Child abuse is a very serious problem, and many people have failed to help correct this issue. Child abuse comes in five different forms: Neglect, physical abuse, emotional abuse, sexual abuse, and medical abuse. Sadly, millions of children are exposed to all five forms of abuse during their childhood. Neglecting a child is when a person does not provide a child with his everyday needs. Physical abuse is leaving bruises, broken bones, and other marks on a child. Emotional abuse is when a parent verbally assaults their child resulting in the child forgetting his self-worth. Sexual abuse or molestation of a child is when a person touches a child inappropriately and forces them to perform sexual acts with them. Medical abuse is when a child is …show more content…
After being abused, a person may feel like they are living in their worst nightmare. A child who is old enough to understand the abuse when it happened will always remember it for the rest of her life. Some abuse victims may begin doing drugs to help them cope with, or try to forget the abuse. It is also very common that teenagers who are being abused at home will run away to find help and feel safe. Children love and trust their parents from their time of birth, but once a parent abuses them all sense of love and trust will fade towards any person. Being abused could possibly ruin the chance of getting married and falling in love because a person they loved hurt them the most. Many abuse victims enroll in counseling classes to help them cope with everyday life and to find a form of peace. Children who were neglected must see doctors on a regular to help cure possible malnutrition. Those who survive being abused are very fortunate because “. U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) studies show that five children will die every day because of child abuse or neglect” (Child Abuse). For example, Marchella Pierce was a four years old girl who was being abused by her mother and grandmother in Brooklyn, she was found tied to her bed and deceased; Marchella Pierce guardians made her overdose on adult …show more content…
If child abuse was corrected, many children would still be alive and many children would still be healthy. Authorities have tried to enforce different methods to try to end child abuse, but it is clear these methods have not worked. If a teacher notices any bruises, or if a child tells the teacher they are being abused the teacher must report it immediately. When a parent suspects that her child is being abused by a baby sitter or nanny they are required to report it and keep the child away from the baby sitter while the case is being investigated. Doctors are also required by law to report any signs of abuse to authorities if they notice anything unusual during their examination. During an oral exam a dentist can easily identify sexual abuse because “If a gag is inserted into a child’s mouth for an extended period, the teeth will begin to turn grayish in color and the corner of the mouth will become bruised” (Fisher-Owens). These methods are minor compared to the newer methods to end child
It is important to appreciate that these issues are very complex, and to be familiar with how abuse and neglect can affect various aspects of a person's life. Child abuse does not affect every person the same. The extremity of the abuse and different situations determine the effect. Some people could live on to become great people and do great things. They don’t look at the abuse as something negative but rather as something that made them strong and made them believe that they were better and could do better than the situation that they were in. Dealing with abuse after it is over is the toughest thing to handle, most people that could afford therapy go to it, but since most people can‘t afford it they try to deal with it the best they can. Although in most cases the child is removed from the home that the abuse is happening in, sometimes child abuse can slip by unnoticed and that can have severe consequences on the child as well as others.
Currently, there are many children whom suffer from emotional, physical, and sexual abuse in their family. Emotional abuse is the lack of interest or affection parents have towards their children. As a result of emotional abuse, children are left feeling worthless and unloved. Physical abuse refers to attacking children resulting visible bodily injuries from either being burned, pushed, punched, slapped, or whipped. Sometimes physical abuse can be extremely severe that children have broken bones, fractures, or hemorrhaging. Sexual abuse occurs when a person forces, tricks, or threatens children to have sexual contact. These acts of child abuse could prevent children from living a normal adulthood. In order to deal with such a traumatic childhood, adults abused as children should rid themselves of such burdensome, painful memories.
