Chemistry 1A03 is a discussion of chemical fundamentals, including bonding, structure, reactivity and energetics, with emphasis on applications to health, energy and the environment. The typical week for chemistry starts on Mondays where I watch online modules covering the information in the weekly lectures. Before the lectures but after watching the modules, an online quiz is due at midnight every Tuesday must be completed. Some may find this structure for learning odd however, it helps hone my time management skills as the deadline for the weekly quizzes is rather rigid. Furthermore, the quizzes force me to learn the material and mitigates the effects of procrastination. Procrastination is the bane of my success and leads me to cram my learning. …show more content…
One key skill that I struggle with is being able to place trust in other individuals I do not know well. This is the case with many new opportunities that come in life and working with lab partners is one small step in the right direction in improving this skill. Evidently, Chemistry 1A03 is a well-rounded course that has enabled me to improve my academic and life competence especially my organizational abilities. On another note, the course is supplemented with an online textbook testing platform known as Mastering Chemistry. Mastering Chemistry has been designed in such a sophisticated manner with a single purpose in mind to improve the results of students in their understanding. Despite this being an optional enrichment opportunity I decided to participate. Nearing the end of the semester, it is very clear that utilizing Mastering Chemistry was the right choice and my ability to grasp concepts was
In the passage “The chem 20 factor” by Ellen Goodman explains the long process and hardships of what it takes to become a doctor, she explains how it all starts with Chem 20 and how all the Pre-med students say “Every class is a combat mission” this just goes to show that Ellen Goodman can connect with the readers because she has her own experiences with the same struggles which can really grab the attention of the reader to connect and feel the same way she does.
Learning, like religion, is a social experience.” Currently, I have a class that I am enrolled in, often I find myself asking “Why I am in this class?” I learn nothing from this lady, her notes are continuously blurry, and every single student is unable to read them. She talks in circles and expects everyone to be able to follow. Personally, I wish I would have taken an online course for this particular class. Everything I have learned in this class has been solely self-taught. To be prepared for the class, I pre-read the chapter we will be having a discussion about in addition to study the curriculum, still I cannot keep up or understand what is coming out of her mouth. I also feel that I am not the only one in class that is completely lost, which makes me feel better about the whole situation. Whereas I am also enrolled in another class, which I adore and value every single minute. This particular class requires an hour and forty-five minutes a day for four days a week. To think this class I feared the most when I enrolled at the beginning of school. Surprisingly now, it is by far my favorite! I have learned so much information in such a little span of time. It is truly remarkable, the change of mind I have had towards this subject! Credit is due to my professor, she is outstanding! Then, of course, I have this class! Comp 1, which as you know is online. There has been struggles, as I think I would have learned better with face to face encounters with my peers and involved discussion with other students and a professor, although I think I have managed to keep my head above the water so far. All- together, with only my brief personal experience given, you cannot say online courses are worse than an in class
My biggest improvement in this English 111 class was my writing. Writing tasks that were assigned greatly strengthened my overall performance throughout the course, preparing me for the future classes. The environment made me feel at ease, helping me evolve as a student, and as a person. The environment made me feel at ease, preparing me for future classes. Another large achievement of mine that I displayed in the class, was my ability to talk comfortably with the other students. The variety of group activities we did allowed me to openly speak my opinion, leading to a better overall performance with my work and papers. The English 111 class enabled me to have better participation in and out of class and allowed
When he searched and worked for information, he learned more than when it was simply handed to him. A few methods I intend to use this semester to create opportunities for myself involve organization and relationships. Sanders mentions that when he didn’t do the reading, his grade suffered and he did not learn what he needed, so I intend to write down everything (projects, homework, reading assignments) in my planner so I don’t miss deadlines. As long as I keep up with every assignment and all of the reading, I will be able to learn the content even if the professor does not teach as effectively as I would like. Sanders also mentions that he was not pleased with the professor and he complained that the professor did not teach well, but he does not suggest that he interacted with the professor outside of class. I will try to interact with the professors out of class to form better bonds. By maintaining a good relationship with the professors, I may be able to get more help or I may be told about more programs that can help me by supplementing my education or by giving me opportunities to apply that education.
