Angela Lee Duckworth claimed grit to be the key to success. During an interview, she defined grit as “the disposition to pursue very long-term goals with passion and perseverance.” (qtd in Raz). Duckworth also mentioned that she wanted “to emphasize the stamina quality of grit. Grit is sticking with things over the long term and then working very hard at it.” (qtd in Raz). “For the last 11 years, Angela Lee Duckworth of the University of Pennsylvania has conducted groundbreaking studies on grit -- the quality that enables individuals to work hard and stick to their long-term passions and goals.” (Perkins-Gough). Without determination my brother and I would not be successful. He is currently a tennis player for Our Lady of the Lake University. During his final year in high school, he had been searching for universities nearby that would give him the opportunity to play for their tennis team. He drove to a town an hour away from our hometown everyday just to train with a specialized coach. He remained dedicated throughout the year, until the colleges he is currently at allowed him to be a part of the tennis team. Although we both are determined, mine is more focused on academics. At the end of my sophomore year, I had discovered that I was not in the top three of my class. I worked intensely in each class, devoting my time specifically to my studies. My brother and I were both raised to be open to new ideas. Considering that we focused on having an open mindset, we would not have been as successful if it was not for the assistance provided by others. An example of this would be that his mindset open to what his college professors say during lectures in order to complete his courses and graduate soon. As I mentioned before, he is currently a tennis play for a university. He must pay attention to specific instructions given to him by his coach if he plans to remain on the team for his final year in college. As for myself, I must listen as to what my peers suggest for student council in order to allow our final decisions successful.
