CHIROPRACTIC, OSEOPATHY, PHYSIOTHERAPY
There are many health care facilities worldwide that provide treatment for an injured patient for all ages. Some professions are easily mistaken due to their philosophies and type of treatment. Professions that are commonly mistaken are Chiropractic, Osteopathy, and Physiotherapy. The purpose of this essay is to distinctly differentiate between the three professions to both increase my own knowledge and the knowledge of others.
Chiropractic is a form of health care that predominantly focuses on the relationships of structures (mainly the spine and pelvis) and its functions (mainly the nervous system). (10) The main focus is to treat a patient without the use of drugs or surgery and to also have long term positive outcomes on the patient(s) rather than immediate effect although there are also immediate reliefs of pain (mainly in the lower back). Physiotherapy focuses on the movement and function of an injured area to assess the mobility, diagnose the injury, and treat it.(2) the injured area is usually stabilised to prevent further injury from occurring. Osteopathy focuses on the structure of the body and how the bones, muscles, joints and internal organs function as one unit. (3) Osteopathy does not just treat a sore back or knee but it treats the whole body as a suffering unit therefore there is no specific stabilisation to the injured area.
Many people tend to get confused between Chiropractic and Osteopathy. Although they are very similar in the way they treat a patient, there are also distinct differences which separates the two professions. Both professions have philosophic beliefs of holism, naturalism and therapeutic conservatism in the processes of curing a patient. They bot...

“The doctor of the future will give no medication, but will interest his patients in the care of the human frame, diet and in the cause and prevention of disease” by Thomas A. Edison. Chiropractors use hands-on spinal manipulation and other alternative treatments on the spine which will enable the body to heal itself without surgery or medication. Chiropractic care began in 1895 when its founder, Daniel David Palmer, claimed any and all diseases could be healed by nothing more than just his hands. Dr. Palmer examined a janitor who was deaf for 17 years after the janitor felt his back was out of place, so Dr. Palmer gave an adjustment to what was felt to be a misplaced vertebra in the upper back. The janitor then observed that his hearing improved thanks to Dr. Palmer. Chiropractors use manipulation to restore mobility to joints restricted by tissue injury caused by sitting without proper back support. Chiropractic is primarily used as a pain relief alternative for muscles, joints, bones, and connective tissue, such as cartilage, ligaments, and tendons. About 22 million Americans visit chiropractors annually

“The purpose of a doctor or any human in general should not be to simply delay the death of a patient, but to increase the person’s quality of life.” Orthopedic surgeons treat a number of conditions that affect the bones, joints, muscles, tendons, and nerves. The training to become an orthopedic surgeon requires multiple years of hard work and studying, but in the end, the success is worth all the stress and struggle experienced on the way. Most doctors must dedicate every fiber of their being, countless hours of work, and years of stress in their chosen profession. Medicine is only for those who can’t imagine doing anything else.

The word “chiropractor” has two word origins, the Greek words cheir and praxis; meanwhile, cheir means “hand” and praxis means “practice.” Also, most of the work that chiropractors do is done by hand (Pike para. 5). In 2002, going to a chiropractor was found to be the most commonly used program for therapy. Seventy-four percent, about 4 million, of people that had back pain went to a chiropractor to get treated. Among that 74 percent of people, 66 percent of them stated that they got “a great benefit” (Pike para. 9). Many chiropractors work full time but 1 out of 3 chiropractors work part time. Chiropractors work whenever their patients need them, even on w...

Kinesiology is a complimentary therapy used to identify and correct internal issues to relieve stress, allergies, and pain. Being described as a complimentary therapy, kinesiology is not meant to be a cure-all for the patient, but a secondary method of increasing positive results of the original therapy; this method however can be used as a primary or secondary form of therapy depending on the results for the patient and satisfaction with said results. During treatment the doctor tests 14 different areas of muscles balance, these major muscles and how they react are believed to uncover problems that need correction which cannot be found with any other testing (Rude Health).

People have created a hectic and busy world, that includes careers and daily activities that require physical activity. While attempting to attain the required physical conditioning, people often take chances with their personal health as they try to stretch their physical limits. Sometimes, people can surpass their current limits and form new boundaries; however, other times people are not so fortunate. These unfortunate times often lead to injury, including workplace accidents, sporting incidents, disease afflictions, as well as others; any or all of which could bring about the need of rehabilitation services. Many of these require physical therapy, which includes assisting injured or otherwise impaired patients as they recover to their pre-injury status or to recover as much as is physically possible. The field of physical therapy is a choice career for those who enjoy helping people recover from injury, and the following text will provide reason for choosing this profession.
Orthopedic surgeons are responsible for mending and operating on the musculoskeletal system. “Orthopedics is a medical specialty that focuses on the diagnosis, care, and treatment of patients with disorders of the bones, joints, muscles, ligaments, tendons, nerves, and skin” (Career in Orthopaedics). Depending on the damage the patient has sustained determines how the orthopedic surgeon is able to correct the patient’s injury. In many cases there are multiple ways of correcting the patient’s injury such as; using medical, physical, and rehabilitative techniques to using complex surgical methods. “Typically, as much as 50 percent of the orthopedic surgeon’s practice is devoted to no surgical or medical management of injuries or disease and 50 percent to surgical management” (Career in Orthopaedics). The majority of surgeons, including orthopedic surgeons, prefer to choose the least invasive procedures such as; arthroscopy which is a technological advancement allowing orthopedic surgeons to use special cameras in order to diagnose and treat a joint with minimal cutting and trauma to...

Medical study is a combination of clinical experience and scientific research, which requires proof and evidence. These two components can help physiotherapists with diagnosis, provide treatments for patients and making clinical decision. However, what are the ways for individuals to testify the effectiveness of these methods and treatments? Is there scientific evidence proving the information is correct and up to date? How helpful and appropriate are these methods and treatments to the patients? Hence evidence-based practice is necessary. It has a strong impact in physiotherapy, to ensure researches are more focused and relevant to physiotherapists and as a guiding principle to practice and treatment of patients.
