The Pros and Cons of Chiropractic Practice
Exercise science possess many traits that attracted my attention whether it dealt with the different job opportunities or the ability to help an individual. There are two areas of exercise science that one can choose as a possible career path or as a major minoring in something else related to this type of work. One of the areas of study includes exercise physiology which can be defined by “the study of how the body’s structures and functions are changed as a result of acute and chronic bouts of exercise”. Not only does exercise physiology promote a healthy lifestyle, but it is closely connected to human performance, fitness, development/aging, and prevention/rehabilitation from disease or injury. Pursuing a degree in exercise physiology allows an individual in this profession to choose between several careers including physical education, exercise science and athletic training (Fisher, 2). In addition, becoming a chiropractor can be achieved through exercise science.
Maintaining a degree in exercise science can allow an individual to become a chiropractor although additional schooling is required. Chiropractic and chiropractic practice often are used interchangeably, but mean two different things. “Chiropractic is a health care discipline that emphasizes the inherent recuperative power of the body to heal without the use of

drugs or surgery” (Chapman-Smith, 57) and the practice of chiropractic is the relationship between structure, function, and preservation/restoration of health (Chapman-Smith, 57). Dr. Ronald Gitelman is well-known for his contributions to the chiropractic profession. Dr. Gitelman was born in the 1930’s in Trenton, Ontario. While growing up, he partici...

following back pain (Chapman-Smith, 71). Treatment for head and neck pain are similar to back treatments in that they both undergo a sequence of mechanical and neurological effects (Chapman-Smith, 72).

