Censorship is the practice of concealing parts of a book, movie, show, or any other form of media. Media can be censored in many ways; one of these is to block out the offensive sections of the content. This is generally done when the content of said media is not considered overall offensive or inappropriate but has derogatory and/or blasphemous language. Another way Media can be censored is to have it banned completely. For a book to be banned, it must first be challenged. According the American Library Association, a challenge “is an attempt to remove or restrict materials, based upon the objections of a person or group.” The question over censorship has been debated for years: Should we be allowed to ban Medias we deem unfit and/or inappropriate from our children?
It has been assumed for decades that the media’s effect is most influential on subordinate groups such as children, women, poor minorities, and immigrants (generally the lower class) who are mentally less

capable (Butsch). This argument comes from research that uses more prejudice judgement to support their claim than it does actual proof. Despite this assumption having little supporting evidence, it has become ingrained into our society. The effect “dangerous” media has on children is one main claim that has stayed around for centuries. Children are assumed to be more susceptible to the alleged dangers of the media and because of this, the banning and censoring of books aimed at children has become an issue. There are many reasons why books are challenged and/or banned. A few of the reasons include: racial issues, age inappropriate content, blasphemous language, violence or negativity, religious affiliations, and political bias (Fort Lewis College). As you can see, all of these reasons are a matter of opinion. One person’s idea of age inappropriate content will differ from another’s. Because of this, it is important to form your own opinions of books and whether or not you should allow you children to read it. Making judgement on a book because of how it is labeled could leave you left out of a movement revolutionary to society, as there have been (and currently are) many influential book on the official banned list. Influential books that have been banned/challenged include The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain, Catcher and the Rye by J.D. Salinger, and Uncle Tom’s Cabin by Harriet Beecher Stowe (Banned Books). Stories for children have been under scrutiny since fairytales and folklores were passed down through oral tradition. A main argument used then was that fictional tales encourage to use of imagination instead of leaning facts and morality. In the 17th century, Puritans condemned fictional literature, which was considered from the imagination and not fact (Saltman). In the 18th century, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, in his highly influential book Emile or on Education, argued that children should be given nothing but the unvarnished truth. (Saltman) The imagination vs.
scholarly literature argument is still going on today. For example, the Captain Underpants series by Dav Pilkey has been challenged many times since its first debut in 1997. According to the ALA, this series was banned in some schools due to “insensitivity and being unsuited to age group, as well as encouraging children to disobey authority.” So if the belief that children’s books shouldn’t be for the imagination but for intellect has lasted for centuries, does this mean we should ban children from books that we consider to be for entertainment and not scholarly advancement? Given that fiction is something still being written today, and growing in popularity as shown by the massive fan bases of young adult novels such as the Twilight series by Stephanie Meyers or the Harry Potter series by JK Rowling, I don’t believe the banning of imaginative literature is going to happen anytime soon. But should it? The question is something school authorities still struggle
with.
One of the main themes of the novel Fahrenheit 451 is censorship. Censorship is n: the action of a censor esp. in stopping the transmission or publication of matter considered objectionable. That is, of course, according to the guys over at Merriam-Webster.
Censorship, as defined in the dictionary, is, in the case of a book, to take out things thought to be objectionable. Censorship is far more than that. This mere word prohibits us from all things
The children are the real losers because they are the ones that are not able to read the classic works of literature, which are the backbone of classroom discussions all across the United States. The American Association of School Administrators (AASA) defines censorship as: “The removal, suppression, or restricted circulation of literary, artistic, or educational materials. of images, ideas, and information.on the grounds that these are morally or otherwise objectionable in light of standards applied by the censor” (Miner 1998). In schools there are three types of censorship, one type is a “parent” who doesn’t want their child to read a particular book. Another is a parent, teacher, administrator, or school board member who argues that no one in the class, or school, should read the book in dispute.
Censorship is a concept with several different meanings. To each individual censorship has its own meaning. Is it a violation of our rights or is it a protection for our well being? Censorship in the generic sense refers to the suppression of information, ideas, or opinions. It occurs in all forms of communication from technological media to print media. Each society, culture, or individual's belief is violated by the codes of censorship that our society instills.
What is censorship? An encyclopedia defines censorship as "the control of what people may say or hear, write or read, or see or do1." There are many reasons why people censor entertainment such as literature and music. Many governments or groups try to preserve their standards of morality by preventing people from learning about or following other standards2, commonly found in the two previously mentioned mediums. There are different ways to censor things. It can be on a local level, such as libraries refusing to carry a controversial book. It can also be on an entirely larger scale. In the 1770’s, French author Beaumarchais had two of his plays, The Barber of Seville and The Marriage of Figaro, banned by King Louis XVI.2 Back then, these plays were considered outrageous and sometimes blasphemous. To fully understand how our system of censorship works today, we have to look into history to see how censorship got started.
