With social media being the world’s distributor of information, it can be a hassle. In times of emergency, a person can instantly dial 9-1-1 or send a silent SMS. Cell phones have given us the power to feel secure and protected, but they can only do so much. While phone companies advertise their plans, they are also trying to protect phones and the shared data through each app. Data can be distributed to another person without the user knowing, which is why companies have created security measures within each cell phone to make sure nothing is lost or stolen from the original user.
Now if social media were to automatically edit each person’s comments and instantly make them kinder, it would still spread a wrong message, as some people may still take it the wrong way. If you post one wrong comment, it goes viral and haunts you forever. The negativity that comes with social media has brought so much chaos and even fatalities. The internet can be a happy and kind place or a very dangerous, dark place. It is pretty scary to think what would happen if the whole world only used the internet, and nothing else…
I have not gone two days without social media for the last ten years. Last week, however, I finally disconnected from everything except phone calls for 36 hours. It was an out of body experience; I was on an emotional roller coaster of perpetual emptiness and anxiety mixed with a sublime relaxation I had only felt before when juice fasting. After the initial shock and habitual glances at a blank phone, I generally was calm and at peace. Through the experience, I gained a new perspective on mobile phones and I now see why many people favor the dystopian view of social media usage. While I once thought that people just loved to be cynical, I see how technology is drastically warping our lives and changing human interaction. By talking face-to-face

The advancements in today’s cell phone technology is very complex and made to be efficient for their owners, allowing them to surf the net and IM message people instantly. Cellphones in particular have developed very fast in the past 15 years. From my childhood, cell phones have evolved from the old school Nokia bricks that allowed texts, calls, and simple graphic games, to todays I-Phones that have higher computable capabilities than some computers. In the United States alone, there is an estimated population of around 297 million people, and 197 million people are subscribed to cell phone companies (Starr). With so many people in today’s society with so much power and opportunity in the palm of their hands, we shouldn’t forget that “With great power comes great responsibility” –Voltaire.

Imagine trying to function properly on four hours or less of sleep each night. Imagine a straight “A” student who just received their first “F” on a report card. Imagine sitting in sixth period anxiously watching the clock tick, waiting to bolt out of class to go home and curl up in front a seventeen inch PC screen to log on. Imagine personal insecurities escalating to the point where ending life seems like a conceivable option of escape from the cruel reality of the world. These are only a few hazardous effects that some encounter using social networking sites such as Facebook, Myspace, and Twitter. Many teens use these websites daily, hourly, and in some severe cases, even minutely. A 2009 Compete.com study ranked Facebook the most-used social networking service by worldwide monthly active users. Because the public is more apt to be exposed to the positive, fun side of social media, many users are completely oblivious to the numerous dangers that lurk within the networks’ pages.