“The doctor of the future will give no medication, but will interest his patients in the care of the human frame, diet and in the cause and prevention of disease” by Thomas A. Edison. Chiropractors use hands-on spinal manipulation and other alternative treatments on the spine which will enable the body to heal itself without surgery or medication. Chiropractic care began in 1895 when its founder, Daniel David Palmer, claimed any and all diseases could be healed by nothing more than just his hands. Dr. Palmer examined a janitor who was deaf for 17 years after the janitor felt his back was out of place, so Dr. Palmer gave an adjustment to what was felt to be a misplaced vertebra in the upper back. The janitor then observed that his hearing improved thanks to Dr. Palmer. Chiropractors use manipulation to restore mobility to joints restricted by tissue injury caused by sitting without proper back support. Chiropractic is primarily used as a pain relief alternative for muscles, joints, bones, and connective tissue, such as cartilage, ligaments, and tendons. About 22 million Americans visit chiropractors annually
With the healing arts increasing in popularity, individuals don’t understand the need for well-rounded therapist. Who are trained in the science of kinesiology, which includes the technique of massage to enable them to be proficient in their field. During the early 1900s, the practice of medical science became accepted in our society. Many of the Swedish massage was mingled in with those of medical doctors and medical practices.
George Magner wrote, “I learned that manipulation of the neck can cause tinnitus by injuring arteries that supply blood to the ear” (Magner 3). He also documented several other chiropractic patients who suffered from additional pain, even strokes, from an adjustment of the neck. The strokes that the patients endured do not necessarily mean chiropractors caused them. Early signs of strokes include neck soreness, headaches, and reduced limb function, which are all reasons why people visit a chiropractor in the first place. Therefore, chiropractors are not the sole reason a stroke occurs.
The word “chiropractor” has two word origins, the Greek words cheir and praxis; meanwhile, cheir means “hand” and praxis means “practice.” Also, most of the work that chiropractors do is done by hand (Pike para. 5). In 2002, going to a chiropractor was found to be the most commonly used program for therapy. Seventy-four percent, about 4 million, of people that had back pain went to a chiropractor to get treated. Among that 74 percent of people, 66 percent of them stated that they got “a great benefit” (Pike para. 9). Many chiropractors work full time but 1 out of 3 chiropractors work part time. Chiropractors work whenever their patients need them, even on w...
Exercise Science is a field of work that is valued by many. There are different paths for different kind of people whether they are interested in personal training, physical therapy, or even some kind of sports coach. The route I would like to take would be Exercise Science for Athletic Training. I want to be an Athletic Trainer because growing up, I loved playing and watching sports. I played baseball for about 2 years, ran track for 3, and played basketball my entire life. After my high school career, I knew that I could not stay involved in sports because all of the injuries I have experienced so I decided I wanted a job that is behind the scenes but still rooted in athletics.
Now that you have a better understanding about Athletic training, I will explain about physical therapy and why I would like have as a lifetime career. In an article I read, the author Sue Klappa said that, “PT’s reach into our communities through engagement and social responsibility. It compels us to bring hope and love to others. It urges us to learn to see things differently. It holds the promise of defining moments, as we take the time to see things in a new light” (Klappa 2). Klappa is a physical therapist that traveled the world to help others and when she went to different countries. She learned how important physical therapist are in the medical field and how she can get others attention. Starting a career path in physical therapy can
Due to the strong and growing evidence in scientific literature on the beneficial effects of physical activity on health and well-being, the importance of Clinical Exercise Science has increased. Physical activity is defined as any bodily movement produced by skeletal muscles that requires energy expenditure. Exercise, is a subcategory of physical activity that is planned, structured, repetitive, and purposeful in the sense that the improvement or maintenance of one or more components of physical fitness is the objective (http://www.who.int/dietphysicalactivity/pa/en/; last accessed on 30 April 2016). Generally speaking, Clinical Exercise Science is an applied clinical branch which deals with the application of various exercise modalities for
People have created a hectic and busy world, that includes careers and daily activities that require physical activity. While attempting to attain the required physical conditioning, people often take chances with their personal health as they try to stretch their physical limits. Sometimes, people can surpass their current limits and form new boundaries; however, other times people are not so fortunate. These unfortunate times often lead to injury, including workplace accidents, sporting incidents, disease afflictions, as well as others; any or all of which could bring about the need of rehabilitation services. Many of these require physical therapy, which includes assisting injured or otherwise impaired patients as they recover to their pre-injury status or to recover as much as is physically possible. The field of physical therapy is a choice career for those who enjoy helping people recover from injury, and the following text will provide reason for choosing this profession.
According to Connie Peterson, in her book entitled Athletic Training , “The medical gymastae (trainers) were said to posses ideas of the effect of diet, rest, and exercise on the development of the body. Hippocrates, the “father of modern medicine,” and his student Claudius Galen often advised their patients to exercise in the gymnasia as a means of recovering from their ills” (Peterson 275).
The individual filling the position of the physiotherapist also has the responsibility of training the other staff members on how each piece of equipment works. The physiotherapist is required to inform other staff members on how the equipment can be used for different conditioning and rehabilitation purposes. The Fit Stop also employs one individual with a bachelor degree in Kinesiology in order to provide advice to clients based on specific sports or physical activities. The need for extrinsic rewards is much higher than the need for intrinsic rewards due to all of The Fit Stop’s employees being full-time.
Chiropractic care has a number ofbenefits . That is why it is easy to find a rehab program that has chosen to incorporate chiropractic therapy into addiction treatment. There are many ways that people who have a drug or alcohol addiction can benefit from receiving chiropractic therapy.
During my undergraduate studies, I spent time exploring the field of exercise science. I endured laborious coursework that molded my character into a strong-willed, disciplined student. As I deepened my knowledge of the human body, my passion for working in health care evolved to new heights. I also grew a fondness for learning new material and concepts. By the end of my undergraduate experience, I knew how to maximize my personal success.
Another doubt that many individuals have towards chiropractic care is that they do not think it is scientifically proven to benefit. “In recent years, qualified researchers on the faculty of chiropractic colleges have evaluated many of the profession’s popular techniques,” Magner continues, “So far, most published reports have concluded that whatever technique was considered had not been proven reliable, reproducible, and/or clinically significant” (Magner 92). Magner fails to see the benefits that most people receive from chiropractic care and that chiropractic is not a form of Western medicine. “It does not see itself simply as a deranged form of scientific medicine, but outside the theoretical structure of modern medicine altogether. It
“With the exception of nutrition, more fallacies exist in the area of exercise than in any other area of health” (Dintiman, Stone, Pennington, & Davis, 1984). Exercise produces significant physical and mental benefits and is extremely vital to life. It substantially improves stamina, strengthens and tones muscles, helps prevent diseases, enhances flexibility, controls weight, and prolongs the quality of life. In order to gain all the benefits from exercise and be truly healthy, it is very important to understand and take action with both types of exercise: anaerobic and aerobic. With the combination of aerobic and anaerobic exercise, an individual will greatly increase their overall health and wellness significantly.
The GSIRC highly encourage hands on experience for student interns. In order to have a sympathetic notion on what to do as an intern, the PEES courses taken previous semesters were remarkably accommodating when assisting the clients through rehabilitating workouts. In order to understand which anatomical part the patient is rehabilitating, anatomy and physiology were one of the vital subjects to be acquainted with. Having the understanding of the anatomy terms helped me, as an intern, to understand majority of the diagnosis shown on the patients’ charts. As the patients goes through their exercises it were also essential to understand the movements of each exercise such as abduction with external rotation or knee flexion. The course that corre...
