The novella Chronicle of a Death Foretold, based on a true story from the early 1950s, tells the tale of Santiago, a young man falsely accused of taking the virginity of Angela, a woman who was to be wed to another, and the events that unfolded leading up to his gruesome murder. Though no one believed the dishonor for which Santiago was blamed for bringing to Angela, it was to greater misbelief that no one did anything to prevent his wrongful death at the hands of the Vicario twins. Through the personalities and narrative of Angela and her fiance Bayardo, the author introduces the foundation and builds the understanding of the Columbian sense of the machismo and the marianismo. Machismo is defined as strong or aggressive masculine pride, where men are allowed to have different partners. Women, on the other hand, are only allowed to have one partner and it cannot be outside of the marriage; it’s also a way for men to express their dominance over the women. For example, it was said that “No one would of thought, nor did anyone say, that Angela Vicario wasn’t a virgin… ‘The only thing I [Angela Vicario] prayed to God for was to give me the courage to kill myself’’’ (Marquez 37). This clearly tells the reader that Angela had failed to fulfill her culture 's expectation, because “no one” would 've thought that she “wasn’t a virgin” and now she is living in fear, similar to living beside a bomb, because you have no idea when the bomb is going to explode. She tried to pray for “courage” in order to kill herself because she knew when her family find out about the truth, either she or the man who took her virginity would end up dead. On the other hand, it was said that “...Bayardo San Roman was going to marry whomever he chose...‘love can be learned too.’”(Marquez 34). First, Columbians are known to be the most devoted to Catholicism of all of the Latin American Nations, which informs the reader about the importance of religion in their culture. The Catholic religion is all about the honor and has a belief that women’s virginity should be kept preserved until marriage. Unfortunately, Angela wasn’t faithful in following her religion and in turn brought shame on the entire Vicario family. Since the whole town was very religious, the Vicario brothers were pressured by society to take up the responsibility to kill the man who had dishonored their sister and the family. It was stated by the Vicario brothers, “‘We killed him openly,’ Pedro Vicario said, ‘but we’re innocent.’ ‘Perhaps before God,’ said Father Amador. ‘Before God and before men,’ Pablo said. ‘It was a matter of honor’’’ (Marquez 49). This quote connects to their religious beliefs, because they’ve “killed” someone in the public, yet they are still claiming that they are “innocent”, which tells the reader that the Vicario brothers were very religious, as stated that it was a “matter of honor”, they were confident that they’ve done the right move both “before God and before men”. Furthermore, the Vicario brothers were later put jail, and even during that time they felt no shame in killing someone in public as stated “At

On going into the long tent, Salvador felt like he’d entered the web of a spider, the old woman was eyeing him so deliberately” (360). Doña Guadalupe is a very protective woman, which is extremely speculative when it comes to her children, this is especially true when it comes to boys, because she has not gone this far only for all of her hard work to be ruined by a no good boy. This shows how protective she is, she loves her family, and especially her kids so much that they themselves must pass her test before being able to pass on to her children. “The newborns were moving, squirming, reaching out for life. It was truly a sign from God” (58). Doña Guadalupe is also a very devout and faithful person. She sees God in everything and in everyone and by that fact, what she sees and who she sees is true, and she tries to be a model of clairvoyance for the family. “Doña Guadalupe put the baby’s little feet in a bowel of warm water, and the child clinging to his mother. He never cried, listening to her heartbeat, the same music that he’d heard from inside the womb” (57). In several cultures, women are seen as archetypes more than men. The proposition of women are instantly idealized and glorified and instantaneously ignore the true complexity of a woman. Countless of these superficial images can be seen across various cultures where the societies within these cultures define what it means to be a female and what type of behavior is and isn’t acceptable within those parameters. The persistent restatement of these stories throughout these generations reinforces the gender system. Women who step out of the norm in these societies are then held punishable for their actions. Alicia Gaspar de Alba pinpoints the three archetypal roles that are given to the women in the Mexican and Chicana cultures. These are, “the mother, the virgin, and the whore.”) (51). These ideologies preserve that all women are determined by these social roles. These roles can easily become an unsustainable way to coexist, as in the image of the “Virgin Mother,” can be seen as opposites with the whore. This demands a division of the perpetual binary. Due to this, women must continually strive to mold themselves to uphold standards that may seem impossible, which then leads into the suppression of their sexuality.
When I first read Chronicle of a Death Foretold, I did not pay close attention to the deflating of authority with the characters Poncio Vicario, Colonel Aponte, and Father Amador. After listening to the presentations, everything made more sense. The true depth of the Vicario brothers’ threat to kill Santiago fails to be recognized by those in authority. The most respected official of the town, Colonel Aponte, does little to prevent the murder and fails to uphold the honor he has been charged with protecting. Instead of letting Santiago Nasar know about the murder plot against him, the Colonel goes back to his game of dominos at the social club. In addition “Colonel Lazaro Aponte, who had seen and caused so many repressive massacres, becomes a vegetarian as well as a spiritualist” (Garcia Márquez 6). The punishment for his neglect results in him eating liver for breakfast.
In the story Chronicle of a Death Foretold, Gabriel Garcia Marquez portrays how the bystander effect impacts the people around Santiago Nasar to act submissively revealing how people do not want to help others in difficult situations, unless it directly affects them. Marquez informs readers how individuals only see the different ways for personal gain, thereby not having “time” to help others in need. As Santiago Nasar nears his death, many of those who are informed of it do nothing to save his life, as they all rely on others to help rather than taking matters into their own hands and stepping up. Ignorance by specific townspeople, like Angela Vicario, Lazaro Aponte, Clotilde Armenta, and even a friend, Cristo Bedoya. Each person’s ignorance caused them to fail in helping a fellow citizen to their small town while some did not take enough initiative in preventing the murder.
“No one would have thought, nor did anyone say, that Angela Vicario wasn’t a virgin. She hadn’t known any previous fiancé and she’d grown up along with her sisters under the rigor of a mother of iron. Even when it was less than two months before she would be married, Pura Vicario wouldn’t let her go out alone with Bayardo San Roman to see the house where they were going to live, but she and the blind father accompanied her to watch over her honor.”
In The Chronicle of a Death Foretold, religion acts as a foremost determinant of the meaning of Santiago’s murder and parallels biblical passages. Gabriel García Márquez employs religious symbolism throughout his novella which alludes to Christ, his familiars, and his death on the cross. There are many representations throughout the novella that portray these biblical references, such as the murder of Santiago, the Divine Face, the cock’s crowing and the characters, Bayardo San Roman, Maria Cervantes, Divina Flor, and the Vicario children.

