Changes in Technology, Impact on Media, and Media’s Impact on Society
Introduction
Technology has certainly been changing over the years. In recent years, changes in technology changes have increase at an exponential rate. Among the most instrumental changes in technology are those that have enabled better service provision by multimedia service providers. This work explores technological changes in migration from analog to digital television transmission and changes in internet technology.
Changes from Analogue to Digital Transmission
Traditional broadcasting method relied heavily on analogue transmission. At the inception, television transmission was monochromatic but later changes to color transmission invigorated television transmission. Analogue transmission offered limited bandwidth for transmission. This meant that only a handful of television station could be hosted in analogue transmission medium. However, the digital platform came with a host of advantages. To start with, the bandwidth is large enough to host innumerable number of stations making it possible to host large and small broadcasting stations. Initially technology provided a monopolistic programming, which has since changed paving way for other broadcasting stations to emerge. Digital platform provides an opportunity to provide high definition programming.
The media has adopted this mode of programming making it possible to manipulate the viewer’s center of interest by blurring some regions and emphasizing others, as they deem appropriate. For instance, during the last presidential election, media critics were up in arms criticizing subjective campaign coverage. Social media has enabled increased connectivity and coverage through creation of mobile applications that enable users to view content from their mobile devices. Communities in remote areas are able to stay in touch with current trends through social media. The social media is also being used to share major occurrences. For instance, following major tsunamis, tornadoes, or earthquakes, people have been able to reunite with their loved ones through social media.
Conclusion
In conclusion, it is clear that technological advancement affects the way media content is packaged and transmitted. In some case, these developments have made it possible for media houses to use subjective emphasis on its content leading to social uproar. On the other hand, social media content is emerging to be highly unpredictable and increasingly helpful on various fronts.
