These needs or motives, are considered to be; tenacity, power, drive and work ethic (DuBrin et al. 2006). The power motive is significant, as it plays a major role in the relations taking place within the organization. Power is central to the leadership process in the development of a manager’s self-confidence and willingness to support staff members. (Simmick & Wilkinson, 1990). The desire for power is universal. From this vantage point, power should be accepted as a natural part of any organization. Power is not evenly distributed among individuals or groups, but every individual has some degree of power.
Organizations have leaders who are effective and ineffective. Many of us want to be leaders but, do we have what it takes to be effective or are we going to be ineffective. Leaders are people who build their organization and employees up. Ineffective leaders are those who only care about getting a check. This paper will discuss effective and ineffective leaders. Christianity and Power Many Christians around the world today are being persecuted for their faith. According to Zane Pratt, for Christians in Islamic, Hindu, and Communist parts of the world, losing your job or being rejected by your family would be good outcomes after proclaiming your faith (par. 10). These Christians suffer each day for being followers of Jesus, some are even killed for it. In the western culture today, persecution in this form is not seen. If someone claims to be a Christian, some people may not approve of it, but that person will rarely ever hear a word of grief for making the decision to be a Christian.
Religion, as defined by Webster’s Dictionary is a belief in and reverence for a supernatural power accepted as the creator and governor of the universe (Houghton Mifflin, 2001). With that said, there is no commonly accepted definition of religion. Different people and different experts have different views of religion. Many people associate the religion with belief in some entity generally described as God. But then different religions and even people within a formally defined religion may hold different views about the nature of God. The only commonality between all religions is that they are all directed at guiding the individual behavior in directions that are expected to lead to their personal good as well as that of the society in general. Unlike other social institutions though, history has proven religion can rally people on a global level (Powell, 2009). Whether your experience is limited to the diversity within the United States of America or firsthand observations abroad, religion, or opinion of some form, religion is instilled and deeply rooted into all people.