Garcia Marquez presents Maria Cervantes as highly respected and a powerful woman through the use religious allusions or references when developing Maria Cervantes. In the beginning of the story the narrator says that he was sitting “in the apostolic lap of Maria Alejandrina Cervantes” (5). By referring to Maria Cervantes’s lap as apostolic Garcia Marquez creates situational irony. The apostles were the disciples of Jesus Christ so by giving Maria apostolic qualities creates irony mainly because Maria Cervantes’s profession is more than often condemned by religion. By having the narrator on Maria Cervantes’s lap like a child the author creates the presence of dominance with Maria Cervantes because she shaped the lives of the men in the town. Another religious allusion is Maria Alejandrina Cervantes’s name. Her first name Maria is a reference to the Virgin Mary which creates more irony given Maria’s career. Catholicism glorifies and represents mothers as the main foundation of the family through the example of the passive and unconditional loving Mary, the mother of Jesus Crist. This idea of the mother as unconditional lover beings has been passed on and reproduced in the Chicana/o community. Gil Cuadros and Reyna Grande through their autobiographical work testify against this predominate idea of the mothers being caring and loving persons. Even though most mothers fall into the norm of a normal mother, normality is subjective, therefore Cuadros and Grande’s work represent the complexities of reality. Grande’s The Distance Between Us and Cuadro’s City of God are autobiographical narratives that incorporate reality as a form of testimonial of existence, an act of healing and resilience. Chronicle of a Death Foretold makes the reader consider whether fate controls our lives more than we think. Fate is an important theme in this novel because it cannot be changed. Marquez believes that even if you know your fate, you cannot change the outcome. Marquez shows that people can not alter their fate through the plight of the characters Santiago Nasar, Angela Vicario and the twin brothers.
In this Novel there are many themes such as: Honor, Authority figures failing, Unchangeable fates and Society lacking morale, Revenge, the supernatural and religion. For example, all the towns’ people and everyone know the Santiago is going to be murdered, yet no one really knows for what reason. Later we find Pablo and Pedro the twin brothers are back home with their mom. The whole family fundamentally puts Angela on trial asking her if she is a virgin or not because she confessed she did not bleed on the wedding night when with San Ramon. Angela said she lost her virginity to Santiago right after the family specifically the twins knew they had to “Defend her honor” by killing him which they did. “THE LAWYER STOOD BY THE THESIS OF homicide in legitimate defense of honour, which was upheld by the court in good faith, and the twins declared at the end of the trial that they would have done it again a thousand times over for the same reason. It was they who gave a hint of the direction the defense would take as soon as they surrendered to their church a few minutes after the crime. They burst panting into the parish house, closely pursued by a group of roused-up Arabs, and they laid the knives, with clean blades, on Father Amador 's desk. Santiago Nasar is going to die. There is no doubt, no questioning, no second-guessing this reality in writer Gabriel Garcia Marquez's book, Chronicle of a Death Foretold. Set in a small Colombian town during the early 50s, Santiago Nasar is a young and rich man destined to die at the hands of the Vicario brothers for deflowering their sister, Angela Vicario, of her virginity. To restore honor to their family name, the two brothers plot to kill the accused protagonist of the alleged crime. However, while Santiago remains in the dark to his impending demise, the rest of the town, aware of the murder plot, does nothing to prevent it. In the wake of the murder, the townspeople desperately want to believe that Santiago Nasar was ill fated to die in order to evade the moral guilt of having killed an innocent man in their ritualized society.

This means they can’t pick anyone they want to marry, the family does. Most Latin American families want their lady to marry a wealthy man. They know that wealthy man is aggressive, so Angela or her sisters would be perfect since they are raised to deal with harsh situations. So when Angela Vicario is told by her parents that she must marry Bayardo San Román, a wealthy and somewhat mysterious stranger who knows from the instant he sees Angela, that she is the woman he must have. She has no choice but to consent, particularly since her family is of modest means.
