I have been interested in studying Pharmacy since my experience in my home country of Eritrea highlighted by the basic health care system existing there, and I have had the first-hand experience of how the lack of medication affects a community's health. When I moved to the UK and studied GCSE Science I was further convinced that pharmacy is the career that I wanted to pursue. This shaped my choice of A-levels in Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics. During my time in the Pharmacy, I found it to be rewarding, informative and a beneficial experience as it gave me an insight of how a local pharmacy operates. It also showed me how varied a pharmacist's roles are, not do only pharmacists dispense medicinal drugs but offer information about healthy lifestyles like stop-smoking programmes and sexual health. The biggest responsibility of a Pharmacist is to make sure the dosages of the medicine is accurate and correct instructions given to the patient about a prescription. Furthermore, I learnt that teamwork is vital to maximise the completion of tasks. I also learnt that verbal communication is essential to improve understanding between patients and pharmacists. To educate myself about what pharmacist do in their everyday practice I read pharmacy times. My duties were to check expiry dates of medicines, insert invoices into the computer and help the pharmacists with dispensing drugs. About two years ago my closest friend passed away. As I sat at her bedside in the hospital I was shocked to see her in that stricken position. I wondered why was this happening to her?Why was she suffering needlessly? Since I was the age of 16, I have had the desire to help others. It first started with my neighbor Cheryl Conel. Cheryl was an intimately close neighbor of mine who I used to work for. As the years went by Cheryl and I became closer and our friendship strengthened considerably. She became my first strong female role model. Cheryl became very ill one day and learned that she had a Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infection. This bacteria presented very suddenly and quickly caused her to lapse into a coma. I didn't understand at the time just how ill she was-- in my mind I thought she was going to recover and go home soon. I quickly learned that this bacteria is very difficult to eradicate and about a week later on December 9th 2009, Cheryl passed away. Since my early schooling days, science and mathematics have always fascinated me given that all components of the world are explained on the basis of these disciplines. I enjoy figuring out exactly how much of a medication a doctor prescribed a patient, retrieving the medication, and filling the exact dosage that the patient needs. Pharmacy is a combination of biological and chemical aspects of science providing quality care to patients hence is a perfect aspiration for me. Studying chemistry has provided me with analytical skills which would be beneficial when furthering my studies. Aspirin is a dependent drug manufactured by ethanoic anhydride and salicylic acid; medicine would be incomplete without these chemicals available today allowing drug manufacture. Pharmacy is based on working with drugs therefore I aim to develop pre-existing knowledge via entering this field.

On top of maintaining my GPA, I have also been able to balance two jobs and other extracurricular activities.