I learned that I have a control issue and that my OCD gets in the way. I am not going to lie I contemplated several times about quitting online learning. I felt that I was not as smart as others are and when I would not get good feedback, I started to doubt my ability to go on. I am afraid to consult with my instructor for the fact of sounding less intelligent. When you got assignments that did not make sense that was because I was afraid to ask. What I enjoyed most about this class was getting a better understanding of what type of learner I am, and why I do the things I do. I never knew there was even a test that could tell you what type of learner you are. What I would change about this class is nothing. This class made you think about your learning. It did that plus some. My expectations were met because this class had a purpose to show each of us what kind of learners we are. It changed my mindset and it met my expectations
Your schedule will be as open as a barren desert. You will relieve all your stress by procrastinating. You don’t have to worry about the assignment until the day l before it is due, and this is a good thing. as you can zone out and focus on the activity at hand whether that’s browsing online, watching a movie, or hanging out with friends. The assignments will begin to haunt you at first; this will be a challenge that everyone faces, yet you need to realize that paper isn’t going to write itself, and neither are you; at least, not yet. That paper has a long life ahead of it before it needs to get turned in, why make it suffer? Speedily add to it the day before to ensure that no pain goes to the paper. In class, you don’t have to listen, but rather just act like you doing work. You can just look at the notes, that the teacher wrote when you get home. If you forget, it isn’t the end of the world you still have a day to study; the test is tomorrow. Procrastination is the gift that keeps giving. The more you procrastinate, the easier it will get, the more your grades will increase, and the more you’ll have fun. Yet, don’t get too carried away. You must procrastinate but still must complete your assignments. School is important, yet your activities outweigh the need for completion of assignments, so they can wait. What you need and want should come
During this course, I had the opportunity to watch several documentaries that enlightened men on different perspectives of cultural diversity. These documentaries contained a variety of different methods used to examine several cultural diversity issues within America. Racism, sexism, ageism, and social class were the main topics that were examined in these videos and documentaries. As part of the process, researchers creatively designed experiments that uncovered how people instinctively respond when it is not apparent that they are being watched. Reports such as these must be carefully crafted and presented in an objective manner. If critical steps are overlooked, this kind of research tactic can easily been interpreted as intrusive, dishonest, bias, or unethical. That might ultimately defeat the purpose and distract the viewer from understanding, and that may become counter-productive to the message the researcher is attempting to convey. All documentaries presented were necessary for us to gain a true consideration of the cultural diversity issues this country faces. Some documentaries contained the element of surprise by using hidden camera tactics. It is no secret that cameras have a tendency to change individuals’ attitudes, if they are conscious of the fact that they are being filmed. Though all of the video and documentaries were impactful, the two documentaries that had the most impact on my learning were:
For nearly all academic subjects, studying is the backbone support for one’s achievement in that field, and the very first thing that procrastinating will damage. When I was taking Advanced Placement (AP) Biology in 10th grade, I skipped a lot of reading. Even though I had always loved biology with a passion, and I was able to keep up with the enormous amount of information we had to memorize for the first few weeks of class, that passion was still overwhelmed by the amount of house chores, lengthy meetings for our academic competition team, and homework from my other
One of the most stressful aspects of high school and ultimately college is the ability (or lack thereof) to form good study habits. One may often hear the dramatic tale of a college student staying up all night in order to receive a good grade on his or her test the following morning. This student either completely fails the test, or does really well. These results depend on the students themselves and their ability to study in this manner. In this essay, I will compare and contrast fellow two of the most popular forms of studying—periodic and cramming—in an effort to allow high school students to effectively choose which form may best work for them.
Laboratory Assignment 2 was a lab designed to teach our teams how to use the Engineering Design Process. By using this process our team will learn how to formulate a real world answer for a problem found in this lab. The problem we needed to solve was what is the best vehicle for transporting root beer kegs with limited time and only a ¼ gallon of fuel.
