School Governors – they are a team of usually around 10 – 12 people who are all volunteers and they have the ultimate responsibility for the running of the school. A wide variety of people
make up the governing body, but it should always have at least 1 parent governor, 1 staff governor
(in addition to the Head Teacher) and in some schools there could also be a governor from the
support staff. The Local Authority appoints a Local Authority governor and also a Community
Governor is appointed who is usually someone who works (or lives) in the local community. The
Head Teacher and Senior Manager Team work closely with governors although governors may not
be in school on a daily basis.

However, in secondary schools the SMT may also have subject leaders as part of the team. The SMT meets regularly (weekly or more) and make decisions around any issues affecting the school, also the day to day running of the school.