Child abuse can be Physical, Sexual, Emotional, and Physiological Abuse. Child abuse is not only just about abuse but neglect as well. The difference between abuse and neglect is, that abuse is the maltreatment of someone and neglect is failure to give the proper care to a person (Jilani, 2010). Neglect has different types as well, such as Educational, Emotional, and Physical Neglect. Every place in the world has some types of statistics on Child Abuse and Neglect. For example, “The United States has one of the worst records among industrialized nations – losing on average between four and seven children every day to child abuse and neglect (Childhelp, n.d.).” The fact that so many young lives are lost before they even get to begin is
Child abuse, while having many different forms and levels of severity, can be basically defined as the maltreatment of a child by a parent or other adult. When one thinks of child abuse, usually the first thing that comes to mind is physical harm, but the issue is actually much more complex. The abuse of a child can also be manifested in verbal and emotional forms, as well as in sexual molestation. All forms of child abuse generally result in similar emotional disorders and behavioral issues, but the major consequences of sexual abuse, such as mental or emotional scarring, promiscuity, and the tendency of former victims to become sexual abusers, cause it to be the most severely damaging form of child abuse.
Child neglect and abuse is an unfortunate reality for many children today. It can have significant developmental impacts on children until they are an adult. Unfortunately it is not noticed until the damage is already done. Parents are the ones that are supposed to take care of their child. The consequences of a child getting mistreated young may endure long after the neglect occurs. People having children and not ready to be parents. Scaring the child for life because they decided that is was fun to beat on their child and abuse them mentally, and some even sexually. The effects can appear in all aspects of life, rather it is psychological or behavioral. There are three main effects of neglect and abuse that can range from minor physical injuries, not getting along with others, or can become aggressive and affect them later on in life.
Child abuse is an issue within society that effects the lives of not only the victims but also the lives of many people in the social order. Child abuse is any mistreatment or neglect of a child that results in non-accidental injury or harm and which cannot be logically explained. There are several forms of abuse and neglect and many state governments have developed their own legal description of what constitutes child maltreatment for the purposes of removing a child and prosecuting a criminal charge. Child abuse consists of different forms of harm including physical, emotional, sexual, and neglect.
Every year more than 3 million reports of child abuse are made in the United States involving more than 6 million children. There can be no single factor identified as the cause of child abuse. However it appears to be influenced by the parents' histories, psychological resources, and economic status.
Many children suffer at the hands of adults - often their own parents. They are beaten, kicked, thrown into walls, and burned with cigarettes. They have their heads held under the water of toilet bowls, are scalded by hot water or they are forced to stand in freezing showers until they pass out. A child could be stuffed into running washing machines or sexually molested, suffer from neglect in the forms of starvation and lack of medical attention, and still go unnoticed by outsiders. In fact, it is estimated that about five children die every day in the U.S. from some form of child abuse. It is a sickening practice that has no set standard of rules to finish off the persisting problem. Different states have different methods and agencies to help prevent abuse in the home, some work quite well while others bomb - a dangerous gamble when it comes to the life or mental state of a child.
The abuse of children is not new. It dates back to biblical times. During recent years, child abuse has had a rise in the public eye. According to the nationally known website Childabuse.com, there are four types of child abuse: physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, and neglect (Childabuse), each with its own unique set of characteristics, each affecting a child differently, and each noticeable, stoppable, and preventable.
In American society today we fail to address several issues that need to be addressed. Unfortunately, child abuse is one of the major issues that our country is plagued with, yet we neglect to bring this to the attention of the entire nation. It is often over looked because everyone has a different view of what exactly defines child abuse. The International Child Abuse Network (ICAN) uses four basis categories to docunment the child abuse cases. They are: emotional abuse, neglect, physical abuse, and sexual abuse. I will be describing the first three.
