-time job, Gay’s “magic” in mechanics, and Mack’s innovative personality, helps them survive by the help of one another, and adds success to their ambitions, like giving Doc a party. They independently work toward one goal, but in unison. The devotion, as well as teamwork to “give him (Doc) one hell of a party,” becomes the numbe...
As his time in Babylon continues, his costume becomes more patterned and gold, with highly jeweled borders and jewelry. His robes continue to be ornate and red becomes his signature color, with influences that seem of more modern Middle-eastern. In the cold mountains of India, Alexander continues his red color scheme with a fur-lined robe with a richly feathered neck. He wears a paler chlamys around his neck, like a modern scarf. When in India, he appears to be wearing a sheer, kalasiris-type garment with a large, geometrically patterned
The idea of building a rocket did not just simply come to Homer. The idea was planted in his head as he watched Sputnik pass over his little coal mining town. There were many moments that helped to cultivate this idea, but this moment alone is what planted the seed in the fertile soil of Homer’s mind. While others saw Sputnik as only another Russian war machine, Homer saw something more inspiring. He saw humanity's future among the stars. With that one fleeting glance of a satellite over three hundred miles away, he knew that he intended to be part of that future. Granted, this is a lot of inference to take away from a shot that only spanned a few seconds. So, what technique did the director use to feed us so much wonder and hope in such a
In my book the Perks of Being a Wallflower, there are four main characters. Charlie, Sam, Patrick, and Mary Elizabeth. The way that the Author describes charlie is kind of like a sensitive young man who is trying to figure out what to do with his life. He doesn’t really have any friends because last year, his best friend died and his Aunt died in a car crash. Sam seems like a really energetic young woman who loves hanging out with her friends and listening to classic rock. I think that the Author made her character perfectly because every word she says, seems like she is happy on the outside but a little lost in the inside. Patrick is a jokester who is depressed sometimes because he is gay and his boyfriend has to pretend that he doesn’t love him. He is Sam’s step brother and they seem to be great friends. He loves music as well. Mary Elizabeth is a mix between a buddhist, and a punk. She shaved half of her head and on the weekends she has a show called “punk rocky” which is supposed to be a re-make of this show called the rocky horror picture show. She dates Charlie for a while but is controlling, and Charlie doesn’t really like her because he likes sam, a lot.
