In the majority of sports, you’d do anything to avoid being on the sidelines, but that’s where cheerleaders thrive and where I have learned some of the most valuable life lessons. My academic and professional goals include earning a bachelor’s degree in neuroscience, attending medical school and obtaining a job in the medical field as a neurologist or neurosurgeon. The skills I’ve developed through cheerleading will be invaluable to me on this endeavor.
A successful medical setting is founded on collaboration and teamwork, skills essential for a cheerleading team. Similarly, in cheerleading you cannot stop an entire routine if you make a mistake, you must push through for your teammates that are depending on you to do your part. This perseverance must be paired with teamwork in order to be effective. The teamwork built during cheerleading is unrivaled by any sport, it is imperative that everyone is on the same page to flawlessly execute a routine. In healthcare, you are not the sole care provider, there is a team of professionals who need to work cohesively to provide excellent patient care. Building trust is also a necessary step. In cheerleading where this was achieved by always catching a flyer and providing a stable base, in the healthcare setting, it’s showing your patients and coworkers you will do what is needed of you every time. Because of cheerleading, I’ve come to realize that challenges produce the best result.
