The novel, A Long Walk to Water is a written by Linda Sue Park where it tells the story of the “Lost Boys of Sudan,” who are refugees who have fled from their villages during the Second Sudanese Civil War, whereas in the 1980s. Each boy traveled gruesome walks and threaded on survival, where the danger of both nature and violent human-works threatened with danger. But the main character of the story, Salva Dut was one of those “Lost Boys” who is based on a real-person, and have strikingly survived through all the tough trials of the war, to getting stung by bees for food to walking for several months to arrive at a refugee camp. But there were certain factors that made survival possible for Salva and go through the challenges of the war. One of the factors that have created his survival possible is because of his friends and family. Marial, a boy around Salva’s age was his friend who have kept him accompanied and led him cheered up during the journey at the time. Mentioned on page 30 through 31, “I can’t go to another country, Salva thought. If I do, my family will never find me…. Marial put his arms round Salva’s shoulders. He …show more content…
seemed to know what Salva was thinking, for he said ‘It doesn’t matter. Don’t you know that if we keep walking east, we’ll go all the way around the world and come right back here to Sudan? That’s when we’ll find our families!’ Salva had to laugh. They were both laughing as they started walking again, their strides matching perfectly.” Salva was worried about moving to Ethiopia, as he thought heading there would let his family to never find him. But Marial seemed to understand and prodded him back to happiness by telling him of finding is family again after the travel. Furthermore, the second factor that have created his survival possible is because of the resources around him.
As mentioned on pages 24 through 28, “‘The bird. The one I was listening to. He led me right here.’” Buksa’s smile was even bigger now. ‘You see that?’ He pointed up at the branches of the tree. ‘Beehive. A fine. large one.’ Salva hurried off to call the rest of the group. He had heard of this, that the Jur-chol could follow the call of the bird called the honey guide! But he had never seen it done before. Honey! This night, they would feast!” Thanks to Buksa; a young man who walked among the group of people who was trying to avoid war, have discovered a honey guide, who has led themselves into a beehive. With that bird and the hive, the people can feast on the honey, finally satisfying their hunger from the everlasting
walks. Thereby, the last factor that have created Salva’s survival possible is because of his perseverance. Mentioned multiple times on page 72; “I am alone now. I am all that is left of my family. His father gave him treats... His mother was ready with food and milk, and stroked Salva’s head with a soft touch. His siblings, he looked after them, played, and laughed after them. But, he would never see them again. How can I go on without them? But how can I not go one? They would want me to survive… to grow up and make something of my life… to honor their memories.” Salva thinks back to his family, and how he will never see them ever again, and that he is the only one who is seeming to live. He thinks that how he will ever go on before remembering how he can’t not go on. His family would want him to live and thrive, honor their memories, and make something of himself. So on pages 72 to 73; “‘Do you see that group of bushes? You need only to walk as far as those bushes….’ Uncle had helped him get through the desert that way, bit by bit, one step at a time… I need only to get through the rest of this day, he told himself.” Salva thought of how Uncle encouraged him to go on back where he had to go through the first day of the desert, and had himself get through the lift at camp in the same way… Which he did for six years. For all of his troubles that have taken, Salva have survived the trials of the war. To getting stung by bees for food to walking for several months to arrive at a refugee camp. Salva was a “Lost Boy,” a group of refugees who fled violence from the Second Sudanese Civil War, walking gruesome walks, reaching out to survival, as tragedies created both by nature and human-works nipping at their heels. But there were factors that have make survival possible for Salva Dut, and edges him closer to the man he is known today.

Summer at Devon is easygoing as teachers mellow out and the rule enforcement dwindles, such carefree behavior represents childhood; Devon’s winter session is ultimately more strict and level, emphasizing the mood in adulthood. As the sun shines bright, tension unravels and everyone at Devon loosens up including the teachers as Gene explains on page 23, “Now on these clear June days in New Hampshire they appeared to uncoil, they seemed to believe that we were with them about half of the time, and only spent the other half trying to makes fools of them.” The summer days are filled with happy-go-lucky antics that seem to come with no serious consequence; exactly how a young child would spend everyday of his life as a youthful boy. There is no

The book, "Long Walk to Water" tells the journey of refugee boy in Southern Sudan, 1985, named Salva. It all started on that unfortunate day that he began his walk. Salva was at school when the war had reached his village. Successfully he fled from the school into the bushes before being spotted. From there he traveled with a Dinka group, heading east. During most of his walk he felt very lonely, that is until he met Marial, who soon became his friend. Soon after that Salva reunites his uncle and later becomes the leader of the traveling group. Salva promised himself that he would stay alive for his family, so he finds a way to get food in the refugee camp, so that he could make it to America alive. In the text, Park writes, “ No one shared anything with him, neither food nor company. Uncle had always share the animals and birds he shot with everyone in the group. But it seemed they had all forgotten that, for now Salva had to beg for scraps, which were given grudgingly. The way they treated him made Salva feel stronger still. There is no one left to help me. They think I am useless...They are wrong, and I will prove it” ( Park, P.66). This evidence proves that Salva had to beg for food so that he wouldn't die of starvation. Therefore this helped Salva survive by allowing him to realize he was to take care of himself now, because he has no one to hunt a full meal for him anymore. So now Salva knows to get food he has to beg. Overall, Salva got food and survived by begging for food, and believing in himself that he will survive on his

A few years ago, my uncle Jack passed away from a heart condition at age 80. I was crying through the funeral, I was feeling sad and hopeless that I would loose someone else close to me again, but what I learned in the end was that I had love, hope and plenty of friends to comfort me in my struggles. I know I will be ok when I had these things in my life, and the reason is that I can count on them to help me. I get love from my family, hope that he is in a better place and friendship to support me in what I was going through. In Khaled Hosseini’s novel A Thousand Splendid Suns, the author explains two characters Laila and Mariam that have been through the struggles and have the same feelings as I do. Love, hope, and friendship. Not to mention
Not his death but the deaths of his loved ones. “Marial was gone, vanished into the night,” (40)and also “As S alva watched one the men aimed his gun at uncle, three shots rang out,”(63) are two examples of deaths he has grieved through. It is impossible to tell how many lost boys’ lives were lost traveling to the new camp. Salva has also gone through abandonment, one example is when the adults in the group (the one before Uncle died) kind of just leave him to fight for himself. This example works because they would not give him any resources they found because they thought he was a burden to the group. Another example is when the first group left him while he was asleep. “Why had they without waking him?”

In his story “On the Rainy River” Tim O’Brien is explaining to us how he had to chose to either go to war or stay at his home. He had to make a big decision about if he really wanted to go to Vietnam War. Some things that stand out about the main character is that he is a very brave person and will give up his body to do what is right. While reading this I can see that the main character is very powerful and very unafraid of certain things. At the same time he also was afraid of certain things because he does not believe in the war. He doesn’t necessarily believe in the war he really just doesn’t support it at all. Even though he really doesn’t support this he still ends up going because it’s in his religious to do things like that. Another
Another survival factor that helped Slava’s in the novel were refugee camps and Michael. Refugee camps were one of the main survival factors for Salva because, if he wasn’t there that time at the camp, he would die and not able to go to America. Also Michael was his survival factor too, because if Salva didn’t meet Michael at the Kukama camps, he would not have been able to learn English and have never been able to go to American. According to the text,’’ one day after the morning meal, Michael spoke to Salva.’’ You seem interested in learning English.’’ he said. ‘’ How you like to learn to read?’’ The lessons began that every scrap of paper… So Salva learned two thing from Michael how to read and play volleyball’’. Salva is really interested
