(Pettee Par 5). Soon after Cujo is bitten, Vic and Donna’s son Tad begins to see a monster in his closet. The monster tells Tad that he has killed and ate some people, and Tad could be next. During the book it switches to Cujos point of view and relates to his physical pain by saying his muscles ached, and he has a strong desire to kill (Sova 120). While Vic is away on a business trip Donna needs work on her car. She drives out to the nearest local mechanic, Joe Camber with her son Tad. When Donna arrives she finds Joe Camber and his neighbor Gary Pervier killed in Pervier’s home by the Saint Bernard Cujo. Donna’s car breaks down in Joe Cambers front yard, and leaves Donna and her son stranded with the man killing rabid dog (Pettee Par 6). For three days they are trapped in her blistering hot car (Par 7). The suspense builds with each kill.until Cujo turns his attention tos Donna and Tad trapped in their car.
Donna struggles to fight off the rabid dog and keep her son alive for two full days. Then she decides to escape and run for the house (Sova 120). A challenged book is an attempt to remove books because of a person, or group of people (“Stephen King” Par 2). Banning is the removal of those books that were challenged (Par 2). Books are typically challenged to protect others that is, like younger children, but not all challenged books are successful (Par 3). 14). Banning books happen in many countries around the world. The most common reasoning for banning books is because of religion, political, social or sexual grounds (11). For one week in September libraries and bookstores have the freedom to display any banned book, its known as “Banned Book Week” (56). Books have been banned for as long as they have been written. In 360 B.C., Pluto was the first to think of the idea of banning books (Mullally Par 2). Around 1650 a religious pamphlet by William Pynchon was taken by Puritan authorities in Massachusetts. The books was burned by the public executioner in the Boston market place. The incident is the first book-banning In America (Par 5). A while later, in 1872 Anthony Comstock was a pioneer of modern American censorship. By the time of 1873 he was using slogans like “Moralls, not art literature”. He eventually convinced congress to pass a law known as “Comstock Law” which banned the mailings that were “lewd, indecent, filthy or obscene”. Between 1874 and 1915 a special agent of the U.S. Post Office estimated to have confiscated 120 tons of printed works. That special agent had 3,500 people prosecuted but only 350 were convicted (Par 6.) The American Library Association documented that 6,000 books were challenged between the year of 1990 and 2000 (Par 8). A number of Stephen King’s books were banned because of language, sex scenes, and violence (Dawn B. 121). 1991 in Peru, Indiana a school superintendent recommended that only three of his novels be available with parents’ permission (Herbert N. 197). The school board voted 5 to 1 to completely ban Cujo, Dead zone, and Christine. A school in Portland received complaints about the book Cujo because of profanity and sexual content (198). The complaining parent said she didn’t want her son reading King’s books after reading portions of Cujo (Herbert N. 198). In April 1992 there was a request to remove all books of Stephen King from libraries. Cujo was banned in 1984 and 1985 by schools in Alabama, Mississippi, New York, and California (Daniel Par 2). Always pushing the limits, Stephen King made a mark of the literary scene with his violent and dark tales such as Cujo. Pushing boundaries helped King revolutionized the horror genre. Not being afraid to take risk can payoff in the end.

Banning and challenging books is trying to keep a certain book away from an audience due to sexual content, going against religious beliefs, language and vulgarity, violence, drugs, self-harm, racism, occult/satanic views, promoting gangs, and going against community standards. An argument from someone who believes books should not be banned is that it is important for the age group to learn about certain content and material as they grow up. First off, banning a book violates the Freedom of Speech, which is a part of the First Amendment. The First Amendment allows the people to have their thoughts and speech to be protected. If a book is banned, you are essentially prohibiting the exercise of free speech, which strangely contradicts the First Amendment. In The Catcher in the Rye, we the readers can see that J.D. Salinger supports the idea of Freedom of Speech with the statement, "And if the boy digresses at all, you 're supposed to yell 'Digression! ' at him as fast as you can. It just about drove me crazy. I got an F in it" (98). Utilizing the Freedom of Speech, the boy can say no to the teacher that forced him to read out loud in class. By banning the book, you are also violating the ideals for Freedom of Expression, which is also a part of the First Amendment. According to the Bill of Rights, the main concept of Freedom of Expression is that we individuals have the right to hold our own opinions without the consent of others (Bill Of Rights of the United States of America). J.D. Salinger also supports the ideals for Freedom of Expression with the quote, "In the first place, I

The censorship of books is a division of censorship that, apart from Internet censorship, receives the most publicity. Banning books is the most popular form of such censorship. Many banned books are literary classics, such as The Catcher in the Rye, by J.D. Salinger, which was listed as the number 6 most challenged or banned book in a list compiled by the American Civil Liberties Union in 1997.
The most debatable and controversial form of censorship today is the banning of books in school libraries. Banning books that educate students is wrong and selfish. Censorship of books in school libraries is neither uncommon nor an issue of the past. Books with artistic and cultural worth are still challenged constantly by those who want to control what others read. The roots of bigotry and illiteracy that fuel efforts to censor books and free expression are unacceptable and unconditional. Censoring school books in libraries can often lead to censorship of our basic freedoms guaranteed in the First Amendment. In some cases, a minority ends up dictating the majority in censorship cases. To be told what is permissible reading material and what is not is a direct violation of the First Amendment of the Constitution.
Brinkley describes a few actions that can lead to the censoring of a book in a school or school system: An expression of concern is simply a question about the material with overtones of disapproval; an oral complaint is an oral challenge to the contents of a work; a written complaint is a formal written challenge to the school about the contents of a work; and a public attack is a public statement challenging the contents of a work that is made outside of the school, usually to the media to gain support for further action (1999). Brinkley also points out an important difference between selection and censorship: Selection is the act of carefully choosing works for an English course that will be age-appropriate, meaningful, and fulfill objectives, while censorship is the act of excluding works that some con...
