The Education system of England and Wales underwent a number of important changes since 1944. This essay seeks to concentrate on these major changes describing the rationale and impact they had on the British education system. The essay will commence by focusing on the1944 Education Act, as it was "the most important piece of educational legislation since 1902" (Gosden, 1983:3). There was a great need for this Act, because the Second World War caused considerable disruption to the educational system. As Dunford and Sharp point out, "evacuation, staff shortages and suspension of building programmes all created their own problems. War also brought important changes in social attitudes, and [...] there was a determination for a better future" (Dunford and Sharp, 1990:17). Therefore there was a need to remodel the current education system "in order to ensure that every child would go to a secondary school" (Gosden, 1983:1). Planning for reconstruction of education culminated in the Education Act of 1944, which is also known as the Butler Act. The 1944 Act abolished the Board of Education replacing it with a central authority with its own Ministry of Education. The independence of Local Education Authorities (LEAs) was therefore under the control and direction of the Minister, as "the central government decided national policy while LEAs were to provide the schools" (Gosden, 1983:3). As a result of these changes, "there was more unity and standardisation in the national education service" (Dunford and Sharp, 1990:18). Although there are many debates still taking place today on how the education system needs improving or re-addressing, the fact remains that the education acts focused on in this essay, greatly impacted and improved the British education system in terms of the quality of education and equality for pupils. Mandela’s says that education is very powerful, you can use education to change the world or your life. This means that education is important in life and we all need a good education to succeed in life. In our society education is failing because schools demand too much for a great career. For example, schools take too much time to graduate and after we finish school there is no guaranteed employment. Therefore, students are dropping out of school and are going to the workforce or military. We could make education better for students
The educational quality of someone living in the British Empire is decided the day that baby enters the world. A child living in the British Empire during the nineteenth century had little say in their education. Parents directed the education of their children and different people had very different views on education. The affluent members of English society highly regarded education and made sure their children got the best possible education money had to offer. The working class of England was often forced by the government to send their children to school. They felt that their children’s time would be better spent working a factory. The Quakers on the other hand, had a very different approach to education. the native children in the empire had their own unique experience. The different views on education led to an empire with several different types of educational institutes that prepared children in a variety of ways for adulthood. Some children’s training was directly aimed at preparing them for their future job while others taught them skills that they might never use. Due to the diversity in educational training, children had very different experiences. Some children had positive experiences with education while others remembered their education bitterly. Overall, the education in the British Empire was not uniform. The education of privileged children differed greatly from that of Quaker children in the empire and that was dissimilar to the education of native children in missionary schools, the only unifying factor was that the children were sent away for school.
Labaree discusses how the United State’s education is in a school syndrome, as people in America want schools to teach society’s ideals as well as let people express their individuality. These two demands are polar opposites that cannot be achieved. As the focus goes towards balancing these in hopes of improving society as a whole, the bettering of actual student learning is put on pause. Labaree talks about the beginning of education reform, in the 19th century, being the most successful in developing society; however, as education reform continued throughout time, its effectiveness wore off. He then addresses how the desire for education reform is more about improving society than it is about learning. He finishes his argument by providing possible solutions to fixing this problem, but states that fixing this problem will never happen because no one is willing to give up both demands. Overall, Labaree goes in wonderful detail explaining the problems of education reform. What made me choose this article was that he addressed the desire that people have on school systems in promoting both society normality and individuality. This correlates well with my topic in whether public school systems promote conformist ideals or individuality.
The issue of equality in education is not a new problem. In 1787, our federal government required all territories petitioning for statehood to provide free education for all citizens. As part of this requirement, every state constitution included, “an education clause, which typically called for a “thorough and efficient” or “uniform” system of public schools” (School Funding 6). As we take a look at two different essays by two different authors’ John Gatto and Alfie Kohn, both highlight what’s wrong within our educational system in today’s society. As John Gatto explores the concept if schools are really as necessary as they’re made out to be; Alfie Kohn analyzes the non-importance of letter grades within our schools. Although both essays are fairly different, they still pose some similarities in relation to the educational system in today’s society.

Illich argued that whilst schools have become recognised as the institution which specialises in education, he saw the role of schools as a tool of social control, spreading existing political ideologies and preserving the status quo of society (1971). Ideology was maintained through teachers who took on a powerful role, dictating how and what was taught to their students. It was common belief that education could only be supplied by a properly qualified person (1971). This attitude is what Illich used to support his theory that schools have become bureaucratised. To further this notion, Illich made a distinct difference between schooling and learning. Schooling was related to bureaucracy and teaching, and learning occurred independent of the former (1971). This idea is easily understood if one considers where most of their learning occurs – outside of school, during daily life experiences and encounters with other people.
