Approximately 5 children a day die from child abuse. Child abuse causes many problems for not only the child but the family involved as well. This is why child abuse must stop not just locally but around the world. Child abuse has been around for centuries. Before the 18000’s children were considered property of their fathers. Some cultural customs even allow violence to occur in a family. By 1870 child abuse caught attention of people when stories of an orphan girl, named Mary Ellen Wilson, being beaten on her foster home started spreading. This got people involved enough to take it to the courts and ask that the law to prevent child abuse be made. However, the lives of children were among the most arduous. Linda Pollock states in her book Forgotten Children that between 1660 and 1800 families -and society in general- became more affectionate, child-oriented, and permissive of uniqueness and unstructured time (67). Although this may be true, many other sources depict the lives of children as taxing and oppressive at best.
