Story of our lives takes some decisive turns as we make our way through the figments of our imagination towards and over the threshold of reality. It was one such turn and a milestone that was the driving force behind my decision to choose Chemistry as my graduate major and research area.
As an applicant for PhD Chemistry program at your esteemed university, I would like to provide an overview of my personal interests and ambitions in pursuing the doctorate study in your University.
EDUCATION:
I grew up in a science-friendly home. My parents always encouraged me to ask questions, think critically, draw models, practice reasoning and watch science programs on television. My schooling provided me with interactive teaching and

Chemistry is critical to resolving today’s problems. Each day's news contains concerns where chemistry matters, everything from quicker and affordable drug development, cleaner and more efficient fuel sources, safer air and purified drinking water, the design of faster computers and molecular machines, biotechnology to develop fitness and food sources across the globe, nanotechnology to reduce the size and ecological impact of many consumer goods, and green industrial procedures to limit pollution. Recent technical innovations and enrichments have undoubtedly added immensely to the applications of chemistry. So, I ask myself, why not chemistry? I see chemistry as the answer to the question of human’s survival, the hope of better days to come, careers to be established, and influences to be …show more content…
Subject type, research areas, all are in complete accordance with my interest. This inquisitive nature attracted me to the sciences throughout my school years and, in particular, to chemistry during my undergraduate years at college. I spent a significant portion of my junior and senior years conducting an honors research project under the guidance of Rob Geis Ph.D., Chairman of the department of chemistry. My research experience taught me not only how to form a carbon-carbon bond using transition metals, but more importantly how to properly obtain, process and analyze data in order to draw conclusions and formulate theories. ...
I have always been inspired by the workings of chemistry and mathematics. My studies of these subjects have developed my understanding and have made me pursue my interest in these two topics. I want to take up chemistry as it involves a large amount of mathematics which I value and understand to be challenging, yet very enjoyable, as there is always an alternative route to obtain the answer. Additionally, I am drawn to the course because it is a mixture of all these exacting subjects, forming a degree that is very demanding and stimulating. Chemists are constantly thinking of new ways to produce viable drugs containing different isomers to improve the pharmaceutical sector using mathematical equations. Chemistry is about innovation, applying information to new areas and how to do things better than they were before, the degree appeals to and fascinates me.
...ram.I am aware of the kind of dedication and resilience I will have to show over the years. I feel that I am adequately prepared for that, both in having technical qualifications and the right mind-set. My interest in the field of Computer Science and my eagerness to pursue Masters in the field strengthened when I came across the University of xxxx website for Computer Science. I intend to participate in the ongoing research in the campus. I am sure that the peerless faculty, the excellent facilities and the stimulating academic environment among the students of the University of xxx will prove immensely fruitful and facilitate my development as an individual researcher in my field.
This summer I have immersed myself in the field of chemical biology. Working under Dr. Albert Bower’s in the Division of Chemical Biology and Medicinal Chemistry of the Eshelman School of Pharmacy, I was introduced to the world of natural products. My time was focused on the isolation of various enzymes and modified peptides. Through much trial and error, I was able to procure a number of enzymes that will be used to reconstitute and identify the structure of a chemically complex thiopeptide. Beyond the knowledge gained of the research at hand I was able to gain valuable insight into the interworks of the research world.
An exceptionally eminent faculty, an environment abounded with scholastic activity and a graduate program that beautifully blends the pearls of high-end course work and research facilities at the avant-grade of every field are the attributes that drive my motivation to choose your university for my graduate studies. I can affirm that I possess the basic aptitude, dedication and potential to maintain the aspiration and motivation required for my graduate study. I am certain that the graduate program offered by your University will prove to be the most efficient and effective approach towards my future career. I am convinced that this opportunity will significantly heighten my research expertise, providing me with the essential competence and allowing me to presume my knowledge and potentials to an advanced level.
Though many people fail to realize it, chemistry is a subject essential to everyday life, due to the fact that it is the branch of science that deals with the identification of the substances of which matter is composed. But what we must understand is that everything in the universe is composed of matter, hence chemistry is necessary in learning more about the world and universe that we live in. There are many careers and fields affiliated with chemistry that people pursue to learn more about the composition of the universe, but for now, let us examine the logistics of three of these careers. These three careers involving chemistry are geochemistry, environmental chemistry, and chemical engineering.
Ever since I began studying science and mathematics at all levels of educations I have always had an interest in the production of useful materials. In the growing turmoil of today; a world full of global warming and diminishing resources, questions often arise in my mind such as, "can we make a more efficient, more durable and a renewable resource that will overshadow fossil fuels? and have less of an impact on our environment?" Up to now, I have not found a solution to these questions and answering these questions is a personal aspiration of mine which I aim to fulfil by achieving a degree in Chemical engineering and eventually I will contribute to the field in my own unique way. The debate surrounding sustainable energy fascinates me, having recently learned from personal research I have understood what an authoritative role chemists and chemical engineers play in the industry at the present time and how, by working as a team, they contribute to an improved future for the whole world. However, one of the main reasons that has single-mindedly driven me this far to want to study chemical engineering is a book I have read, “Beyond the Molecular Frontier: Challenges for Chemistry and Chemical Engineering” While reading this book, I had solidified my understandings of what chemical engineering is all about. Also, one of the main processes mentioned was polymerisation and is something I already study in A-level chemistry, it is something that not only interests me, but is a personal career aspiration of mine. Reading this book gave me a determination to be the person who helps improve the future of the industry and provide an answer to the questions I always ask myself by studying this degree.
Throughout my school career I have always loved chemistry. In Chemistry there was always a sense that there was more, there was always something new and exciting to be discovered and theories to be proven (or even disproven). Chemistry was the main subject with a real practical aspect to it during school and it is this, along with my genuine fascination with the subject, which fuels my desire to study it further.
I climbed down off of the wooden stool in the middle of the room, going to my mother as she peered through the microscope. My mom got her degree as a medical technologist and in the early years of my life she sometimes took me along to work at the lab where she developed vaccines for bacterial infections in turkeys. I wandered around the machines, stopping to ask for the purpose of each button and my love for science began. The elementary years of my life were filled with books from the nonfiction section: starfish to robots, planets to plants. Transitioning to middle and high school, I filled downtime with TedTalks from futurists talking about changing our chemical structure to reshape evolution and PodCasts contemplating the ethics of studying

I am aware of the hard work and perseverance necessary for research work and I know that it is not always as exciting as the published results seem to indicate. Nevertheless, I am sure that my aptitude and drive will see me through the challenge. It is with this in mind, that I look forward to a long and rewarding relationship with your university as a graduate student, I take this opportunity to thank the University faculty for their patient perusal of my application.
I have contacted PROF, who has encouraged me to apply. I would really love working under his guidance for my PhD’s believe that graduate education at your University will enhance my knowledge, give me wide exposure and develop my abilities to do independent research. I consider myself an enthusiastic and hardworking person, and I am sure that my stay your university will be a very fruitful one.
Chemistry has been around for a very long time. Chemistry dates back to as far as the prehistoric times. If you put the amount of time chemistry takes up in a timeline, you would split it into four general categories. The four categories are: prehistoric times - beginning of the Christian era (black magic), beginning of the Christian era - end of 17th century (alchemy), end of 17th century - mid 19th century (traditional chemistry), and mid 19th century - present (modern chemistry).
