Introduction
In this module I would briefly discuss the challenges associated with teaching in Emergency Medicine (EM), how these challenges influences my approach to teaching in EM. I would describe what teaching and learning methods I adapted to in EM to address the learning outcomes of the trainee doctors. Finally I would aim to reflect on the approach and methods used and my role in the process.
Challenges in EM
EM is highly attractive specialty. Internationally, EM residencies rank among the top few specialties attracting junior doctors of the highest calibre in large numbers (College of Emergency Medicine EM Taskforce interim report 2012).
On the other hand, College of emergency medicine highlighted concerns about junior doctors EM training in its 2012 annual report to the GMC stating continuing service pressures is reducing the amount of time trainers can dedicate to delivering training. Also, medical educators have budgetary constraints to improve the quality of medical education and the safety of medical care. (Vozenilek, Huff, Reznek, & Gordon, 2004)
Even though EM is a highly attractive specialty, according to my experiences, the service pressures and budgetary constraints are real and I feel that junior doctors in EM don’t get structured and supervised teaching on the shop floor. We have teaching programme for junior doctors where once a week they get lectures on various topics covering their curriculum. This type of traditional teaching in the form of lectures or skill stations in the emergency department is particularly unsatisfying and unproductive for adult learners. (Kilroy, 2004)

Summary
There are various challenges facing teaching in Emergency Department from service delivery to budgetary constraints. Approach and teaching method can varies with learner, teacher and circumstances, but small group teaching type with use of clinical problems seem to be effective and liked by learners. On reflection and personal development level, feedback process is important and often been given less importance as compared to curriculum cover. In future, I would use this step more constructively and although effective teaching can be affected by various variables, we should aim to incorporates characteristics of an effective teacher.
All in all, for EMC to survive in a competitive environment the administrative staff at the hospital will need to re-evaluate the services they want to offer and what population demographics it will serve to better their organization.
Medical school and teaching hospital leaders, educators, providers, and researchers operate in an environment that is more chall...
For my career I am going to talk about why being an EMT is a great job to have, and why most people choose to be an EMT. I am also going to give three reasons why I would love to be an EMT. One reason I want to be an EMT is because I like to work with people, but I also like to be in the medical field. The second reason I want to be an EMT is because these type of people can work with anyone with the right personality of course and plus they get to be around people all day and help save lives without; EMTs most people wouldn’t survive long enough to get to the hospital. The third reason I want to be an EMT is because I’ve been fascinated with the medical

It will seek to demonstrate the appropriateness in supporting the patient and their family, whilst reflecting upon personal experience, and how literature may influence the healing effectiveness. The factors that enhance and inhibit the learning environment will be explored and suggested techniques to improve clinical learning will also be discussed. Finally the nurse-patient learning relationship will be explored along with the application of teaching and learning strategies will be examined.
In chapter two of Ryan Cooper’s textbook, Those Who Can, Teach, he lists eight characteristics of an effective school: “[1] high expectations for student performance, [2] communication among teachers, [3] a task orientation among the staff, [4] the ability to keep students on task, [5] the expenditure of little time on behavior management, [6] the principal’s instructional leadership, [7] the participation of parents, and [8] the school environment” (51). While all eight characteristics above greatly contribute to a school’s overall success, some characteristics have a greater ability to affect the success of a given school. Educators Wong and Wong point out that research consistently says effective teachers exhibit three characteristics: 1) they are good classroom managers, 2) they teach for learning and mastery, and 3) they have positive expectations (8-10). Because I believe the foundation of school effectiveness relies on teachers, I consider the characteristics with a focus on effective teacher-to-student interaction most important. Taken from the list above, those characteristics are (1) teachers who exhibit high expectations for student performance, (3) a task orientation among the teaching staff, and (4) the ability to keep students on task.
