Mark Bradford: From “Sissy” to Sculptor Mark Bradford grew up in the southern part of Los Angeles, California where he was basically raised in his mother’s Beauty shop. Around age 11, the family relocated to a “white neighborhood,” but according to Bradford, this didn't effect his character or confidence because to him, everyone was the same. His mother started another beauty shop in Santa Monica, the one that he would later use to pay his way through art school. He spent much of his time styling wigs and washing hair; this sparked a creative impulse inside young Bradford that would last him a lifetime. Bradford’s intense past of dealing with not only being black in an essentially white neighborhood, but being called a “sissy” and “too sensitive,”