Censorship has been a big part of the world’s history and especially America’s history. One of the most quoted amendments to the United States constitution is the first amendment; “Congress shall make no law…abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press ...” This amendment guaranteeing free speech, press, and religion is still heavily debated and contested today. Censorship, as a challenge to free speech and press has been allowed many times and has been heavily debated itself. Many people censor for many different reasons and in many different forms. Censorship itself is not always a bad thing and has in some cases been used for protection of the general population.
A point often overlooked, Media affects the poor and the rich also they are the most criticized. According to Thomas C. Corley "Exposure to an Ideology that abuse individual responsibility and for some reason this file is wealth". Basically the rich are criticized for the way they became or got there and the poor are also from the way they hit rock bottom. Some are just born into their
Currently there is a long-standing debate dealing with the effects of media. Some believe that the media is just something to indulge or watch and that it has no significant affect on people while others say that has a powerful pull on society as a whole. Research indicates that bias in media articles leads to minorities and women being portrayed in a stereotypical or harsh manner (Hazell and Clarke 3). This leads to African Americans being seen as individuals fit for “lower status occupations,” (Hazel and Clark 7). Black men were also seen as hostile, intimidating figures mainly working as athletes or musicians while women were portrayed as domineering, overly expressive people (Hazel and Clark 9).
The subject of censorship is a very controversial one, especially the banning of books. Many people believe they must protect themselves and others from the "evils" of many classic books and works of art because they can be deemed "indecent" in one way or another. Many believe that this is absurd and censorship in its current form is a violation of our First Amendment right to free speech. Personally, I align myself with the latter, however I do feel there are occasions where censorship is justifiable.
The most debatable and controversial form of censorship today is the banning of books in school libraries. Banning books that educate students is wrong and selfish. Censorship of books in school libraries is neither uncommon nor an issue of the past. Books with artistic and cultural worth are still challenged constantly by those who want to control what others read. The roots of bigotry and illiteracy that fuel efforts to censor books and free expression are unacceptable and unconditional. Censoring school books in libraries can often lead to censorship of our basic freedoms guaranteed in the First Amendment. In some cases, a minority ends up dictating the majority in censorship cases. To be told what is permissible reading material and what is not is a direct violation of the First Amendment of the Constitution.
Many people believe the most precious constitutional right is the first amendment. People may censor due to content that is considered to be too violent, or obscene, or even the language may be too vulgar. There are many reasons given for censorship in a classroom or library, a book or other learning resource may be restricted or banned because it includes social, political, or religious views believed to be “inappropriate or “threatening.” In the classroom or in the schools, the teachers or the administrators are the determining factor on what’s appropriate. In a community there are other certain people that look over textbooks, movies, and other published sources. On a federal or higher level sometimes it’s the legislators. The basic right to freedom of expression in the United States is protected by the First Amendment to the constitution. In 1791, the bill of rights was the base of basic rights for citizens 4 years after signing of the constitution. There was controversy over to include the Bill of Rights when the United States was founded. One of the rights the Bill of Rights protects is freedom of spee...
In some cases, censorship can be avoided depending on how courts interpret the First Amendment. Books and music are censored to help to keep people from taking offense in things they hear or read (Taylor 7). Just like when parents take away that favorite M-rated video game or turn off that R-rated movie, usually adults mean the best when they censor. They just want to protect their children. But, censorship does not end at the home. Some learning resources may be censored because they go against a certain religion, belief, or view (Taylor 8). This happ...
Hence, censorship is essential in society to eliminate discrimination on basis of race and gender, protect children, maintain stability and restore what censor sees as lost moral values. Censorship occurs when expressive materials like books, magazines, movies, videos, music or works of art are restricted to particular audiences based on their age or other characteristics. http://www.ala.org/oif/intellectualfreedeomandcensorship.html) Censorship is not a recent development. It wasn’t imposed properly or there weren’t strict regulations before.
Is censorship the answer to the issues of hate propaganda within society? Do we shield our children’s eye to the harsh realities in life, and let them discover the shocking truths on their own? It can be nice to pretend that this is a world devoid of hate and perversions, but this is not reality. People have a right to be aware of the multifaceted society in which they are a part of if they choose to. Garry Wills presents the concept of censorship “In Praise of Censure” published in 1989, by Times Magazine. He believes that censor may not be an issue that is subject to government enforcement, but it is up to society to enforce censorship. Although Will has stated his support for the first amendment, the freedom of speech, he also agrees with censorship within boundaries. It is an attack on the intelligence of society to censor expressions therefore limiting the choice for an individual to create their own personal boundaries. The bulk of society is capable of developing their own ideas and critical thoughts about the
Censorship has been around since B.C. times and originated in Rome. Censorship was enforced to protect our society by not allowing explicit content to be viewed in the media. It also protects child pornography and secret government information leaks. The problem is, in some cases, it is hard to determine what should be censored because even though something might be explicit content, it portrays the point the publisher is trying to make. On the flip, some people believe that these extreme crime scenes seen in the media have caused people to commit these crimes in real life.
