Without determination my brother and I would not be successful. He is currently a tennis player for Our Lady of the Lake University. During his final year in high school, he had been searching for universities nearby that would give him the opportunity to play for their tennis team. He drove to a town an hour away from our hometown everyday just to train with a specialized coach. He remained dedicated throughout the year, until the colleges he is currently at allowed him to be a part of the tennis team. Although we both are determined, mine is more focused on academics. At the end of my sophomore year, I had discovered that I was not in the top three of my class. I worked intensely in each class, devoting my time specifically to my studies. My brother and I were both raised to be open to new ideas. Considering that we focused on having an open mindset, we would not have been as successful if it was not for the assistance provided by others. An example of this would be that his mindset open to what his college professors say during lectures in order to complete his courses and graduate soon. In the book True Grit by Charles Portis, Mattie Ross is a four-teen year old girl who sets off to find and kill Tom Chaney for the murder and robbing of her father. She hires a Marshal Rooster Cogburn who agrees to find and kill him for a price of 50 dollars. Before they leave Mattie meets a man named LaBoeuf, a Texas Ranger set out on the mission of capturing Tom Chaney for the murder of the Senator and his dog. Mattie Ross doesn’t want his help, she knows that LaBoeuf will try to take him back to Texas and have him hung, but that’s not what she wants she wants him to be responsible for her father’s death and be killed on the spot or hung in her town. Rooster Cogburn is the definition of “True Grit” opposed to Tom Chaney the coward that kills an unarmed man and robs him. He lacks every trait that “Grit” is supposed to be. There are many crucial elements college students must have in order to obtain success. The most valuable aspect of self-improvement for a college student to have starts with grit. Grit can be obtained through keeping one’s goals in mind, sticking to a schedule, and staying resilient to animosity. Grit is defined as using perseverance and passion for the goals one has. Someone with grit has courage, resolve and a strong character. Try to picture a person clenching their teeth while faced with a difficult tack, yet they conquer it anyway.

In pages 49-104 of How Children Succeed, Tough continues to assert on the importance of non-cognitive abilities as predictors to success. He explicates on the role of motivation and grit, and how these character traits will lead to academic success. Throughout the readings, Tough introduces and substantiates his assertions with the studies of the M&M experiment, coding- speed test, and Duckworth’s Grit Scale. While I do agree with Tough analysis for the significance and positive outcomes associated with motivation and grit, I do not in particular agree with his conclusions on the M&M experiment. In essence, I agree with Tough that development in character is crucial for short and long term success. However, I also believe his argument to lean towards the theoretical aspect, and does not provide the reader the tools for a heuristic approach to modify or refine the listed traits.
There are lots of examples of this in the book but here is a good example from Mawi when he ran track. “That summer, I would run at least six days a week and lift weights every other day. I did it, working during the day and training at night. Again, my hard work paid big dividends … I earned all-conference honors.” (115). Mawi joined the high school track and field team. During his sophomore and junior years, Mawi only made marginal progress. He wanted to change that. Mawi knew from his father that if you work hard, you will succeed. As you can see by this quote, Mawi did as his father said and no doubt, he succeeded in getting all-conference honors. Persisting is not just in sports, however, Mawi also worked hard at school. He recalls, “I stayed up night after night, rereading the chapters and reviewing my notes. I would get home from sports at 6 p.m., eat, help out around the house, and study until midnight. Then I would get up at 6 a.m. and do it all over again. The hard work paid off. I often got the highest grade in the class.” (112). As you can see, Mawi also worked hard at school. Mawi took an advanced us history class. He knew that by working hard and persisting, he could get the highest grade in the class. Mawi spent 6 hours studying and reviewing his work. He was committed to earning the highest grade in his class and his hard work paid off. Working hard and persisting is a valuable lesson to learn because it produces positive results. I decided that I wanted to play a sport, I chose volleyball. Most of my friends played the sport so it wasn't hard for me to adjust and make new friends. Becoming a student athlete was a big adjustment for me, I could no longer float through my classes but I need to excel. And that's exactly what I did. For the first time in my high school career I made not only honor roll, but principal’s honor roll. For the first time my mom was proud of my report card, that made me even more proud. From then on I knew I wanted nothing less than what I earned, good grades and a proud family. From my decision to chose to become a student athlete not only make me work harder but, be great at everything I put my mind to. I had motivation to stay successful, to stay eligible. Many of my goals have been met through my hard work and dedication through my mother's constant pressure to do well in school. To give a clear example of what I mean, there was the time that I got Principal's Honor Roll. In order to get Principal’s Honor Roll I had to work very hard and maintain a G.P.A of 4.0 or above with no U’s or fails. Many times, I had to sacrifice going to parties, hanging out with friends to do my homework just to study for a test. Many times, I had to stay up very late to finish an assignment or study. My hard work allowed me to meet my goal of getting Honor Roll. If I didn’t work hard and dedicated myself into pursuing to get Principal’s Honor Roll I would have probably never got it. This has impacted me in a very positive way because I know that in order to obtain what I want I have to work hard, dedicate myself, and commit myself to that goal. My grades are another great example of my hard work and dedication. If I didn’t work hard to obtain all A’s , I would have probably never have got a 4.0 G.P.A. in my report card and would not get the Principal’s Honor Roll award.
