Christina Perri was born in 1986 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She moved to L.A. to pursue her music career when she was twenty-one years old. She has been married only once, and divorced after less than two years later. Perri career took off when a song from her debut album was featured in a ballad on “So you think you can dance?” Her song “A Thousand Years” recorded for the popular film “Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn- Part 1” The song sold four million copies and was one of the most popular songs for weddings, when it was released in 2011. “A Thousand Years” falls under the genre pop. But what is pop? By true definition pop simple means popular. Which makes people pose the question, who decided a song will be popular? The best way to make …show more content…
“A Thousand Years” would specifically go under the romantic melody category, which style of music became remarkably known in the nineteenth and twentieth century. “They provide lush sequences of tones that are easily recalled and evoke emotional impact.” (Janaro &Altshuler, 143) In music, silence is just as important as the melody. It is the empty space within the music that builds up the drama in the song. “A Thousand Years” is a song that brings out a lot of emotions for me. The first time I heard the song, I had just given birth to my first born. I would sing it to her every night as I rocked her to sleep. The soft romantic melody and the silent pauses would bring tears to my eyes. Because this song had those two musical components, I choose to discuss it. However, I was also inspired to use this song after listening to Claude Debussy’s “Clair de Lune” and Beethoven’s “Moonlight Sonata: Movement 1.” Both pieces are examples of Impressionism music. Impressionism music focuses on three characteristics such as tone color, atmosphere, and fluidly. When I listen to these two songs and compared it to “A Thousand Years,” I could hear a lot of these same characteristic being used. (Barlar,
Christine De Pizan’s work in The Book of The City of Ladies pioneers a new genre of feminist literature that exposes a time period from the perspective of its female population. Due to this, De Pizan justifiably earns the title of a revolutionary author. However, to say that De Pizan revolutionized the conditions of women in the medieval ages and onward is an overstatement. In her book, De Pizan critiques sexist arguments in order to defend women against misogyny. The change that De Pizan presented in medieval culture was gradual because she was attempting to amend people’s perspectives on women rather than offer any institutional rectifications. She worked to establish that women can be just as mighty as men, and thus, they are not innately inferior. However, her goal was not to ensure that women have equal access to exercise and pursue their virtuous roles. Therefore, if observed
"I am a positive person, I never think of the glass as half empty. I just keep pushing forward" Rosie Perez the proud woman who declared this quote is a person who overcame many obstacles and difficulties to bring success in her life, despite her many hardships and traumatizing past.
We all might not admit it but we have a favorite author that we must always read and follow. Something about them will make you still want to follow in whatever they write or say. Sister Souljah is one of those influential authors. Souljah is a strong, educated, opinionated black woman who sometimes is a threat to others. Some people consider her as racist because of her opinions and thoughts but she is entitled to a freedom speech, therefore she should not have to worry about people saying she is racist. This paper centers on Sister Souljah and her works. She is one of my favorite authors and one of the most amazing person one has ever came across. Sister Souljah books draw you in because she doesn’t hold back anything when she talks or speak.
This quote corresponds with a quote from A Visit From the Good Squad; on page 34, Sasha states, “This is the music business. Five years is five hundred years” (Egan 34). These quotes deftly encompass the entire overarching message of the Good Squad: time is a goon that can never be controlled. Sasha realizes that linear time in the music industry means nothing; it’s completely relative when considering what is the most popular music of any certain time. Music is constantly being reshaped and morphing into new sounds, and as pointed out by Egan in the latter chapters of the book, relies heavily on it’s primary consumers; whatever age group that may be. The concept that music is incessantly adapted presents the passage of time as circular, similar to the Saturn Return. Many of the characters in A Visit From the Goon Squad are cruelly aware of their own mortality, and how time as a “goon” has caused them to be less successful in life than they’d hoped for. By contriving an intricate mix of music and the passage of time in this novel, readers are able to identify that the Goon Squad is structured around music and analyze how the deliberate placement of each chapter affect the reader’s interpretation of the characters. By organizing the chapters in terms of the emotional effect the overall story will have on readers, versus in chronological order, Jennifer Egan skillfully dissipates any tangible comprehension of time that a reader may have; she presents time as the impregnable, objective concept that it
Taking a look back into our history, it is very hard to graze over the fact that music has reigned as one of the most influential components of artistic expression in our time. It has been a part of numerous peoples' lives across the globe since the beginning of time. Music has been able to not only define the people that craft it, but encompass and define a whole time period and culture in its own, leaving a very bold mark upon history. Two pieces of music that have played integral roles during their time are “In Paradisum” (by an anonymous individual) during the middle ages (600-1450), and “Same Love,” by Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, featuring Mary Lambert during the 21st century (2001-2100, specifically released in 2012). These musical pieces, although from two very different spectrums in history, share a few notable similarities, as well as some remarkable differences that embody the ever so changing sound of art in time.
