Gender roles have always led to women being treated unfairly compared to men due to machismo, the belief that men are required to display their social dominance. Therefore, this book addresses this problem. In Chronicle of a Death Foretold, Gabriel Garcia Marquez uses the theme of gender to show how machismo led to the murder of Santiago Nasar and the unfair treatment of women by using the Vicario Brothers and Bayardo as examples.
First, the setting of this story was a small village in South America in which many people withhold the belief of machismo. An example of this comes from the Vicario Brothers. The Vicario Brothers wanted to reclaim their family’s honor by killing the man that took Angela Vicario’s virginity. While murder was not in their agenda, they must go through with it to fulfill the idea of machismo. Once a man’s masculinity is put at risk, he must do anything possible to regain it. The court and many others even found him innocent due to them defending their honor. They care more about letting the men show off their masculinity than following the laws. “Before God and before men, it was a matter of honor” (29) was what Pablo Vicario said to defend their purpose behind the murder. He stated that many other men would agree with him as well, since it was more important for a man to assert his dominance and regain his honor than to think of a cowardly, peaceful solution. The brothers even tried to prevent this by making their murder plot public in hopes that someone would stop them.
