This summer I have immersed myself in the field of chemical biology. Working under Dr. Albert Bower’s in the Division of Chemical Biology and Medicinal Chemistry of the Eshelman School of Pharmacy, I was introduced to the world of natural products. My time was focused on the isolation of various enzymes and modified peptides. Through much trial and error, I was able to procure a number of enzymes that will be used to reconstitute and identify the structure of a chemically complex thiopeptide. Beyond the knowledge gained of the research at hand I was able to gain valuable insight into the interworks of the research world. My appreciation and admiration for the work done by researchers across the world is truly indescribable. The countless hours spend acquiring knowledge, developing methods, and producing compounds is beyond comprehension. The experience as a whole has reassumed my interest in the world of pharmaceuticals. However, after encountering this limitless field first hand, I feel as though I need to further experience this field of study. It feels as though there are too many amazing options to merely choose one. Additionally, I would argue that the opportunity has made me question what I really want when it comes to a career. I see the importance of balancing the pillars of work and life. I would argue that there is a fine line between working at a productive pace and completely dedicating all my time to the job at hand. Overall, my experience working in the Bower’s Lab was challenging yet fruitful on a variety of levels. Dr. Bower’s has allowed me the pleasure of continuing my research in hopes of publishing on the progress I have made over this summer. This opportunity has far surpassed my expectations. Regarding, the copper and sodium chloride, no visible change occurred after 5 minutes had passed. The copper metal remained at the bottom of the test tube undeterred by the NaCl. There may not have been a reaction because copper is lower on the reactivity series than sodium.
My affinity for biology comes from my childhood days that I spent watching dissection of rats and looking at the cellular structure under microscope. My mother, being a professor of biology regularly used to take me with her to a Biology lab and that is where my journey towards medical career began. Early on in my life, my family went through a long agony of my father's illness and death. This became a solitary stimulus for me to take up this profession and a driving force to strive for excellence. Going through that turmoil of recurrent hospital visits gave me a firsthand experience of an anguishing family.

Since my early schooling days, science and mathematics have always fascinated me given that all components of the world are explained on the basis of these disciplines. In this regard, Pharmacy which is based on Chemistry and Mathematics has interested me a great deal as it has direct impacts on our daily lives. The more I have become familiar with the chemistry and mathematics knowledge involved in pharmacy, the more I have appreciated its significance in improving the lives of people in the community. Out of the many careers that one would opt to pursue, Pharmacy has stood out as the career that will enable me serve the society more directly and have a real impact in the quality of peoples’ lives by touching their health. In addition, I love a career that is challenging and one that I will be involved in even in old age. In this case, Pharmacy offers me this opportunity. My interest in Pharmacy has also developed from my personal health experiences and becoming aware of its expansiveness. I have been interested in studying Pharmacy since my experience in my home country of Eritrea highlighted by the basic health care system existing there, and I have had the first-hand experience of how the lack of medication affects a community's health. When I moved to the UK and studied GCSE Science I was further convinced that pharmacy is the career that I wanted to pursue. This shaped my choice of A-levels in Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics. There has been much excitement about the latest science news in which a remote controlled airplane was flown using seawater fuel. The U.S. Navy created the fuel by taking carbon dioxide and hydrogen from seawater and combing them to create an organic compound called a hydrocarbon, which can be used for energy. I believe this is a really an amazing discovery since the earth has a lot of seawater to use as fuel. The oil, gas and coal we currently use as fuel will not last forever. The possible use of seawater as future source of fuel is just one of many applications of organic compounds, compounds which contain carbon molecules. Carbon is a unique element because it has the ability to form many compounds with itself and with other nonmetal elements like oxygen, hydrogen, nitrogen, sulfur and phosphorous. Carbon has four electrons on its outer shell, which leaves four electrons available to create covalent bonds with other carbon molecules and other various elements. Carbon’s unique properties include forming single, double and triple bonds which can combine with other atoms, forming chains which can combine with other elements and forming isomers, which are molecules that have similar composition as the original molecule but a different arrangement of its atoms. Organic compounds, which have been found naturally or have been made synthetically by chemists, make our life much easier. Some of the many applications of organic chemistry are in medicine, energy sources and industry.
Chemistry is the most fascinating science to me. Chemistry applies to all things in the universe; living or non-living. Everything is made of elements which are made up of atoms of a certain atomic number. Thereafter I took AP Chemistry, I knew I had to choose a career in the field of chemistry. I understand and enjoy learning about chemistry. Chemistry is important, interesting, and ever expanding. Therefore, I must pursue a career in Chemistry.

Having been brought up in a strong and secure family, my parents have inculcated good values and principles in me. My parents’ support has always motivated me to reach my goals. Being from a family where both my parents' are highly educated and my father having done his Doctorate in Botany has always inspired me to pursue my ultimate goal of being a researcher, either in industry or in academia in this field. The field experience was very effective in progressing myself professionally. My next steps will be to further my research training. I plan to enter a Ph.D. program in a biomedical science as my next academic step. I will likely begin study at John A. Burns School of Medicine in cell and molecular biology in August 2016.