“You have to fight harder, dig deeper, and prove all of the doubters wrong.” ~Carli Lloyd Carli Lloyd was named the top player of the 2015 Fifa Women's World Cup. She works hard at everything she does. Not only does she train almost every day and play professional soccer, but she also stands up for women's rights. Carli has been an advocate for “equal pay, equal play” in the Women's soccer league. For these reasons she is someone I am proud to say I look up to. Like many other athletes, she has had struggles to get to the top. Yet, she still manages to be one of the best, and fight for what she believes is right.
This story is told through the use of many different techniques of writing, including, one of the most emotionally gripping, personification. The use of a line such as “When she was just a girl she expected the world but it flew away from her reach” (lines 1-2) gives the listener a childlike view on the situation, which, allows the listener to relate to and, subsequently, connect themselves to the song’s protagonist. Personification is also used in other
The youth of today are more likely to have a favourite song rather than a favourite poem. Although the feelings and hidden meanings expressed in songs are often unacknowledged by the listener, they often have qualities that resemble those of a typical poem. These qualities include word choice, mood, hidden meanings and imagery. Using the songs “Luka” by Suzanne Vega, and “April Come She Will” by Simon and Garfunkle, I am going to prove that songs can be considered a form of modern day poetry.
Pop music is a contemporary genre of music which originated in the United States and United Kingdom, and goes back as far as late 1940’s. Sherrie Levine, Untitled (After Walker Evans), 1981 Throughout this essay I am going to discuss the work of Sherrie Levine, in particular the 1981 piece entitled, Untitled (After Walker Evans). I will examine the physical, technical and formal characteristics of the work and their effect on a viewer, including my own interpretation as well as the views of others, and explore any aspects of Levine’s life that may have influenced the artwork before identifying whether the piece is defined as modern or postmodern according to Clement Greenberg’s ideas on modernism. 1.
Literary Criticism of Daniel Defoe's Novel, Roxana Most critics agree that Daniel Defoe's novel, Roxana, is his darkest work. Author Malinda Snow, who wrote "Arguments to the self in Defoe's Roxana," quotes author David Blewett saying that "Roxana is Defoe's only protagonist who is passive in the face of disaster" (Snow, 1). Roxana is portrayed as a significant character who is "intensely self-aware, she reasons with herself, judges herself, and ultimately cannot forgive herself' (Snow, l).
Every once in a while there are songs that enclose a message that appeals to feelings of common interest as well as historical events. The interesting thing about these songs is that they give to the future listeners a perception of what was being felt about that specific moment in history. For instance, “The Wind of Change” by the Scorpions is one of the few songs that as far as I know do this. This song is about the historical changes that succeeded the downfall of communism as well as the Berlin wall. Hence, the lyric of this song encloses the feelings of a generation that sees peace and freedom for the first time after a long time of hostile political relationships. This message could be perceived after the first time the song is heard. Yet, by paying attention to the poetical devices used in this song, listener could have a better appreciation about the tone and theme that this song encloses.
“Music not only changes our mood, but it also changes the way we think and our perception of the world”- Anonymous. Music is like a piano master who plucks at the keys on our personal pianos, and bends them to their own whim. We are all but puppets. This can be observed in the song “A Thousand Years”, where beauty reaches its peak. “ A Thousand Years” is a song in which a lover expresses her love for another, only to be weighed down by a tiny doubt of acceptance. This songs has some reference to the love story of Bella and Edward from The Twilight Saga. Every lyric of this song radiates the feeling of love. In fact the lines “Darling, don’t be afraid I have loved you” and “I’ll love you for a thousand more” directly address the emotion of
Music can move a person in incredible ways, whether by healing, inspiring, saddening, or even angering. But when a song touches in a positive way it imprints a lasting memory of itself in the heart and soul. That might explain why some of the most classic and popular songs through the centuries are love songs. The creative ocean of love lyrics and melodies is probably as vast as a Universe and among the shining stars are two humbling songs that will continue to move the emotions. "Somewhere out there" and "Dreaming of you" are two musical creations that have planted a lasting impression in many people’s heart.
Mother Teresa is one of the most recognized women in the world. Teresa brought in a revolutionary change in the world with her positive thoughts and love for humanity. Her missionary work started way back 1931 when she was still a little girl. She joined the Nuns as a kid in 1931, and she was later named Teresa from Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu. It was in respect and honor of the Saints of Theresa. Mother Teresa’s missions were concentrated around helping the poor people with their basic needs such as food, water and shelter. She also demonstrated a lot of interest in taking care of the weak and defenseless people in the society. For example, it has been recorded that she spent a lot of time caring for the elderly, disabled and injured. At the same
