Over the second half of Semester One of 2016, I have been privileged to work as an Intern at Channel 31. In which time, whilst completing other studies, I have been exposed to various areas of the workplace of a functioning radio station. While mostly dealing in Ingest, the normalising and filing of footage for broadcast, I also dealt in scheduling, production and editing. In this Internship, currently eight weeks in, I have revealed to myself habits and a nature of approaching work I had not experienced previously, however some old tendencies stalled workflow slightly from time to time. As I mostly dealt with SYN’s youth music program, ‘1700’, most of my experience of community television producers comes from there. As community television is often, if not always, volunteer based, the role of a community television producer mostly revolves around the recruitment and upkeep of crew, talent, and other essential personnel. However, once the crew is tied down the producer can take on many different facets of the production of the television production. This can very from, vision switching, directing, camera operating, or even acting as talent, presenting the program on any given day.
‘Geelong District Football League’, a show on Channel 31 that commentates on the weekly footy news in a footy show style. The producer for this show, to my knowledge, acts as camera operator, writer, editor, as well as takes on the responsibility of submitting to Channel 31 each week for broadcast. It is not uncommon to see this ‘one-man-band’ style of television around Channel 31, as even on 1700, the floor manager often has two camera’s locked off, while he or she operates a third.