Do you think spanking a child is child abuse? Well, I do. Let’s say your 7 year old son did something wrong. How about he made a kid cry at school. Instead of spanking him for punishment, how about you sit him down and explain what he did was wrong. I believe he will benefit more from being told that what he did was wrong than to be spanked. With some kid’s childhoods, it starts out as spanking, then leads to other things that are much worse. It could turn into beating, slapping, and punching. This commonly happens and that child will grow up with violent actions such as beating other kids like their parent has done to him. This also can lead to suicide. Teenage suicide is common with kids that have been physically abused. Also, if you spank and/or beat your child, s/he will most likely grow up to resent you. If you don’t spank your child and don’t be an extremely strict parent, I believe it will be a more beneficial childhood. Sure, your child is not going to behave perfectly every day, but he or she will learn from mistakes. In 2006, the third most leading causes of death of people the ages of 15-19 was suicide. This bothers me. I myself have felt suicidal before. My father died when I was 10, my father and I were very close. When he passed away, I felt very lonely. I was down in the dumps for a couple years but then I finally got out of it. Time can heal anything. Losing a parent can absolutely destroy a child. If that child has a bad family except for the mom, and that mom dies and the child is left with that bad family, suicide chances increases. Childhood suicide is more common with poorer families. Families that live in bad neighborhoods were there is a lot of crime and bullying. Bullying is a huge factor in suicide. Bully...
Child maltreatment is a widespread issue that affects thousands of children every year. There are four common types of child maltreatment; sexual abuse, physical abuse, emotional abuse and neglect. All of these types of abuse are very serious and can have many consequences for the children and families. The most common consequence of severe child maltreatment is the removal of that child from their home (Benbenishty, Segev, Surkis, and Elias, 2002). Most social workers trying to determine the likelihood of removal evaluate the type and severity of abuse, as well as the child’s relationship with their parents (Benbenishty et al., 2002). When children are removed from their homes there are many options of alternative housing. The places they are allowed to live are a relative’s home, foster home, or a group home. In a study of children removed from their homes, 68% went to a foster home rather than a relative or another form of alternative housing (Faller, 1991). Reunification with a parent is the most common goal that is set forth by Child Protective Services even though recurrent abuse is likely to happen based upon the prior type of abuse and the age of the child (Connell et al., 2009). Child maltreatment is becoming a prevalent problem that has numerous consequences for both the child and family.
Abuse can happen to anyone, at any age, at any time. This is repetitive acts of behavior of wanting to maintain power and have control over someone whether it be through childhood, adolescents, or adulthood. This subject is sensitive as it impacts so many different people around the world. The topic of abuse is not just a family matter, it comes in all forms, such as sexual, emotional, and physical. Abuse is accompanied by the long term emotional tolls, especially on children because their brains are still developing and can take abuse harder than others. One question to ask, is how does one overcome abuse? As children and adolescents develop, how do they function emotionally and physically? These traumatic experiences that happen through
Today child neglect is the largest part of child abuse in the United States, and almost two-thirds of all reported cases in child protective services is neglect (Dubowitz). Before the 1970’s child abuse mostly referred to physical abuse; however, now it encompasses physical, emotional, and sexual abuse as well as neglect (Compton’s). Physical abuse is when a child is hurt by getting hit, punched, kicked, or any other form of beating by an adult (Compton’s). This abuse will only harm the child physically and though it is horrific and can lead to long term effects it will normally only lead to violence. Emotional abuse is when an adult is hateful to the child by calling him names, and another form of emotional abuse is when an adult is punishing a child in a way that will cause him mental trauma (Compton’s). Emotional abuse is terrible for the child’s self-esteem however they can go and learn that they are important to the world by their contributions. Sexual abuse is when a child is touched inappropriately or molested (Compton’s). This is detrimental to a child but in most cases the child will block this out for when they grow older it is like it never happened which will cause no harm to their mental state. Neglect is when an adult will not seek medical help for their child and will not provide them with food, shelter, clothing, or emotional support (Sullivan). This is where the real trauma takes place on a child. The child will not suffer from being hit but they suffer from starving until someone is kind enough to feed them or they die from malnutrition. The child will not suffer from a parent calling them names but they might never know if their parent knows their name or cares to even speak to th...
