Throughout the writing process of an essay, a writer encounters a wide diversity of challenges and things that are easy. Writing a rhetorical essay is the same way. Every writer is different. Some have the ability to elaborate on simple ideas to give their papers more detail and thoroughly explain the idea. Other writers can find this as a challenge, which can cause their papers to not reach the minimum requirement needed for the prompt. While writing my rhetorical essay I experienced various challenges and learned a lot. One of the challenges I experienced was being able to describe in my own words what I thought the author’s reason of including certain ideas their text. The text was written in a different time period. Due to this, ideas can be interpreted many different ways. While writing my rhetorical essay, my opinion did not change. In fact, once I delved deeper into the text, it reinforced the argument I was making. Throughout the text I was able to find multiple examples to help support my claim and possibly convince someone that my stance was valid. The most effective way to gauge yourself as a rhetor and a writer is by attempting to write a paper using rhetorical concepts or writing in general. This paper was my first time writing a rhetorical essay. I feel that I have a lot of improvement ahead of myself. Rhetoric can be challenging at times. While writing this paper I learned that once I get started writing I can keep it going. So, it is not good for me to stop working on a paper then picking it back up at a later time. Rhetorical Analysis Writers always write in different styles in order to attract readers. Every piece of writing has different types of rhetorical methods. For example, “If Technology Is Making Us Stupid, It’s Not Technology’s Fault,” there are different types of techniques used to appeal to writers. In parts of the essay it has logic which is known for using logos. The writer uses very strong emotions which is known as pathos.
Authors use rhetorical strategies to express themes in their writing. Different rhetorical strategies help convey different themes with varying degrees of effectiveness. One way to measure the effectiveness is to rhetorical analyze two pieces of writing to each other and see which is best.
Imagine a society where education isn’t entirely dependent upon the merits of one’s personal knowledge. Where the learning environment is utilized for personal development and growth rather than competition and separation. A sanctuary composed of unity and equity among peers. A place where college isn’t the only goal, but rather personal identity and initiative are established along the way. Such a society, fully embodies Baldwin’s ideology regarding education, and the prejudices therein. In his speech, “A Talk to Teachers” Baldwin delivers a compelling argument, in which he criticizes the problems and prejudices within the educational system in his day. However, through his sagacious philosophies and eye-opening opinions, Baldwin manifests the cruel, unspoken truth within his speech, that the hindrances and prejudices experienced in his day are still existent in 2016.
The American diet is becoming extremely harmful to the health of especially children. The new generation has different trends in regard to health compared to those of perhaps their parents. In the documentary Fed Up, Soechtig uses data and statistics, as well as narratives of emotional events to highlight the long run issues with American’s poor diet and also to criticize the food industry. Introduction Teachers have become gateway keepers to providing education to students. Over the span of several years, teachers have been criticized for being unprepared, unable to adapt to different learning styles, and are increasing the number of students who aren’t learning. With this achievement gap increasing, it brings up the idea of what the education system is doing wrong and what improvements it needs to make. Upon the completion of my high school career I was faced with the sudden realization that I was growing up and on the verge of becoming independent. A few months prior, I had applied to Montana State and received my acceptance letter. The future was before me and my ambitions were truly limitless. The first thing one must consider is whether there is any merit in writing or rhetoric. According to Socrates, speech writing is not bad. The only way it can ever be bad is if it is not done well. Therefore, one must consider what is necessary for writing well. Socrates proposes that in order to write well, one must know what is true about his subject. However, Phaedrus points out that perhaps all that is necessary to be seen as a good writer is to know what the people believe to be right about that subject and then write about it as they view it. However, Socrates shows that this is erroneous because then one can persuade others that wrong is right, and as a result rhetoric would have poor results. Instead, Socrates proposes that correct rhetoric is a tool through which knowledge is used to expertly persuade others. However, rhetoric can also be seen as, not a form of art, rather a talent. If it is thus seen, then in order to become an expert in it one must be born with the talent. Even if rhetoric were only a talent, there are steps to improve and build on it. Previous to this course, I had never been exposed to rhetoric, nor did I understand rhetoric and its influence the first time it was introduced to me. In addition to having limited exposure to rhetoric, this was my first real writing assignment for an AP course. The process I used to complete this essay is far different from the process I’ve developed throughout this school year. I allowed my anxiety to override my brain, resulting in me stressing myself throughout the whole writing process. Rather than accepting that I am good enough for an AP course, I doubted my writing skills and drove myself crazy by second-guessing every word and phrase I typed. I relentlessly researched rhetoric, vocabulary, and other writing knowledge, which would be beneficial for the future, but I let all of the writing skills I had not yet acquired prevent me from using the skills I did have to write a great essay. Now, I type everything I have to say about the essay topic and then review my work only fixing what needs to be fixed. At this point in time I had difficulty quoting text; I had to learn how to stop drop quoting and when to use brackets, commas, and ellipses. Looking back on this essay, I wish I had taken notes on the text, as it would have made analyzing structure far easier. Within in my analysis, I focused on allusion, anaphora, and metaphor due to being most familiar to them and seeing the most examples in it. I spent hours checking quotes, grammar, and if my words jumbled as they frequently do. This assignment was good practice for how to write a rhetorical analysis.
