This week was slightly different than previous weeks. Instead of discussing stories, we talked about the technicalities of film and how they are produced to be on a screen. We also covered the two types of filmmakers in the industry. Using various clips of different movies, I was able to distinguish the difference between those filmmakers that trust in the image and those that trust in reality. The topic of realism was covered heavily using the movie of the week, Children of Men, as a prime example. First, we covered the act of directing a film. The process usually began with a script. The director's role is to visualize a script and make it come to life. Scripts are supposed to catch the attention of directors and convince them it can be turned into a film. These are usually not read by the general public, but only by the production team. A common misconception with scripts is that the final cut of the film ends up exactly like the script intended. This happens for a number of reasons. Writers changing their mind, mishaps on set, and practicality are just a few examples of what can cause change in the script. These changes are referred to as accidentals. David Mamet, a playwright that has directed several movies, states that consciousness reduces something in humanity and when we act without reflection or consciousness, we are the most human. On screen, accidentals look and feel like the most organic types of scenes, thus causing directors to create conditions to promote accidentals.
