Chimpanzees are the closest primates to humans. Like us, very smart, very clever primates have incredibly complex and sophisticated social structures. Many studies have shown that they are altruistic, plan for the future, and have basic arithmetic skills.
Chimpanzees are all black, but they are born with pale faces and white tails, which get dark as they grow older. They have prominent ears and both males and females have white beards.
Locomotion patterns include quadrupedal knuckle walking and occasional bipedalism. Chimpanzees are both terrestrial and arboreal, with the amount of time spent on the ground varying between study sites and between sexes all chimpanzees build sleeping nests in trees at night.

The number of estrous chimpanzees is related to food abundance due to the energetic requirements of ovulation and mating, female chimpanzees are more likely to come into estrus during times when food is readily available. Most of the chimpanzee's reproductive behavior is promiscuous, indicating that females mate with multiple males in rut at the same time, most of which occur during the maximum rotation period of 10 days. There are other types of reproductive strategies that are recognized as well. Restrictive mating, where the dominant male restricts other males from mating with estrous females in the community, consortship mating, where an adult pair leave the community for several days to weeks, and extra-group mating, where females leave their communities and mate furtively with males from nearby communities. Chimpanzee communities and mating groups do not always overlap when considering the diversity of reproductive environments. This may have evolved because women have limited options for their spouses after they have devoted themselves to society. By having various strategies, female chimpanzees can expand the range of male they choose as they do not lose important men's support in their communities. A Primate’s Memoir, written by Robert Sapolsky, documents the author’s time in Kenya while he studied the various behaviors of a troop of baboons. One of the key aspects of the book was the social rank that developed within the troop. Female baboons have a social hierarchy that is fairly cut and dry. The eldest baboons in the troop are considered the higher-ranking females, and as the baboons get younger, so to follows the string of dominance. The ranking for males was essentially from the strongest baboons to the weakest baboons. The baboon at the top of the social hierarchy was considered the alpha male. This social rank has huge implications for the troop in regards to which baboons mated with each other. If another baboon wanted to become the alpha male, then he would have to challenge the current alpha male to a fight, and win. The baboon’s distinct personality mixed with their instincts are the primary factors for where one lands on the social hierarchy. Another key aspect of the book was the strategies that took place when the baboons wanted to mate with another baboon. Similar to humans, the baboon males tried to impress the female baboons in a way that would make them want to mate. The rank of the male is considered to be one of the greatest factors contributing to what mate they end up with, because there is nothing more impressive than becoming a high-ranking baboon. Also, there were instances of lower-ranking baboons strategizing and forming teams with other baboons to become a higher ranking baboon for the mating possibilities. The baboons in the group are considered a patch-work of different troops, as it is common for one baboon to move to different groups frequently.

This dependence reaches farther than a physiological need. Infants rely on their mothers for a wide variety of demands. The mother-infant bond is critical to maximizing the fitness of each individual, as well as the growth of the species.

All primates have the same sensation and are capable of receiving excessive amounts of information. All senses, sight, smell, taste, hearing, and touch are essential to the development, survival, and overall well-being of living primates. It is fascinating how non-human primates, without language, can communicate in the same ways as human primates, with language. Non-human primates and human primates are highly developed mammals that possess many of the same communicative characteristics, but still differ greatly. Non-human primates fit into the category of not having language, but being able to communicate.

For instance, Goodall observed during her research that a male gorilla “would threaten [me] with an upward and backward movement jerk of his head…” Some of their emotions are easy to read, while at other times we have to look at multiple places on their faces to understand their feelings. A chimpanzee also uses its facial expressions and sounds to communicate with each other, such as hoots and yells.

Not only can they learn the American Sign Language, they also have a concept of self where they can recognize themselves in mirrors (something most animals can't do). Many people get caught up in the difference between animals and humans, but these animals should be given certain rights. For example, they deserve the right to freedom from suffering and abuse. Humans are primates just as chimpanzees are; just because they can't communicate in the same way we do, that doesn't mean they should be held prisoner against their will, or get tested on without having a say in that. I believe all animals have a right to a blissful, fulfilling life.
Our earliest ancestors are primates. They are our closest relatives which is why we can see our behavior’s and practices in them. If we observe them we can get a better understanding of them and us, human beings. But unfortunately we all don’t get the chance to see a Primate right in our backdoor. I observed chimpanzees in the Kimberly-Clark Chimpanzee Forest exhibit at the Dallas zoo. These African apes, like humans, are hominoids and fall into the larger category of catarrhines. Their scientific classification is Pan troglodytes. There were about ten chimpanzees in that habitat. Most of them were grown adults, except two children. They were robust and had black fur. The average weight of the chimps was listed on a display to be about 115 pounds.
