In Australia a report of domestic child abuse is made every thirteen minutes. In 2003-04 there were 219,384 reports of suspected domestic child abuse and neglect, made to state authorities. Childhood domestic abuse is a life-long damaging issue which does not get talked about enough. Today I am here to speak to you, high school students about childhood abuse and the importance of coming forward as I cannot stress enough to you the impacts it will have on a teenager’s mental health and wellbeing. Through past experiences victims tend to escape the bad memories through the use of narcotic substances. Hidden amongst you some are going through that. Studies have shown that there are links between child abuse and mental illnesses later on in life. One of the psychological conditions that you can develop when you are unable to grasp what has happened to you is called Post Traumatic Stress disorder. I was hospitalized at the age of 16 due to this condition. My condition worsened as I remembered more and more of the truth as to what had happened. How would you feel if your basic human rights were taken away? Because that’s what abuse is. As I was a person who was filled with painful memories and experiences I needed to find an outlet, but I found an escape through literature and music. A way you can deal with PTSD is relax, plenty of rest and exercise regularly. But an escape is not through illicit substances, but to me at the time, seemed an easier option. It’s hard to come to terms with an act like abuse when it happens to you, and often victims turn towards experimenting with illicit substances to suppress the memories of the