My journey to higher education spans 24-years and combines two passions, teaching and EMS (emergency medical services). This journey began in 1986 with a suburban kindergarten class of 25 in Memphis, TN. Eleven years later no longer am I teaching school-age children; instead, I am delivering training programs to EMS providers as well as the medical community. Today, I combine both passions to offer students authentic experiences through which to obtain proficient skills in written and oral communications, critical and analytical thinking, problem solving, as well as in negotiation and conflict resolution skills as they prepare for rewarding
The goal of my learning plan for this semester is to develop skills in health education specific to adolescents. I chose this as my learning goal because my placement this semester at Sunnybrook Hospital, Injury Prevention Program, gives me an opportunity to provide health education to high school students every Tuesday at out P.A.R.T.Y. Program so I thought I should use this opportunity to develop my and improve my nursing skills in this area. As well as good health education skills to adolescents can benefit the students by proving them a motivating learning environment and better learning outcomes. I hope they can enjoy my teaching and absorb the information and use them in the future. I have considered many factors in the process of developing my learning plan such as the nursing standards of health promotion, prevention and health protection, professional relationships, capacity building etc… I brainstormed possible topics such as possible topics that are related to injury prevention itself for example, concussion prevention or preventing sports related injuries. I also thought about doing topics that are relevant specifically to the P.A.R.T.Y. Program such as teenage suicide and prevention or distracted driving. After assessing my placement and the clients which in this case are the students, I have recognized that one of the program’s goals is to educate the students about injuries and injury prevention. I also found that our clients had a lot of potential in learning about this subject which can greatly benefit their lives and influence change in their behaviour to increase control of their own health and make better choices. In terms of my personal needs, I felt that I had room for improvement in terms of my le...
Touching lives and affecting the outcome of so many futures a teacher is the epitome of a leader. Just as a leader has his or her own style, a teacher’s way of motivating his/her students, also plays an important role for a students success. Spending more time children then most parents do, a teacher is crucial in shaping with children of the future. If teachers are poor leaders then children suffer. When they shine as leaders, children blossom and the universe is wide open. As a teacher must fine tune their leadership skills and find the best style of teaching for the students who they are teaching. The intrinsic characteristics of a teacher can be categorized into a few main teaching styles or leadership styles. Directing, participating, delegating, and combined styles are the main forms of teaching and leading. The qualities associated with these styles are necessary to any teacher. The purpose ...
Successful teachers develop the whole child by making integrated efforts to promote their student’s academic, social and emotional learning. Children need to be aware of themselves and others; make responsible decisions, and be ethical and respectful of the people around them.
To this matter, the Committee on Accreditation of Educational Programs for the Emergency Medical Services (COAEMSP) mission is to progress the quality of EMS education through CAAHEP accreditation (COAEMSP, 2017). In essence, accreditation is the primary mechanism for verifying educational program quality for the protection of students and the public (Freel, 2000). In healthcare, “the purpose of accreditation is to build a competent health workforce by ensuring the quality of training taking place within those institutions that have met certain criteria” (Cuff & Perez,
Right from the time we embark on our education trip, we come across different types of teachers. Some are friendly, some are strict, and some are the ones we idolize. We also dislike a few, who fail to impress us positively. Students begin to like teachers, according to their own individual preferences. They even classify their teachers into different categories, such as Friendly Teachers, Lenient Teachers, Perfectionist Teachers, Strict Teachers and Funny Teachers. All these classifications for teachers are based on some typical personality traits of the teachers. For ex - some teachers constantly criticize the students, some act like friends, some are fun to be with and so on. Let us explore them in detail.
I started to explore the different fields of medicine by working as a Medical Scribe in the Emergency Department, ER tech in Trauma Centers, getting involved in research, volunteering at hospitals and taking high level science classes. This will enhance my knowledge and experience i...
Overall, I believe that there are many characteristics that I should model if I wish to succeed as an educator. However, I also understand that there are many that I should avoid if I am going to be an effective educator.
The lack of these other important aspects is causing a nationwide epidemic of incomplete medical awareness. However, there is hope. If people realize that other parts of medical awareness are important such as emergency medical preparedness and exposure to medical professions, they can start embracing solutions. For example, for emergency medical preparedness mass CPR and First Aid classes can help save thousands of lives by making people prepared to handle emergency situations. As for the lack of exposure to medical professions, health science programs like HOSA or basic medical introductory programs can help introduce and prepare the next generation to take over the medical world when the time comes.