From the unit of chemistry in grade ten science, the students have learned many things from different types of elements in the chart all the way to how each element impacts the daily life each student or even adult lives in. Some of the things I as a student have learned include how to draw the different elements in a bohr rutherford diagram, balancing chemical equations, types of chemical reactions, and even information about the different types of acids and bases. Although there were many other things in the unit, these four definately helped me learn about chemistry in a more in-depth way, as well as teaching me something very new since these were some things a few of the students had never done in the previous years. Learning this in the classroom has really opened my eyes to the world in which we live in today, many times I leave the house on a cold day and as I look upon the cold water becoming ice or even the snow falling down, I know how it is happening, why it is happening, and I can even picture the molecules solidifying as we had seen in class with many different diagrams.
A wise man should avoid falling behind on his responsibilities. Since the beginning of my high school career, my understanding of wisdom has changed to be more proactive with regards to order; wisdom means keeping track of everything one has to do, and making sure that it is done with time to spare, as to not allow any last-minute mistakes. Many all nighters of AP Chemistry have taught me the hard way the consequences of working without organization, costing me even more efficiency and rest. On the other hand , one must keep a balance between work and rest. Although one’s responsibilities should always take precedence over relaxation, it is important to know when to step away from one’s work
There has been much excitement about the latest science news in which a remote controlled airplane was flown using seawater fuel. The U.S. Navy created the fuel by taking carbon dioxide and hydrogen from seawater and combing them to create an organic compound called a hydrocarbon, which can be used for energy. I believe this is a really an amazing discovery since the earth has a lot of seawater to use as fuel. The oil, gas and coal we currently use as fuel will not last forever. The possible use of seawater as future source of fuel is just one of many applications of organic compounds, compounds which contain carbon molecules. Carbon is a unique element because it has the ability to form many compounds with itself and with other nonmetal elements like oxygen, hydrogen, nitrogen, sulfur and phosphorous. Carbon has four electrons on its outer shell, which leaves four electrons available to create covalent bonds with other carbon molecules and other various elements. Carbon’s unique properties include forming single, double and triple bonds which can combine with other atoms, forming chains which can combine with other elements and forming isomers, which are molecules that have similar composition as the original molecule but a different arrangement of its atoms. Organic compounds, which have been found naturally or have been made synthetically by chemists, make our life much easier. Some of the many applications of organic chemistry are in medicine, energy sources and industry.
For centuries, many scientists and researchers have pondered on the idea of combining two or more substances together to create something new. These explorations have led to the idea of what kind of reactions would occur when diverse elements are combined. This is a concept known as chemistry, a part of science that corresponds with how matter is created from different properties and the process it goes through to create a new substance. Chemistry is a scientific concept that is used in everyday life and is a crucial part in the development of new technology and substances that allow today’s quality of life. The use of chemistry branches off into many different routes, including medical related fields, agriculture, and even in weapons of
Staying up until the late hours of the night, scurrying to finish the assignment due by sunrise. Cursing everyone, and their mothers for not having enough time to complete the work necessary. Trucking through the assignment without a single iota of care or sense of quality control. These symptoms all fall under one diagnosis: procrastination. Procrastination is not just a problem, it's my problem. I have been a chronic procrastinator ever since my days in kindergarten, when I pushed off even the simplest of homework. Unfortunately, my homework has long evolved past the basic two plus two problems, and has moved on to derivatives and Thevenin's Theorem. Even though the difficulty has substantially increased, my motivation(or lack therof) to complete an assignment has stayed constant. According to Amy Novotney, author of “Procrastination or 'Intentional Delay',” “80 percent to 95 percent of collegiate students procrastinate, particularly when it comes to doing their coursework” (Novotney, 14). Procrastinating has led to lower grades in some of my classes, which could cause problems for me if I decide to further my education at other prestigious institutions. Even though resistance to procrastination is almost entirely futile, it's still a problem that I am willing to address, and hopefully fix.
